When did the scale finally move for you?

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 1/27/09. In the first 2.5 weeks, I lost 14lbs. Now nothing. I know I am losing inches because my clothes are looser. People tell me they can see it in my face. But what the  I want to see it on the scale. I know I did the right thing having the surgery but I want to see something happen here.

Yes, I am following the diet. Yes, I am exercising. I got to the Y 6 days a week. 3 of those days I take a deep Water workout class and the other 3 days I do treadmill and some strength training. Just getting frustrated and could use some encouragement.

Keep it up. I got banded 11-24-08 and didn't get any restriction/benefit until after my 3rd fill. I was stuck at 220 lbs for over 6 weeks and could eat almost anything, except fish or ground taco meat. Once the band was filled and I got proper restriction (last week) losing the weight has been no problem at all. Lost 5lbs like that! Not feeling hungry at all and it severely limits your intake to the "full" point like you won't believe. You will get full on almost nothing.

All I can say is hang in there. It's a long journey and the band will work as promised/advertised. Give it a little time. I was concerned as you are now. Don't be. It will happen.

I too am not losing. First 2 weeks I dropped 5kg, then the feeling of restriction went and although I am trying to be careful and follow the diet, I am able to eat whatever I want. I am only 4 weeks out from surgery but the last 2 weeks I've lost nothing. 1st fill next week, so I sure hope to achieve the restriction again and hopefully start to lose again. Very frustrating, I understand how you feel. Even my family think it's a joke!

If you can maintain the first 6 weeks after surgery while you are healing you are doing well!! You are not expected to lose yet. Most people gain a few pounds before their first fill. Don't be discouraged. You are just starting your journey!!

I hope your family will start being more supportive. As I said, you are healing now and not expected to lose. Tell your family in 6 months, the jokes on them!!!

Hang tough, I too thought something was wrong with me and was the surgery a mistake. But the band will work for you just be a little patient. I had surgery in November and after the first 2 weeks the weight loss came to a screeching halt. Then after 1st fill the weight started falling off again and now im down 55 lbs. It never comes off as fast as we would like which is frustrating but if you follow what you are doing it will start coming off again. Good Luck

I am so, so glad I read this thread! I was banded two weeks ago, and I feel no restriction. I lost 9 pounds teh first week, but nothing the second. I am happy to find out I am not alone! I will try and stay on the diet and wait for my first fill. Hopefully that will help and the weight will start coming off. I check the scale daily, and although my pants feel better on my, the scale says I am making no progress.

I had my surger exactly 2 weeks ago today. The first 1.5 weeks I lost 15 pounds, but nothing since then. I am eating a little food here and there because I can't do the puree and liquids any more. I was feeling light headed and really tired. I don't seem to have a problem getting some food down which is weird to me. No pain nothing. I have my appoint with dr this Friday i hope he can tell me when I can get my first fill...

How long until you get your first fill after the surgery?

Hi

I am really pleased that everyone here has shared their experience, thanks for starting this thread, it is really reassuring.

I had surgery 9 days ago and am feeling really upbeat, with hardly any pain, but after 2 days post-op, my appetite came back with a vengeance and I got worried that this feeling was 'normal'.?

I am sticking to the diet sheet of mushies and am consuming no more than 900/1000 cals per day. I feel like I would if sticking to a rigid diet - deprived and and hungry  I will stick to it as there is no point over-eating at this stage putting on, to take it off! I have found that I do fill up faster than I would normally - that's good isn't it?

One thing I have noticed is that after food (slops) my tummy rumbles like crazy. This morning at work, I was embarassed and am sure the guys I sit next to could hear me! :crying:

I have my first fill on 21st of this month and am excited about the forthcoming 'squeeze' and for the band to work.

Good luck everyone......

My stomach is making loud sounds too. I mentioned it to my doc and he said it is trapped gas beneath the band. He said it is harmless, but the way to prevent it is to try and suck in less air when you drink. Some docs say stay away from straws for this very reason. I cannot wait for my first fill to get some hunger relief!

Hang in there, it does happen! I just posted a thread about this very subject. I followed the diet & excercise plan religiously after surgery and lost 4lbs TOTAL. NOT easy to see when you get on the scale every day and watch the same 2lbs go up then down, etc. Honestly, I bought a pair of shorts 2 weeks ago that are a full size smaller than I fit in. When I tried them on, they were nowhere near fitting (seriously more than 6" in between button & button hole) but I kept them anyway. I tried them on this weekend and they FIT (tight, but fit and zipped). I literally SCREAMED w/excitement and went shopping. I tried on one full size smaller than what I currently wear and EVERYTHING FIT!! In fact, everything I bought was from the "regular size" section. All XL but at least only one X :crying:

It came quick and all the hard work is paying off...be patient and hang it..it will work!

I LOVE MY BAND!! (no fills yet either, skipped 2 )

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
