When Will I Notice Something? When Did You, And What Was It?

Recommended Posts

I had my lap band surgery Oct 31st, 12 days ago, and am SO happy that I made the decision to have it done. However, I feel that this is probably the hardest time to go through. I wonder how long it will be until I notice something, any little thing, like a nsv. Cause I went through the surgery, am doing the liquid, puree, and soon mushies phase, but there's no reward yet, understandably. I'd love to wake up feeling a little lighter, like maybe after being sick for a few days and the tummy feels not so full. Or having my pants feel just a teeny bit

looser. I've probably lost about 8-9 lbs, and am happy if that's so. (so far, I don't plan on weighing myself, will let the doctor do that) I'm just wondering; does it take long to have that first YES! moment? I know once I get there, I'll be patient with the rest of my weight loss, because I know I'll feel better as the scale is going down. So what I want to know is, did it take long to get that feeling???

Well, your first nsv is that you got the band!

My stomach was swollen for a few weeks. I measured the other day and found I had lost 3 inches off my waist. Same thing will probably happen to you. Be patient. You are still healing.

I have lost 11 lbs since surgery I a think I am doing great :)

I think that is different for everyone, "the yes moment" I knew I was steadily losing but I was about a year and a half out before I really stopped seeing myself as a fat girl. I knew I was smaller but I still felt fat, mine was not a number thing but a mental picture I had of me.

Good question. I had a lot to lose and I recall my clothes were all elastic waists so I didn't get a hint from them.... It was about 40 lbs down when someone I hadnt seen in months asked me if I was losing weight... I think that was the first NSV. The second one was down 90 lbs and I flew for the first time being banded.... And I didn't need a seat belt extender. That was a great day.

My nsv happened 2 days ago when I could fit a shirt I had bought my daughter from Chico's last Christmas. That was exciting for me.

I was banded on Thurs of last week, 6 days ago. I weighed...against the rules, but I was curious. I have lost 15 pds. I am really swollen though, and my stomach is very tender. So, I am not having the wow or yes factor at all right now. I can't wait to reach that point though. I imagine it to be at least 6 months down the road.

a great for me moment was realizing i took a huge step in (saving my life). yes i am being dramatic but i am also being honest. my yes moment came when i was able to walk (better/more) than i had been able to in years a couple weeks after surgery. i have never looked back.

I've lost 10 lbs in the past 2 weeks and about 30 total. I still dont notice and weight loss or clothes looser. No one has commented that I look like I've lost weight :( I do feel better and have more energy. Hang in there...

I can't put my finger on a yes moment.....but what I can say is wow I've come a long way in 9 months! It feels like I was banded yesterday and here I am just 20 lbs to goal. It will go fast and before you know it you will have a list of yes moments!

Good luck on your journey.

I was banded on 10-22. Lost 3 whopping lbs before surgery...lost 11 lbs the first week and then finally found the right batteries for my scale at home and weighed myself...only 3 lbs in the last 2 weeks and 2 days.....was very disheartened when I seen that. I track food, have been staying under 900 calories a day, have not cheated once and 3 lbs??

I just feel..."how is it possible NOT to lose weight eating than amount compared to what I ate previously"???? And the biggest thing is...I am starving most of the day :(

Cant wait to get a fill, I feel any amt has to help some with the hunger...dont know if I will be able to keep it up if I have to do it on my own for 5 months or so for restriction??? I will try but holy moly it is hard every hour of every day.

Dont bash me please :) so many of you are inspiritational for me and I read on here often...I am happy it is something but was hoping for more this first month as after that things are likely to slow

No bashing, PJ. Big hugs!! You are in the all too unpopular bandster hell. Hang in there! I know it is frustrating but you can do it. Believe in yourself, as I believe in you.

I suggest you try increasing your calories, I eat 1200 per day.... Plus try increasing your Protein, try to stay away from shakes eat your protein....Chewing makes you feel better mentally.

Good luck to you, you'll get thru this stage.

No one should ever bash you. We have all felt that way and there are times when I cannot feel if I am hungry or not. When I look at some of the weight losses that people have experienced I wonder if I will make it.

You'll make it. It is a long journey, a change for life and you can do it! You will do it at your pace, try not to compare yourself to others.

We support you every step of the way.

I can sense your excitement, mine has been a very slow process with many setbacks, but I remember this first thing I noticed was my clavicle/collar bones, all day I would reach up and feel such an unfamiliar part of my body and then my shin bones when I was shaving, then crossing my legs became comfortable and not something I would have to use force to get done and a table propped against the leg to hold it in place, and then my HIP bones, even now before falling asleep I run my hand cross it thinking WOW, but when I put my bathing suit on this past summer from the previous one it, just hung on me I seriously had to sit down for that one, and just last week I noticed my weight is lower than what my driver’s license states…the whole saying about how nothing changes day to day but when you look back everything is different, I can really relate to, it is such a slow process that I feel that I am never going to lose this weight and then I look back and go WOW! Btw I lost 40lb before anyone noticed and now at almost 50 I get compliments at least once a week : )

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
