feel like a slave to the scale

everyday I jump on this thing. I wait for the number. once I have it I am always disappointed. After, my mind begins to wonder and I begin to feel bad. food use to be my go to, what do I go you now?

I still weigh myself at least twice a day, out of habit.....first thing when I wake up, then later at the gym after a good run and workout.....

The ups and downs are common, expected and even predictable...swings within the same 5 lbs....if I'm up 3 lbs today, I'll be 4 lbs tomorrow, then up 2 the following, etc, etc...

No offense Tezzie, but I see so many posts like yours and I just don't get it? You've lost 49 lbs and you've only had the band 7 weeks? Do you have any idea how many people would love to have half your success. I wouldn't consider 49 lbs as a disappointment? Sorry, don't mean to be mean, rude or judgemental, but you got it good gal.

Your mind is playing with you. Telling you to be disappointed for no reason just so you can eat bad food. Bad mind, bad bad.

why feel bad? why disappointed?

if your losing *inches*, does it really matter what the scale says? esp since it varies so much during the day....because if you are buying smaller clothes or have better mobility, then in my eyes you are losing and should be saying YOU GO GIRL when looking in mirror.

and if you need something to go to when you feel bad, take a walk, read a book, take a hot bath, jump on this forum and encourage someone...lots of options..

I also weigh myself twice a day... first thing in the morning, and when I hit the sack. There are days when my weight goes up a few pounds; but sooner or later it drops off and I hit a new low. My food logging programming provides graphs, and the graphs show that any short term plateaus or gains are mere blips when viewed on a graph that spans several months.

I'd suggest not weighing yourself so often. I've quite a few posts from folks who get depressed from weighing themselves too often. My APRN told me so long as as his patients were losing, even a pound a month, he was satisfied. Realistically, if you can lose 8 pounds a month you are doing extremely well; especially after being out surgery for a few months when the rapid weight loss period slows.

I broke up with my scale because I was letting the number dictate how I felt. My weight really hasn't changed too much in the last few months, but I have gone done almost 4 sizes and feel so much more energized. That's what I'm focusing on, not the number on a scale. I do weigh in once a month, just to keep track.

Put the scale away for a while if it's making you discouraged. Try to focus on those non scale victories!! I weigh myself everyday, but for me I just use it to keep myself accountable. I can go days and days and days without a loss. I actually have a pair of jeans that I purposely bought a few sizes too small. I try them on once a week and each week I get closer and closer to wearing them! It's pretty amazing how the body changes! You've come so far already...keep up the great work!

You definitely should step away from the scale (literally) and maybe focus more on measurements. I weigh weekly but only log a monthly weight and also measurements at that time. I may not lose pounds but still lose inches as the fat changes to muscle. Women's weight especially fluctuates since we tend to retain Water more than men do, so that number on the scale may not be a good indicator of where you are. Congrats on the great success so far!

My support group leader goes on and on about being accountable. She considers accountability being done by weigh ins being done often. Hints why my Title is slave to the scale. I see the changes and feel great. I dont have temptation to eat like I use to....My issue is I get on and see that number and wonder if I am being accountable enough. Then I start feeling bad. Yes 49lbs is a large amount of weight and I am proud of myself. I love giving away my larger clothes but in the back of my mind its always am I really being accountable, could I be doing more. I just need to get rid of my scale and let my weigh-ins at the doctor be enough. Thanks eveyone!!!!

I believe you and your support group leader are suffering from bad vocabulary. What they're calling Accountability sounds more like Consistency but you seem to be defining it as Responsibilty which you're then processing as Guilt.

Whether or not you need to weigh yourself daily will depend on how much your brain relies on feedback to maintain motivation for behavioral changes. How it makes you "feel" is a secondary effect influenced by your own emotional outlook.

I really feel the key to long term success is to focus on changing your habits daily (or even hourly) but gauge your success/progress with a broader view.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
