Banded as of Dec.22. I've been lucky thus far with minimal pain. My question is about the liquid diet . For the 1st week should it be strictly clear liquid diet? Or can I incorporate cream Soups like cream of mushroom or cream of chicken. I've read other people including these 3 days post op but I was advised not to till about 2 weeks out. I can't stand the chicken broth or Liquid Protein I've been drinking since surgery.

It would be wise to follow your Drs orders. As you've noticed all Drs are different and your Dr believes in the plan they gave you. Right now, you , surgeon and staff are a team, that works together for whats best for you.

Try not to compare yourself to others, we're all on the same journey, but all very different from each other.

Call your Dr and ask them about what you can do to get through this stage.

Best of Luck!

I was banded the 21st. Each doctor has different instructions. Mine included 2 weeks liquid, clear first day then anything you can get through a straw (consistency wise). Then progress to mushies on week 3. My diet has mainly consisted of sf Popsicles, Protein Drinks (isopure 50 gram/ serving), broth, Water, Jello. I thinned out some pea Soup and cream of wheat earlier today which helped break up the monotony.

Let me give you an idea of what can happen when you try to jump the gun thinking you know your body! Please do not skip the first 7 days clear liquids, following 2 weeks full liquids and then 1 week mushies. I am 14 days post op and I had mostly lost all the bloating and gas. Yesterday I thought I could skip to mushies and I had 2 oz. white rice with stewed chicken sauce for lunch and dinner. I chewed until liquifying and thought I'd be ok. Last night my upper abdomen swelled up like I was 5 mos. pregnant with gas. It's now 5 am and I have slept one hr. I threw my body back one week! Cannot pass gas, and I am in a lot of pain! Please don't trust your instincts as I did. I thought I was going to die last night!

I'm so glad you posted this!! Im 9 days post op and my doc put me directly on mushies but I can't handle it! It's too much!! I feel bloated and gassy all the time. If I have Protein Shakes and crystal light or Water I'm ok. But once I have anything remotely thicker than that I've got bloating and gas and a pain under my left rib cage that doesn't go away without pain meds... The roxicet, not Tylenol.

I am glad I could help! This was a horrible experience for me. Today I am back on liquids and I feel much better! Have you tried the Miralax powder packets? Helps soften stools and helps get rid of excess gas!

I was 48 hours after discharge ( and I slept overnight so really almost 4 days) clear liquids only and by the last 12 hours I was getting hungry. I thought the clear liquids only was so hard.

Then a 2 week liquid diet. Which includes up to 4 Protein shakes a day, pureed Soups or soups that start off smooth, and no sugar added yogurt, sf non fat pudding and sf popsicles. Plus increase clear liquids to 64 oz a day.

That will take me to 18 days post op. Then I see my surgeon and he will give me the ok for mushies.

Every dr is so different.

But in all the packets I received, it says this is a healing process do not rush it.

I was told clear liquids the first 24 hours, and after that anything you can get through a straw. I was put on mushies after a week of liquids, however, I feel like i am better off with mostly liquid and some added mush. Like, I added some crackers to my Tomato Soup, that kind of thing.

I was also told that rice, especially white rice, is an absolute NO NO NO with a band - it swells as it retains Water, and will absolutely puff you up and make you feel miserable. So it might have been that you chose the wrong mushies. No rice! :)

I was told the same thing.

I was put on a liquid diet as part of my pre-op protocol.

The day before and the day of surgery I was on clear … so that would be about 48 hours.

Liquid diet for first 2 week of post-op … this includes anything that can fit through a straw but is not carbonated.

On Monday I will have my 2 week post-op visit and hope for the green light to start mushies!

I, too, was told that Pasta and rice are not included with this stage and to stick to things like cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, mashed turnips/potatoes/carrots, pudding, refried Beans with melted cheese, guacamole, etc...

This mushie stage will last from week 3 - 5 … as of week 6 I can add more in.

It's a lot to remember and adjust to so I made myself a cool menu map that plots out each week and phase. I gave a copy to my family, hung one on the fridge at home, and put another copy in my work bag. :D

It's funny how different the diets are totally different. My nutritionist specifically told me to try to avoid carbs. No potato Soup during creamy soup phase. No mashed potatoes or grits during mushies. Even after I am eating regular food- try to avoid carbs! Lol. I thought for sure I could have both of those things.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
