Preparing For Lower Body Lift With Anchor Incision

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've lost 213 pounds so far on the lap band. Started at 433 in Sept of 2008, lost most of this weight in the first 2 years. After a long plateau and a port replacement due to a leak, I'm back on track and losing again. I'm determined to get from my current weight of 220 to my goal of 180 (I'm 5' 9"). My reward to myself will be a lower body left with anchor incision.

I had a panniculectomy after losing 80 pounds because my pannus was so bad. That was great but I definitely need the lower body lift. All my loose skin has pooled around my hips and I have folds vertically as well as horizontally (hence the anchor incision). I'm two sizes larger on bottom than on top!

I'm looking for any advice and encouragement I can get as I push the last mile on my weight loss and decide where to get the surgery done. My insurance covered the panni but definitely won't cover this. I've consulted with the surgeon who did my panni but it would cost me approx $16k here in the San Francisco bay area. I'm considering going out of the country to get this done but wary because I know it is a complex surgery. Not your average Tummy Tuck.

Any insight or advice would be appreciated!

Kathy

Thanks for the reply, danielle b! Can you tell me, did you investigate a lot of other plastic surgeons before selecting Dr. Quiroz?

I did a lot of research. And I know that there are bad and good reviews on just about any doctor. I have some Facebook friends that have used Dr Quiroz. And I feel very confident with my choice. My surgery is June 21, as I am also having inner thigh lift and liposuction along with LBL. I will be staying in their recovery boutique for 15 days, with full time 24 hour nurse, and meals included.

Wow! Does that price of $4000 include the 15 days in the recovery boutique?

Can't wait to hear how your surgery goes!

Does not include recovery boutique...If you stay there over 10 days, it is $100/day. There were a couple other charges too...not too much though. I will keep you posted for sure :)

I haven't gotten to the point that I'm close enough to my goal to look into any reconstructive surgeries yet but about a year ago when I was in the waiting room for a fill, I started talking to another patient. She said that she did the bypass a couple of years ago, had reconstructive work done, then did the band. She advised me that all of her surgeries were covered by insurance because she was an organ donor and she donated the extra skin that was removed. Like I said, I haven't looked into this myself yet with my insurance company but it's definitely something that I'm keeping in mind! Good luck :)

Hi, I am in NC and have a lower body lift in Nov, my biggest concern about having the surgery done out of the country is after care! I had a lower body lift and some chest work done. Had 6 Drains, I really had no problems but still I was at the PS at least once a week for at least 6 weeks, even after my final drain came out I had some Fluid build up etc.

So unless your PS in Mexico has some agreement with a Dr in your area for after care I would not want to go out of the country. Additionally about 3 months, the PS Did a small revision, due to the swelling my skin stretched a bit above my pubic area so he tighten that up too. All of the follow up was part of the surgery cost. The only cost of the revision was $200 for the surgical tray. I would since Nov I must have see the Dr at least 20 Times from Nov to April. So due keep this in mind. My surgery was $12K thins are a bit less costly in NC. Good luck to you.

This is a major surgery so follow up is really important.

Thanks for information. I have already talked to my primary care physician and he is completely backing me up on my decision. They have informed me that whatever I need when I get back that they are there to help me.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
