I had Lap Band Surgey on 07/25/08. I lost 11 lbs the first week and nothing since. I had one fill on 8/24/08 and don't go back until 9/24/08. I'm totally depressed. I knew this was going to be a slow process but not this slow. I eat around 1400 calories, drink my Water, eat my Protein and walke 30 minutes every day (about all I can do). Anyone else having this problem? How do you keep from being depressed?

Might want to try some strength training and increase your cardio.

It can be hard, but just keep in mind...you didn't gain weight in 2 months so it is going to take time to come off. I too, get discouraged. I was banded on August 11th and have lost a total of 24 lbs. since starting the preop diet 2 weeks before. I thought that it would be easier, but its ok everything in time.

I don't even get my first fill until Oct. 1st! So my loss has really slowed down now. You just have to keep at it and know that in the end it will be good.

Good luck.

Please don't get soo frustrated, the lap band is a tool, not a cure all. I was banded 8/2006 and only lost 70 pounds in the first year. After a long plateau, I finally got serious and started to eat right and diet. Cardio is the best thing you can do for yourself. If only 30 minutes at a time right now,,,,maybe do 2 or 3 times a day if you can. Swimming is also good cardio, esp if you have bad joints. I am not sure of your situation, but feel free to keep in contact if I can be of any help. p.sticern@yahoo.com

You might also check with your nutritionist about your calorie intake. My doctor told me not to eat more than 1000 calories a day. I vary between 800-1000 every day and have consistently lost weight -- HOWEVER -- not much until after I had a fill. Take this time and try to find some ways to get moving that you enjoy so that when you do get restriction, the ball will already be going in the right direction!

My dr told me before I was even banded not to expect much weight loss in the first 6 mos. Now I know I read on hear people who have lost 50lbs in 2 mos and I so hope that can be me, but I know everyone is different & everyone will lose different. Just keep ur head up try to eat right & maybe increase ur daily workouts to 45 mins. As my family tells me...u have done the hard part (having the surgery) now ever thing else should be a gimme!!!!!

Hang in there you will lose the weight. we had our surgery about the same time . I had mine on July 21. I think you have to give your body time to adjust to the band. when you go back again for another fill that will help a lot. The 1400calories does that include the calories from your protien shakes as well? I have had a lot of trouble with the protien thing. I have bought everything and i just can not drink them. So now i just take my Multivitamin and try to eat foods with protien in it. But i am sure i still am not getting enough. Good luck to you and remember it's to soon to get depressed give it a little more time . Lynnlynn

Hi Boykin, I was banded June 23 and have only lost 2 lbs total. Everything I have read here and other places stress that you might not lose weight until your 3rd or 4th fill. The restriction you have then will affect you hunger center at the top of your stomach and make it easier to eat less. You are exactly on target according to my fill nurse. I have had 2 fills and am now at 5cc in a 10cc band. I do think 1400 calories is a little high to lose much weight but it will be easier when you get more fills. I totally understand your worry, frustration, and depression, but we (most of us) have been there or are still there and you will lose weight.

I would definitely speak to your doc because you may be eating too many calories. I, personally, have to keep to under 1000. My doctor also suggested going back to liquids for a couple of weeks. He actually had a patient who stayed on full liquids for 2 months and lost 100 pounds. I headed his advice, and have been on liquids for the last 2 weeks. I havent weighed myself yet, but I can tell that the weight is falling off now. I also noticed that it dramatically decreased my appetite and cravings I was having. Just a thought

Hang in there!

How do you keep from being depressed?

it's hard not to be disappointed in the lbs coming off faster - but they also didn't pile on overnight. i had to have 7 fills till i got restriction & only lost 24lbs in the first 4 months....to keep from getting depressed i just looked at my weightloss in 10lb increments.., get out of the 190's, 180's & so forth. to look at the total needed all at once was very daunting to me.

i would start journaling your food & continue with your exercise. your calories "may" be a bit high, however if your working out hard - you may need more. talk w/your dr about that one - good luck!!!

It is hard. I had to keep my calories around 800-1200. I also mix it up...really high calories for 2-3 days, lower the following days.

I swear exercise is the key...Since I have not been working out consistently, I have only lost 5 pounds in 3 months. When I was working out I lost 70 the first 6 months....

I share in your frustration! I was banded 08/18/08 and I lost 12 pounds on the liquid pre-op diet and 11 pounds the first week after surgery. I have gained a couple of that back. I am also walking 30-45 minutes a day and the scales aren't moving! I have no advice or help to offer but I wanted you to know that you are not in this alone! I'm not giving up! Hang in there!

I had my surgery on 7/14, have had 2 fills since and I am scheduled to go back on 9/23, I was having a problem where everytime I ate I vomited, I was getting scared so I called and went today and they removed 1cc and gave me some ideas of things to try as they want me to stop vomiting. I have lost 47 lbs but 22 of that was my 2 week preop diet but they tell me I am doing great, I lost 7 lbs this past week because of the vomiting and they said that is not the way to do it. I walk between 3-5 miles a day and bowl 1 night a week for my exercise. It does get better.

Hi,

Don't be depressed it will come off, but with me I believe exercise is the key. I had my surgery in February and I am down 70 lbs today. My doctor tells me only eat when I'm hungry. Trying eating less calories a day. Drink lots of Water.< /p>

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
