Just ate....

Recommended Posts

I just ate a double six dollar burger, a triple whopper w/cheese and a whole bloomin onion. Then I decided a chocolate brownie earthquake from DQ sounded good. That reminded me that I hadn't stopped at pizza Hut in awhile and ate an entire large combo w/anchovies.

I still felt like eating (head hunger) so I decided to try some deep fried whale blubber strips. Wow! Delicious.

Ahhh . . . lilMiss, you are kidding, but I wasn't this time. I really did eat all those things this weekend. We live in a resort park in the summer, and they had all sorts of barbecues and potlucks, plus my family had their own on Friday and another on Saturday to try to clean up the leftovers. Unfortunately, I did my part in that. Good news is I'm back on track today and did my bike riding, so I'm not feeling too bad about it.

I am very interested in the sleeve - it is the newest alternative to the band - I just got my band but am hoping I didn't make a mistake - I need to lose 45 lbs and the doctor said I didn't have enough to lose to justify the sleeve but it seems so much better long-term and I wouldn't have this ugly goose egg port thing sticking up on my stomach that I hate. My husband is considering surgery and I think he may be happier with the sleeve since no foreign object in your body but I am worried about it because it is not something you can reverse.

Why would you want to reverse it? For what reason would you want to regain weight? The ONLY reason to remove a band is if the band is causing problems.

The ability to reverse surgery is appealing to newbies but when you get to goal your perspective tends to change and you want permanent in a bad way. Our food issues are not going to go away, why would we want our surgery type to go away? See what I mean?

Plain:

But, the sleeve is technically a foreign object in your body, right?

Ok, I went back and looked, and it appears I'm totally wrong. I am confused...

It's just a smaller stomach, that's all. There are foreign objects in there if you consider the staples.

SickNTired:

Is a sleeve as common as GB or LB?

Not in the US, it is in other countries. It's been around for about 50 years for weight loss but gastrectomies have been around since the 1800s. Today they are using a technique that is great, no stomach stretching, faster weight loss than banding, more weight loss than banding, and fewer complications than bands or bypass.

The problem is that there really are very few skilled surgeons doing the procedures. Lots of newbie surgeons but not many experienced surgeons. For this procedure it really has to be done by an experienced surgeon. Pleatman started doing them and it isn't working out well. He is the one that charges Mexican prices but he's in the US. He laughs about his death stats saying that they would have died from obesity issues anyway, explains that he's increasing his prices by $1500 for out of state patients because $2K isn't enough and he has to earn a living too... etc. The problem is that surgeons like him are starting to do sleeves and their stats are poor, stats such as leaks. Pleatman already has leaks and he's only done 70 sleeves. That's not good at all.

So going to someone who has done at least 250 is important so you have a base of stats to draw from.

The more people that want sleeves (and that is growing by HUGE numbers since the five year stats came out) the more surgeons will be doing them and they will all be starting their learning curve so global stats will be increasing and not for the better. Then the sleeve will get a crappy rep and that's too bad, it won't be the procedure, it will be the newbie surgeons learning the technique.

Yes I know it sounds bad but after losing so much weight over the years on Atkins and NutriSystem, etc. and gaining it back and all of my weight is in my stomach - I look like I am 8 months pregnant - I have never seen anyone hold weight in one place like this - I even went and had a CT Scan to make sure I didn't have a tumor because it looks so unnatural but it is just subdermal fat that cannot be lipo'd and is hard to lose especially with my hormone replacement medications. My husband is getting the band too soon - he has about 80 to lose so we are doing it together. Thanks!

I don't think it sounds bad at all. I wish I would have done something at 45# vs. waiting until it was so far out of hand.

OMG this food is so good!

As many know I was on liquids for 4 months so I've been trying to make up for lost time with food since my post op diet allowed solids.

KittenQutie is out of town and Grandma needed some things from the store so I took her. When we got back to her house she had made chicken, homemade Mac & cheese, corn bread, potatoes, and greens. I never ate greens before, didn't think I was gonna like the stuff. But you know what? THIS IS SO GOOD! OMG! It's taking me forever to eat, two bites and I'm full. I gotta learn to eat around a sleeve! Grandma's know how to cook so well.

She's going to teach me to make greens and someday I'm going to do it.

I'm in heaven. Grandma food is sooo freak'en good!

And btw, I'm not sharing, I'm not giving any away, I'm not even letting the dog try it. It's MINE! If it takes me all night to eat this plate of food, so be it. My evening is planned!

This damn sleeve works too well!

I have the band - 14 days post-op - my husband is considering the sleeve - can you tell me what the main difference is as far as restriction, healing, appetite, full feeling, etc. I would really appreciate it. I am wondering if I shouldn't have gotten the sleeve - the reason I didn't was because of the irreversibility of it but maybe that would be a good thing. Thanks!!

I admit, I love the sleeve. I never did eat all that food last night, there was no way. And let me tell you, I tried! I put forth serious effort but I couldn't do it. Four bites was my limit.

Why would you want reversible? Is there some reason you'd want to regain all your excess weight? ;o)

I thought the same thing at first, that's why I got a band. What I didn't realize is that the only reason to remove your band is if the band itself is causing problems. Now that I'm a size 4 I'd do just about anything to PREVENT reversible, I don't want to regain 130#.

If you want some info email me through the LBT system and I'll send you a bunch of studies and such. I'll send you a bunch of links, sleeve info, everything.

Without trying to hijack this very important thread on food (heh) here are a few stats:

Band: lose 1-2# weekly

Sleeve: lose 2-3# weekly

Band: lose 50-70% of excess weight

Sleeve: lose 70-80% of excess weight

The sleeve has the fewest long term complications compared to bands and bypass.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
