Looking for September 2010 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

Glad to see everyone is doing pretty good. Hope those who are having some minor issues, recover quickly and feel normal soon! :yesnod:

Good luck for the upcoming surgeries. WOW this month is coming to an end fast and soon we will ALL be bandsters. :sneaky:

Im doing okay. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks for me... and for the most part I am pretty normal. Unfortunately I discovered that I can eat pretty much anything again. Of course I do limit myself a bit, I do chew chew chew, and I do stop when I feel full. I don't have half the restriction feeling as I did the past 2 weeks but thats to be expected with the healing process and not being swollen much. Though I do still have some swelling in my lower belly where the port is. I've avoided the scale for at least 4 days now. I am scared to get on tomorrow but I do feel that I need to. I don't really know what to think or feel. It would be nice to feel that restriction like I did initially. That would make me feel safe. Im thinking I should not weigh in tomorrow but... I should. Right?

call your surgeon and see him tomorrow!

I ended up having excess air in my band and was miserable for 4 days - couldn't take deep breaths, couldn't walk for more than 2 minutes without becoming breathless - I didn't even sound like myself. It's better to be safe = good luck

Desiree ~ Thanks! I took your advice. Called the doc and they wanted to know how fast I could be there - I got off the phone with them at 9:45 and they had an appointment scheduled for 10:45. Apparently, my band was too tight. They had given me some saline in the band at surgery - but apparently my stomach developed some kind of hemotoma/swelling and it wasnt allowing me to eat/drink anything - this morning I tossed my Cookies (dont I wish) well, not really - after 3 sips of a protien shake.< /p>

So, there you have it - Nasty hiccups, liquid pooling at the back of the throat, lots of saliva build up?? More than likely have too much Fluid in the band... Okay, so I took one for the team. Now we all know.

My band is now completely drained - I go back in 1 month for a fill. In the meantime, I can say I have lost 16 pounds!!:sneaky: But I am sure my insides are shriveled due to lack of hydration..:yesnod: I guess I need to start plumpin' up the inards!

Thanks again for all your help~~

Hi Debbie !

I wore a loose polo shirt & sweat pants for my surgery ( I am a guy ) ... but I advise loose clothing for your Post Op Go Home clothes. It is basically recommended ... you don't want to feel it around your tummy as it will be sensitive.

-Brian

Thanks, Brian and everyone - think i'll go tomorrow and find a pair of sweat pants that are way big for that first day.

I am soooo excited -- tomorrow I can start saying "MY SURGERY IS TOMORROW!" (did that make sense?) I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. Even when I read how some aren't feeling well and about the discomfort and concern, I still can't wait to go there. Even if it's a rough start, I'm looking forward to the journey!

I'll be back tomorrow and then as soon after the surgery as I can.

Prayers and Blessings to you all!

Hi Danielle !

Wednesday is 3 weeks Post Op for me. What are you eating now out of curiosity ? I am about liquid / half Soups / some luncheon meat and some string cheese. Some eggs too. I do have a food processor but it is still boxed up :glare:

This Saturday I went out with a special friend and since we can't go out like we used to for awhile I did TRY to actually eat a burger and within 2 bites I was Restricted and I started to throw it up ! Boy my Band is working.

I did notice my appetite is returning ALTHOUGH I am not really eating too solid foods and not much bad food I am on the OTHER HAND eating A LOT of Soup, eggs, etc... too much in my opinion. Although it is about a quarter to a half of what I am used to eating.

Danide and Brian-

I think one of the challenges for me (us?) is going to be to NOT test the band to see if we can eat just like we used to. That's definitely not a challenge I want to win (sure, I could go get buffalo chicken tenders for lunch and see if I can still eat them, but why? what will that accomplish?). That's tough, but from what I've read, we have some toughing it out to do before we hit a restriction point with fills that keeps us full on less.

I am having a small mental battle with my post-op diet, not because I want more (yet!), but because I did really well low-carbing it pre-op and it is killing me to eat all of these carbs! Anything liquid or mushy tends to be full on carb and for some weird reason I feel like I'm cheating even though I am following my doctors recommended diet. That's crazy. I know I can't really do low carb again until I'm cleared to eat vegetables (and then lean meats), but knowing that my daily diet is yogurt, creamy carby Soup, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, etc. is hard on my psyche. Anyone else dealing with that?

LisaA: good to hear from you!

One more day!

I have a quick question though.

My surgery is not scheduled until 3:30 PM.

Does the don't drink or eat after midnight rule still apply or does it move up to around 8:00 AM?

I don't know if I can go all day long with ANYTHING to drink.

Paigey Trust me when I say I know how you feel... I had the same instruction - nothing to eat or drinking after midnight.

I had to be at the hospital at 11, and I didnt go into surgery until well after 3.

I was told I could take my blood pressure medicine with a SIP of water.. which I did quite literally.. and guess what? the pill got stuck in my throat, to which I chased it down with 2 big gulps.. One to dislodge and the other to help it along. This was about 8AM. Other than that - I had nothing.

Here is the GOOD NEWS.. or at least one way to look at it.. Once you get to the hospital, you keep pretty busy and dont get a chance to give "thirst" must thought.. and all too soon, too soon for me anyway - you will have your IV. I know its not the same as getting your lips wet... But hang in there!

The reward is SO MUCH BETTER!!! ..and if that thought doesnt get you thru.. maybe the fact of knowing that you will be having MORE liquids THAN YOU CAN DREAM OF post-op will :)

To be on the safe side, I would call the doctor's office early in the morning. They may let you have a swallow of Water. But don't count on it. Maybe you should just sleep  a little later tomorrow. If you're like me, the more I think about it the worse it is. Hang in there. As they say, "You've come a long way, baby". :)

POST OP GROCERY SHOPPING -- ANY HINTS?

I'm going to do my post-op grocery shopping tomorrow since my surgery is Wed.. What do I need to get?

Was there anything that was particularly helpful going down. I'll be on liquids for 7-10 days, then mushies. Is the liquid just Protein Shakes and clear Soups, Jello, etc. or has anyone found anything better? What sits best?

I am starting to get nervous. Even all day today people kept asking me if I was nervous about it and I said that I wasn't, but now that it's after midnight Monday night and technically "tomorrow" (Wed) is my surgery, I'm praying I've made the right choice.

I have still struggled (and lost way too many times) with the desire to eat and am just scared that I'll be one of the ones who flop. I want to do it so badly and if I start to see some weight come off, I'm praying that will be the motivation I need to eat right after the surgery and for the rest of my life.

Well, any help you can give me for the grocery list will be appreciated. Thanks! Good luck and prayers for the Tues. banders -- my fellow Wed. banders -- and those finishing up the last few days of the month. We may be last, but we just get to benefit from all the experience that goes before us!

Debbie

Thanks, PitPat -- I am so grateful for this forum and how everyone is so helpful and encouraging. I can't wait to be one of the banded!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
