I've got HIVES really bad....HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

Tuesday night I stared itching all over. When I woke up on Wednesday, I was covered I Hives. On Wed I tried benydril pills and Anti itch creme and nothing worked, I could barely stand my clothes on my skin. I called my Gen MD and she gave me some ointment and pills.< /p>

They have helped alot but I still feel itchy a lil and I still have the hives. I have stopped all meds (Loritab, Zantac, and Diuretics) I have not called my surgeon yet, I am kind of afraid he will tell me that I am allergic to my band.

Open to all comments. Thanks

Have you tried an oatmeal bath? It usually helps at least temporarily. You can make a home made oatmeal bath by just processing oatmeal and powdered milk, or just the oatmeal alone.

I couldn't imagine a band causing hives. Have you ate anything different? My sister gets hives from tuna, and as far as we know she was never allergic to tuna as a child. But you never know, you should call your Dr just to be on the safe side. Good luck, I hope you feel better!

Check back with your Dr. and see if he/she has any objections to you taking Zyrtec. It can be used in liquid form--just use the proper amount for age----as I THINK the liquid they sell is kid strength.

I suffered from unexplained hives for years-----ideopathic urticaria!!! Fancy name for hella itchy bumps!!!! At that time Zyrtec was Rx only----and it made life so much better!!! It did make me really sleepy so I took it at night----lasted for 24 hours. Within a month I got to where I could take it every other day and it kept the hives away.....eventually I was taking 1/2 a pill every 4-5 days and did good. Also helped my itchy eyes from regular allergies. Then the hives went away as strangly as they appeared.

I have never heard of anyone being allergic. I would imagine it is either stress related from the nerves going into the banding, or one of the meds they used.

IF you feel them on your lips or inside your cheeks, get to a Dr.!!! They have been known to swell throats closed.

Hope you get relief, they really are miserable!!!

That might be a good idea---IF you have been released to tub baths yet.....depends on how well your incisions have healed....I had it in my head you had JUST been banded--DUh I need to read better!!

Thanks for all of the comments. I have not had any allergies to anything. Also for regular allergies, I had accupuncture preformed about 3 years ago and I have been allergy free since.

As far as food I am still on liquids and have been for the past 8 weeks due to a prior surgery on my jaw.

I am not sure that I can take a bath yet, all of my incisions are not healed. I received meds from my regular MD she prescribed onitment and pills, they are very tiny but a high dose because I was so itchy.

So far so good, the only time I get itchy is if I start to get warm, so I keep my house like a liltle chilly.

I was just nervous if I was allergic to my band, that would be the worse.

Hi!

I also have had hives - (not since being banded) and found a terrific anti-itch cream suggested by my allergist - it is called Sarna. You can find it at the pharmacy - it is over the counter and really helped with the itching.

I also take xyzel once every day and have not had an outbreak of hives.

Good luck to you - get Sarna - it really does help when no other cream did for me!

My friend had the same thing happen to her (the hives) after surgery. She tried everything and nothing worked. Her Dr didnt' know what was going on. She later discovered after going to see a dermatologist she had psoriasis that was brought out by the surgery. It hide itself under other rash issues, too, for a long time before surgery (like in yeast) but the surgery make it lots work.. I'd see a Dermatologist if it doesn't go away.

I only had hives once in my life and the doc said they were from stress!!!

Even if you can't take a soaking bath you can still make up the oatmeal in a basin/bucket/sink of warm Water and use handtowels or washcloths and lay them on the skin.

Avoiding the incisions as much as you can. I can't remember what the dr perscribed for me but plain old benadryl or any antihystamine helps with the itching.

If the itching gets to bad as a last resort you can use oragel or any tooth numbing gel/liquid too. it won't work for long but can sometimes provide instant relief for 15-20 minutes, while meds kick in.

I have had to do this with my daughter when she gets poison ivy to keep her from digging at it.

I have hives and I have to take Zyrtec everyday for the rest of my life. I told my surgeon about it and he says it's fine. The meds will not harm the band.

Is it possible you could be allergic to one of the ingredients in whatever Protein supplement you are using? If you are using a few different kinds, you might want to limit yourself to one particular kind for a few days and sort of weed out which one could be causing problems. I know that was a concern of mine since I have many food allergies. Fortunately, I did ok but there are a few Protein Bars I ate pre surgery that made my mouth itch so I stopped eating them right away. Good luck with finding the culprit!!

HI...I FEEL YOU ITCH!!!

I am suffering from what I called hives but it is really like chicken bumps...and it ITCHES!!!

I may be who betrthnever is talking about..she's a friend of mine!..

Anyhoo, I went to the derm and I have now been diagnosed with psoriasis...I had several skin issues this past year...now I know why!

The doc..surgeon..said the other day that the stress of surgery AND the fact that I have an inert thing in me...the band...my immunities are trying to eat it up...My port incision is taking forever to heal...IN fact I may not get my fill on Wedsday because of it...bummer for me...

BUT...I am getting better....slowly...I have had this since the day after surgery...they thought at first it was the pain reliever...Loritab can cause itches..

Anyway..it is traveling my ENTIRE BODY...now it is on my forearms, calves, groin etc...but the chest area is better..oh yea...you should have seen my scalp..I was snowing!

So, MY ADVICE...GO TO A DERMATOLOGIST...I waited too long..I have seen my surgeon every week for 4 weeks LOL....

Good Luck and pm me if needed!

Shelley

I'm a little late on this topic, but I SO feel your pain. I broke out in huge hives every day for nearly 2 years. I tried everything to get rid of them. After stopping every medication but my birth control, I finally stopped taking the birth control. Guess what? The hives stopped. The birth control was Yasmin. I was allergic to the unique synthetic hormones in it.

Probably not the same in your case, but I feel your pain... hives are terrible. Mine were best relieved with cold showers and oatmeal baths.

And very cool rooms, any kind of heat made it a LOT worse.

I just revisited what I wrote last..about the psoriasis...now they say it was not that!

So, I finally got a steroid shot and over night tey got better!

Then, a few weeks ago, I broke out again!!! The only thing I could think of was I had just started taking Zyrtec again for my allergies! (I had been on it for like 2 years...then went off it when we couldn't figure my hives out in June...well, I went off it and the Patches on my face went away but I still have some dermatitis on fingers and my Butt smile too! UGH!!!!

Who knows, I am sick of going to the doctor and sick of itches and assorted creams! I just want normal skin again...

Good Luck everyone!

My experience with hives is that if they are ALL over your body then it is something you ate. I had a breakout last year and they were everywhere, even between my toes!!!! I took prednisone and the itch stopped within hours.....

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
