I had Surgery May 11,2011 and wanted to get in touch with others to see how everyone is doing and feeling. I feel like I have made it past the hump of pain from surgery but now am in the I have no restriction and am trying to watch what I eat. How are others doing?

I had surgery May 11th as well. I got over the pain fairly quickly -- I'd say within about 10 days I felt I was pretty much back to normal activity. I'm still eating pureed food as per my doc's policy; I can start soft foods this Tuesday. YAY! As far as restriction goes, my appetite is still definitely depressed, as is my capacity to eat. Even with mushies and slider foods I'm eating way less than I would have on a normal day before surgery. Half a cup or so of whatever and I'm ready to stop eating. (Considering how much I used to be able to pack in that's a miracle!) I'm not scheduled for my first fill until June 28, so I do wonder how things will play out until then.

Good luck!

I was banded on the 18th and just started getting the hunger pangs more frequently. On soft foods, but definitely ready for some "real" food!! The pain comes and go, not so much now just a pang every now and then. I'm still not quite 100% but getting closer every day. Not sure when my first fill will be I go for my 2 week post op on Tuesday.

Good luck everyone!!

I had surgery May 18 and was lucky to be able to move to mushies a week earlier than expected. The dietician at my surgeon's office defined "mushies" as anything that I can cut easily with a spoon. I am doing pretty well. I do get a bit hungry, but am keep my portions to around 1/2 cup and chew, chew, chewing. My first fill isn't until 6 weeks post op. A bit nervous about the "bandster hell" that I've read about. Hope that if it does strike that I can white knuckle it until I get some restruction.

Sorry, that would be restriction, not restruction :)

I just had surgery yesterday and definitely feel better today than I did yesterday. LOL. I hate being sedentary. I am walking once an hour but dang!! I will be happy for the day I can stand up off the couch without having to hold my pillow against my stomach.

My surgery was May 26th. I am getting ready to go to Sam's now...lol...not sure if I will try walking or take the riding cart. Still get tired pretty easy. Don't have to use a pillow or anything to get up...but I had two c-sections and a hysterectomy in my past and this is a breeze in comparison. I am scheduled for my post op with my surgeon on the 2nd and then for a fill on the 23rd. Not really hungry at this point.

Good luck to all!

I had Surgery Thursday May 26th. I don't have an appetite but I am very thirsty all the time. I've been drinking the Clear Liquids and walking every hour. This morning the gas pain was very bad but this afternoon - it's much better. My shoulders still hurt ( gas) but I seem to be much more energetic. I even cooked supper for my son- and I rarely cook but it helped me move around. I am amazed I was able to not even try one bite , Congrats to all May Bandsters - I look forward to years of being thin!

I was able to go to mushies (eggs and Tuna) on Day 11, that helped alot. I do not feel restriction but I do recognize when I over eat it feels alot like when I use to eat way to much and was miserable for hours but no BPing or sliming. Mushies was defined to me as anything I could mash with fork tines so sounds like we are getting the same advice. I just cant puree my food! I do not feel like I am white knuckling it yet but I do stop myself from eating as much as my eyes want me to. Glad to hear someone else is nervous about that first fill....Frankly I am scared to death!

Hello, I had my surgery on Monday May 23rd 2011 I think I'm doing pretty well. I'm still sore. 14 days of liquids is kinds tough, I can't wait to eat real food even one bite sounds good to me. it sucks because of the holiday weekend and I keep thinking about how much fun everyone is having eating all that potato salad and cheeseburgers hehehe.

I am looking forward to a new day tomorrow with a trip to the store to buy food items to keep me on track! I have no pain anymore. I do walk, use bicycle and work on my feet for 5hrs a day. So I am hoping my bad choices today will not make the scale go up! I was wondering what most of you are eating..mushy stage?

I had my surgery on the 10th, doing good so far. I am feeling not tons of restriction, but I know this is a long process. I think my first fill will be june14th. At least that what it seems like they were hinting toward at my last appt. I don't feel much hunger, but I don't feel too full much either. When I get in one of those eating bingey moods it's hard to find something to satisfy my hunger, probably because my hunger is mental. I feel this whole process has been way more mentally challenging than I expected!

How much has everyone lost?

I lost 26 pre op, but gained 9 the one day I was in the hosp... Doesn't make much sense, so I'm not sure how to count it. Then I lost the 9, plus 9.6 more since the 10th, total 35.6

I am just hoping for 10 a month and I'll be happy.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
