November bandsters unite!!

chew your food a freaking hundred times

That's going to be really hard for me. I eat like a starving dog most of the time. I've been trying, but I haven't really been able to make it stick yet. Guess I'll have to learn pretty soon!

I am new as well and I already have a surgery date for Nov 18, 10...less than 5 weeks away and I am very excited but extremely nervous!!! I have read so much information about the procedure that I felt I was going around in circles...

My husband unfortunately can not get the time off and wants me to stay a couple days past the surgery to relax and be ready for the 4.5 hr plane ride home. He could have got the weekend but that was it!

I choose to pay for a friend of mine to come with me who had the surgery 2 years ago and has been through all of it...she is a major help and I sponge everything off her for information!

Good luck everyone, I wish you all the best and hope to keep up to date with all of your stories...:)

Nice to see all the new members here!! Hi to all of you!!

My date is 11/11, so as of 11/1, I am starting my pre-op diet. The longer I am on it, hopefully the more weight I will lose.

Been under a lot of stress lately. My 94 year old nana was in the hospital and thankfyully is doing better. We had to get in a assisted living facility right away. My mom passed away, so my 2 brothers and I were feverishly rushing to get things is order for her. Needless to say, stress+me= unhealthy foods!! UGH!! But I am trying to get back on track, and as I said, 11/1 is my start date for pre-op. I have gradually been buying the things I need, and will get the rest of it tomorrow. My nutritionist said to have at least 95 shakes available for the 2 week post op diet. I cannot believe it is almost here!! I am just so excited to change my life!!

I am super excited. I got my FINAL Insurance Authorization yesterday! Now that I know that this is going to actually happen I am getting super nervous. I go for my pre-op on the October 19th, start my pre-op diet October 22nd, and get banded on November 1st. I know that it is going to be life changing. :)

Hi everyone! Must be very exciting to have a date scheduled! This pre-op preparation has been long and grueling for me! I have Aetna and it seems they have a criteria to follow prior to authorization. So, I did everything that they asked, submitted a letter of medical necesity myself and now I am left to wait. I wouldn't understand why they won't approve if they don't, I have followed their requirements precisely, we'll have to wait and see. I am thinking postively that once it does get approved I can offficially become a November Bandster Girl!! I am also looking for a buddy to share this experience with, so that we can motivate and be accountable to one another. If anyone is interested, let me know. :)

I posted this in reply to another thread, but though it should go here, too:

I guess I should step up and ask to be in this group as well. As of yesterday, all prerequisites have been met, and my surgeon has gone for approval from my insurance. (Tricare Prime.) I'm told they're quick to approve, and they're trying to pencil in my surgery for early November. We'll see how it goes.

Hard to think that after all this time, it's finally just a few weeks away... :)

Dave

So what are you doing for pre-op and post-op as far as Protein Shakes, Vitamins, etc.

I have already done the Protein shakes and was suppose to have the surgery on 09-16-2010 but my sodium was very low and they couldnt do the surgery, so i am hoping this time will be for real.:)

erik, I bought Muscle Milk Light RTD shakes. I got them at BJ's for 18/$24.99. That is a pretty good price. I tasted and liked it, so that is what I got.

I am interested in the Medifast hot chocolate, as I love hot chocolate! That's the only hot beverage I drink.

I also bought the Carnation Instant Breakfast sugar free to use as well.

I have to look into vitamins, as I have not started them yet. I'll look into the chewables though. I thought I read somwewhere that you can take 2 children's chewables, so I may shack with up with my son's Flintstones!

My surgeon has me on a strict diet starting October 27th...Five Protein Shakes a day and one Fiber drink plus 64 oz of Water or more. Then I have to have 2 Multivitamins, a caiclum calitre, and Vitamin D3. I had to purchase my Vitamins where ever I wanted...so I got liquid and chewable from Walgreen they came up to about 45.00. Now I just have to buy the liquid diet which I have to get it from better MD.net..a kit with 18 boxes of shakes or smoothies, a fiber drink box and two fruit drink boxes with shipping n handling, all 265.15. it should last four weeks or more. I will then have to go buy Protein shakes a couple of weeks after surgery once better md items runs out.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
