First fill and off limit foods there after. HELP

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be getting my first fill soon and I'm a little afraid. I was telling the PA that I have not had any problems with food going down and have been able to eat bread and rice. She told me after the fill that that won't even be a possibility! Why? If you chew well what's the big deal??! Also I told her my appetite is substantially lower than before surg and I am losing small amounts of weight now. So if my meals are already tiny NOW pre fill, what in the world ate they going to be like post fill?? I would like to eat more than a piece of cheese! Lol. why after a small first fill will things drastically be changed and have to be taken out of my diet? Isn't everyone different in what they can and can't eat?! Any help, opinion, advice please

It sounds like you don't need a fill if you can only tolerate small amounts.

I agree. I don't think you should get a fill in my opinion because I've had 3 and can eat quite a bit if I wanted. I stop myself. For me and many others, breads and rice get stuck. Getting stuck is not fun at all.

everyone is different. i can eat rice, popcorn and corn with no issues. i also can eat whole wheat bread. i do know people who can't eat rice or corn or popcorn. i know i can eat more, i choose not too. i stop myself and am losing at a slower pace, but it is better it comes off slower. 1 to 2 lbs per week is what my doctor calls the sweet spot for restriction.

@ sandra s & autumn81 it's not that I can only tolerate small amounts of foods, I just do it. I stop eating before being completely full I think. I just don't want to mess anything up so I stop when I don't have the sensation to continue to eat. I feel satisfied I think before I actually feel full. I'm not even sure if I have been full so far! Still learning my body signals. How does full feel? How do you know if you have eaten too much? That's what I don't want to do.@ screeden it's good to know u can tolerate those things.I am not a big bread eater but I do like the occasional sandwich/burger. I have actually eaten a chicken sandwich but did not finish the whole thing.

Pink, I have had maybe 5 fills (5.5cc); didn't really keep track. I can eat most everything, I now have the most restriction after the last fill about 4 weeks ago. popcorn, pancakes, chicken, beef & rice no problems. I however can't eat "reheated chinese". I had some sweet sour left over and one bite major action. I was in pain for almost an hour. I also can eat something for lunch that I can't eat for dinner or eat it fine on Tues. but Sat no go. It is not only different for everyone, but for me different meal to meal

Niterun thanks for that info. Guess it's just going to take time and patience to know and understand everything. I'm sure I'll learn very quickly about what to eat or not to eat when I have that first bad episode. Hopefully I can continue on to eat what I want just in moderation of course. I don't like the fact that many say there are some "no no" foods cause it just makes you want it more. Lol

I think this was one of the first things I noticed after my surgery that I completely lost the feeling of full. When you are first banded you will not have restriction but you will also not have the feeling of full. I speak at seminars and talk about how the band isn't there to slap you on the wrist it is there to teach you to stop eating when you are satisfied and not "full." Now i do have one question...you are eating small meals but how many times are you eating per day? According to my doctor with the band at a right restriction you should only be eating 3 small meals a day and one 100 calorie snack. The meals shouldn't be larger than a lean cuisine (what my nutritionist says).

As far as bread goes I could eat bread up until my last fill than I began not being able to tolerate it. I could probably physically eat bread very tiny tiny bites very slowly but just because I can doesn't mean I should and considering how narly the PB and sliming feelings are I really avoid them all together. I can no longer do sandwiches or wraps because the carbs ball up before the band. Rice expands so its a definite no no I can do brown rice though.

Kboo I am eating 3 small meals a day minus the snack most days. Some days I do have a snack such as 100 cal snack or yogurt. I really have not had the feeling of being full at all. I stop eating when I feel satisfied. My dr said I am learning very quickly and it takes most longer. I guess I'm happy about that! As I said, I am able to eat everything so far and I thunk it's because I chew chew chew!! I do not want to get stuck! I'm sure it's a learning process that I will get down and I know we all have our own journeys with the band. Thanks for your info

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
