Protein Shakes - Where Can I Find Good Ones?

Hello to my fellow Springers. I have been scheduled for an April 2nd surgery date and just trying to wrap my head around everything. Right now, the only thing I have to do is schedule a PreTest (Blood work) and a PreOp Appointment; not sure why a Pschy Eval. nor Nutritionist visit isn't required. However, I am going to schedule a nutritionist visit on my own before the surgery. My bariatric coordinator has been really helpful and even tell me about the PreOp Diet that I will have to do two weeks before the surgery. She even informed me that I will have to get in between 40 and 60 grams of Protein in within that first six weeks. Therefore, I was wondering if you can tell me where I can get great Protein Shakes because this will be new to me and I will need the support.

Yes, your Protein is a BIG deal and you want to find something that tastes good and has the highest protein grams and low sugar. Im in the middle of researching this, so I will share this recent post that I saved from Sophia which should be helpful. I will post some more info in another post later.

I am Sophia and I have just recently started my band journey. I was banded on Feb 24th 2012!! I am happy to say I am doing very well, and I am headed back to work after a week of being off.

One thing I have noticed in a lot of the forums is that people are having a hard time getting the amount of protein required and recommended by their doctor. I have been very blessed, following in a couple different peoples foot steps, so I have a heads up on variety, this way we don't get board, get as much protein as you possibly can in one drink, and did I mention variety. I don't know about you but I can only stand so much chocolate, vanilla, and strawberrie mixes.... also the thickness of some of those protein drinks...can we say gag..lol

I am going to start a list of the ones I have started using, along with a web sight so you can see what they look like, these should be able to be purchased at a local Vitamin shop near you.

1. my number one favorite so far: New Whey Liquid Protein

0g fat, 0g sugar, 180 cal, 42g PROTEIN, 100mg sodium, 50mg potassium. and best part only 3-3.8oz The come in several different flavors ie grape, fruit punch, apple, acai berry, watermelon and so on.

web page: www.newwhey.com

2.Protein Blitz

These tast kina link fruit punch and look like a Gatorade bottle

web page: http://www.proteinblitz.com/

3. Cytomax Protein

0g fat, 0g sugar, 160 cal, 40g PROTEIN, 85mg sodium, 180mg potassium, 0 carb,

This one also is sold in a Gatorade bottle to try or I just found out you can buy in a powder as well.

web site: http://cytomax.com/

4. nectar made by Syntrax,

0g fat, 0g sugar, 100 cal, 24g PROTEIN, 60 mg sodium, 160mg potassium, 0g carb

These taste like different flavors of kool-aid. yum yum....

web site: Main site: http://www.si03.com/

Location of product: http://www.si03.com/reg_index.htmhttp://www.si03.com/reg_index.htm, if you call the number on this page they will send you samples of each flavor for 13.00 for 13 flavors....some are to die for...I havent done it yet but some of their flavors you can mix and come up with other flavors.

My goal here is to give you some knowledge on what delicious Protein Drinks are out there and to help you decide where to go next on your protein journey. Please feel free to add different recipes below that you may love...ie, my nurse love to mix the protein blitz with a scoop of her Protein Powder (orange flavored) so she has a 50g or higher protein drink! mmmmm

Two Protein drinks I enjoy right niw are:

1. Isopure- i drink this after a weight training workout and plan to continue as a clear protein the week following surgery. It has 40 grams protein/ no carbs. Lots of flavors and I love it poured over ice. I get the liquid form but it also comes in powder.

2. Muscle Milk - cheaper to get on Amazon.com. But you can find it pretty much anywhere. Again, I get the liquid 4 pak cartons but it also comes in powder. Right now I have one at 10 am to hold me over to lunch. I blend it with half banana and crushed ice and it tastes just like a malt!!! love it!

I am able to get shakes and bars from my clinic. From the research I've done online it looks like they may be the same ones Medifast uses but packaged w/my clinics logo. They are cheaper at my clinic than online from Medifast but the variety is limited to vanilla, chocolate and my favorite strawberry.< /p>

I have also found some reasonably priced shakes and mixes at costco. I have tried the vanilla Premier, not bad but very sweet and a chocolate whey Protein, I don't remember the brand. I have also tried chocolate Muscle Milk Lite, not bad but pricey.

I've been drinking chocolate Premier Nutrition High Protein Chocolate shakes that I buy at costco. Each serving has 30 grams of protein and 160 calories. I wouldn't say the shakes are delicious, but they are okay.

The dietitian gave me the following guidelines for liquid protein supplements:

  • At least 15 grams of protein per 8-ounce serving
  • Less than 20 grams of Total Carbohydrate per 8-ounce serving
  • Less than 5 grams of fat per 8-ounce serving

She also said do not choose Carnation Instant Breakfast (regular), Ensure, Slim-Fast or Boost because they are too high in carbohydrates.

She recommended 60 grams of protein per day for me.

Thank you all so much for this information. I am waiting for the dietician to call me back so I can set up an appointment before the surgery. My entire life right now is making sure that I get everything right because I only have three weeks before my life changes.

How sweet! You are so welcome! What I know comes from following this site and researching the heck out of WLS. I've also been attending a support group for 12 months and have learned soooo much from that group.

Im getting more and more nervous every day!

I was excited to discover Premier Vanilla shakes at costco Saturday. The box was imprinted with the words "new and improved," which made me a little wary, so I only bought one box of vanilla and three chocolate. In most products, I typically enjoy vanilla flavor as much as chocolate, but in my opinion, the Premier chocolate shakes are much better than the vanilla. I am going to add a bit of instant sugar free pudding to see if that helps improve the flavor.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
