MAY BANDSTERS ~ How are you doing?

Recommended Posts

My surgery was May 7th and I have lost 22 pounds, including the pre-op diet thast I started on April 23rd. Hunger has returned in a BIG way for me too and I can eat alot more than I could even 2 weeks ago. I worry about this all the time and have not seen much change in the scale this last week, just pray it does not go up! I get my first fill this week on June 9th. I am praying for restriction, because I know I am eating too much to feel full. I would love to take a few bites again and feel full. I miss that feeling that I had a couple of weeks ago. On a good note, My band has been healing well I suppose, the tenderness is better everyday. I have not had any sickness, vomiting, nausea, nothing, as I have read on here so many people have. And every food that I have tried has gone down fine, dont think I have had any 'stuck' episodes, from what I have read, I'm sure I would know it. Good luck to us all!

I hope all of the other May Bandsters are doing well!

Hi I was banded May 13th. I am amazed at all of those of you who are moving on to real food. I am on mushies for another week. Then soft, then real. Honestly, I am so tight that I am okay with it. I went in with some pain last Wednesday and the Dr. took out some of the fill he put in at surgery. I am now sitting at about .5ccs. I am doing really well, and am really happy. My struggle is getting in enough calories. I end the day between 450 and 600 most days. Hoping that when I move to soft foods that will go up a bit.

Congrats to all, looks like we are all doing amazingly!

I was banded may 17th. Since surgery, I've lost 18lbs. Weight loss has definetly slowed down since staring soft solid foods. I'm hoping to get my first fill june 30th! But so far so good! Haven't thrown up, or had any nausea. Having a lil trouble with cravings tho. I have a major sweet tooth. So, anything sweet is a temptation for me. Also, need to start working out too,to speed up weight loss. Other than I'm Doing, and healing great. My surgeon was awesome.

Post-surgical doctor's appt today. Lost 16 lbs, just some residual swelling, bloating and some Water retention. Moved me to soft foods for two weeks, scheduled the first fill for 6/28!!! He told me I already have 3.5cc in the band which is amazing since I feel NO RESTRICTION. Also showed me pictures they took during the surgery?! I don't ever have to see those again!

Looking forward to something other than Slim Fast for dinner :-).

Banded 5-4-10, doing better each day. Last week was first week for solids, but I had something funky going on like some swelling or something, and didn't do so well. So far this week has been better. I've had soft-scrambled eggs, baked chicken tenders, baked fish... but my most favorite was a SALAD!! Took forever to make it because i hand chopped each ingredient. it was almost like confetti! but it was delicious and I loved every bite. Bought some Tyson fully-cooked mesquite chicken strips (like for fajitas) and put a couple of those plus a boiled egg on the salad, so it was full of Protein too. YummEEE!!! I am scheduled for a fill in one week, but not sure I need it, as I am not hungry, I'm losing weight, and if I'm not extremely careful with taking tiny bites and chewing the hound out of everything, it is really uncomfortable to eat. So Ill just have to talk to the doc and see what he thinks. So far I have avoided bandster hell, but my day may be coming. I'm just enjoying the band right now. Good luck to all you other May Bandsters!!!

How about making your own Protein Shake with a little fresh fruit. You can buy dry whey Protein and mix it with skim milk to add even more protein. Good luck!

Bandster Hell is the time you are banded until you have a fill. (And from my understanding- this can be even after a fill when you still do not have much restriction.) It sucks, but gets better with every fill I think. I am sitting at 4ccs in my band from my first fill...and feel like I can eat an elephant (although it is more like a small dog ) Good Luck! There are many new terms for us bandsters!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
