I have close to 200 lbs to loose as well. I was banded on 11-19-2010, and so far I have lost nearly 50 lbs. I have about another 150 to go, so do not get discouraged. There are a lot of people out there like us that have that kind of weight to loose. My surgeon told me that to him it seems easier for those that have a lot more weight to loose than for those that need to loose less than 100 lbs. Again, good luck

Please do not get discouraged. I was banded 8-26-11 and I started with 170lbs to lose. Just focus on one day at a time. Come to these boards for encouragement from others. That has helped me alot and I know that is a big reason I have lost 85lbs. The input of my fellow banders has been so good! I live to far away to go to support group often so this has been a lifesaver for me. YOU can do this!!! Sending loads of encouragement your way!

Hi Steph -

I lost 250 pounds and have kept it off. My surgery was in May 2004 and it was the best thing I ever did! You can read my success story at Sandi's Story. If you want an idea of what I did to lose the weight you may want to register for the free call coming up Wednesday evening The 10 Lessons of Successful Lap Band Patients. You may get some useful tips for your journey. It is a long, but very rewarding road. Stay in touch and let us know how you're doing.

Best of luck to you on your journey. I didn't have an exact amount that I needed to lose, but I know losing 200 pounds would still leave me overweight according to BMI charts. I had my band done in January 2007 and have lost 172 pounds so far. I think I'm within about 25 pounds of being in a place to have excess skin removed....ugh. another surgery. but can't wait! ...take your journey seriously. It's not a race. You don't have to lose it in a year. Just like the story says, slow and steady wins the race. My first year I had some health problems unrelated to the band, so I only lost about 50 pounds. I god discouraged, but picked up my big girl pants and started again when I was healthy.

Honestly, I had to lose almost 100 pounds before I felt like exercising. Now I feel great. There are challenges, daily, but it's so worth it. My kids have a mom that can keep up with them when we're playing outside. How awesome it feels to fit down the slide!

I was worrying about this as well.... I see a lot of people who have 80 or 100 lbs to loose and I wondered if I can do it. I have just under 160 lbs to loose to reach a good BMI weight for my height!

Thank you so much for posting this, it has been great to read that other people have had this much and even more to loose.

We all can do it, I'm not going to worry now. I haven't been banded yet but I see my surgeon next Friday to schedule my surgery date (YIPEE) so I'm very excited about that.

I've read that if you do small things to alter your portions and diet prior to the surgery it makes things a little easier to I'm starting now to try and shape my new diet.

Thank you again, this site has been so inspiring and informationational. I too live in the middle of nowhere and don't have an opportunity to attend a face-to-face meeting so this is my "meeting" when I need help or information.

Faith

Hi dear,

I have been banded since December 28.2010. I have lost 15 kg so far. I know it is hard for us because it rquires energy, support, and patience. Be patient because I am quite sure you can make it.

Just follow the recommended instructions and diet , and you will hopefully make it.

Good luck :)

I started my journey on 11/24/2009 at 282 pounds with my personal goal to get to 160 pounds. I continually lost weight for the first 10 months. As of September 2010, I was down to 218 pounds exercising at least 4 to 5 days per week and doing well. However, I have struggled with the horrific death of my father in February 2010 and have gone backwards. Since September things have slowed a bit and I have been getting discouraged and I am up to 233 pounds. Recently a friend asked me to begin working out with her and I am now back on track, working out every day and trying to track my food intake better. My father is the one that talked me into having the surgery because he was concerned for my health and I am not going go backwards....I've come too far! Never give up....keep working at it!!!

I felt the same way when I first came on this board when I was banded in Sept 2009. my goal is 263 lbs and as of today I'm down 153 lbs. the weight is still coming off although a little more slowly than when I first got banded, and the PA I met with today explained that it's because I don't have a much weight to lose. But, a pound lost is better than a pound gained!! Best of luck on your journey!!!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
