Found A Way To Eat Around The Band

Recommended Posts

My last fill was on April 17th and I believe I am in the green zone now. Yea! But, I found that I can eat around the band by eating chips and salsa. Not happy. Now that I know I can eat any amount of chips, I have cut myself off. I have little will power when I am hungry.

chips seems to be an item most banded people can eat. I can eat them but usually only about 5 or 6. I don't buy big bags of chips because I know I can eat them. If I buy some I will buy small bags or a pringles can.

It's all about planning. Keep a supply of low fat cheese sticks at home and bring them with you if you know you will be hungry before your next meals. Lack of planning will be your biggest down fall. It would be better for you to eat 2 cheess sticks at 70 cals each (140 cals )than even one serving of chips also 140 cals.

chips are also a slider so you are unlikely to get a full feeling no matter how many you eat.

Thanks for the reply. That helps alot. What other foods are sliders?

Any food that disolves in your mouth, or can be chewed to thin mush is a slider: ice cream, candy, cake, crackers, chips, high calorie drinks, Protein Shakes. Your pouch is just a funnel. Anything that would pass through a funnel will not give you a full feeling.

Fill level has nothing to do with sliders for me. I have to be almost occluded to not be able to eat slider foods, and that is just not a happy place for me. chips, Cookies, ice cream..they all go down quite easily for me.

The only time they didn't is when I was overfilled and could not even get yogurt or mashed potatoes with lots of milk in them down. Even now, while I am in the green zone but considering a slight unfil, I can eat silders with no problem. It is the good for me foods that are a challenge. I have to choose not to eat the sliders. It is way easier to grab some chips than to sit and slowly eat a salad that may or may not go down. And the chips taste soooo much better.

It's a shame they cannot band the brain along with the stomach.

I am trying to figgure out why anyone would go and have the lapband put in and want to "eat around the band", "& cheat" . Was it so easy to pay for the surgery? Was it so easy to go under with anesthesia?

Was it easy to walk and get those darn gas bubbles out? Was it easy to do a 2-3 week liquid only diet?

Was it easy having the pain pills cause Constipation? Is life better living in obesity city? For me I am going to say NO to all these questions. And then I ask this: Why do you want to sabatauge your weight loss for some crappy food that got you obese in the first place? Thank you.

Cindysmom, if it made any sense at all, few of us would have problems in the first place. ;)

It's a shame they cannot band the brain along with the stomach.

And therein lies the answer to your essential question.

Congratulations on your great accomplishment, by the way. One pound to go! WOW.

I only feel this way because at 64 years old, I don't have 40-50 years to live. I just recently lost my brother from Diabetes. If I did not do the lapband my kids would have no mother. I must be strong to survive heart trouble, diabetes, and plain old obesity. I know that I's kind of anal. But its the only way for me to be. Size medium sure beats size 2x. I want so much for myself and all you others. Did you see my before photo? I had to look that way in front of my exhusband and his wife. {Thin and Blonde} I got fired from my job of 9 years from a new supervisor cause I was so FAT..

Seriously!!! EVERYONE eats foods that aren't the best nutritious choice. No one stays away from all junk food and if it were that easy then we wouldn't be in the position of having a lapband. Maybe your doctor is different then mine but mine actually says eat what we want but no more then 1/2 cup. We have no foods that are off limits but we all know eating a salad would be a better choice then some chips. I chose to live realistically and know that I am going to eat some foods that aren't the most nutritious but I am not going to gorge on them or let it get to me. I will admit that I eat chips/salsa when i go out to eat with friends, I have had an ice cream cone when I take my kids out, and I had a cookie the other night at my sons awards program (he is special needs and they made the Cookies for their parents) but the difference is I have ONE and I don't dwell on it. I account for the calories and it doesn't become a habit.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
