Hello all. I woke up today wondering...

Have any of you ever had a suicide attempt in the past and told the psych about it during your evaluation.

I have one suicide attempt when I was 15 and my nurse knows so I know I need to tell my psych when it's time for that evaluation...also I used to be a cutter and have scars on my arms etc.

I'm worried that even if it was so many years ago when I did it if he will say I am not emotionally stable for surgery.

Please someone let me know so I don't go crazy.

This surgery is the only thing that keeps me going, I don't want to lose it all due to a stupid mistake I made 7 years ago.

I also had attempts when I was 12. I had the surgery 6 months ago, so obviously they didnt hold it against me. I'm 25 now, so I guess they figured I grew and matured

During my pscyh eval I was asked if I've had suicidal thoughts or ever attempted it so I know it's probably a question you too will be asked. If you've seen a therapist for your previous attempt and cutting, the pscyh will probably need to talk to them about it. If anything, you might need to go have a couple of appointments with the psych for him/her to be able to determine if you are suitable for the surgery or not.

Hang in there!

Hello froggi1985,

I read your post, and I don't have an answer. I don't know how they look at our past histories. I have had a history too, as probably many have. Mine was longer in the past, and that's where I left it.

I will be thinking of you. Not knowing can be nerve racking and I hope someone can give you more information on this issue.

Let us know and post again during your wait if it helps just to know you bounce off your apprehension feelings. Aren't they a Pain!!

If it's been 7 years, you've worked past the event in some form or fashion. If you have been under treatment since(therapy, anti-depressents etc) then weight loss might be a great contributor to lessening the depression. Either way, just go hve the evaluation done. If you can go to your regular psychiatrist, so much the better.

I was 15 and I went to counseling for like 5 years. I am on depression meds and I see a pyschiatrist once every 3 months. I don't do counseling now but I talk to my psychiatrist. Do you think that helps? =/

The key point to everything u said was... I USE TOO...... Congratulations on stopping cutting... U r so brave to share your story.. U r a soilder and trust me when i say that what we go thru can and will help someone else. That should have nothing to do with your ability to get the lap band. All of us have issues, and one thing i can tell u is that phyc do try do is to see if YOU DON'T LOOSE THE WEIGHT with the band will u try to attempt the same things that drove u to the edge before? You have taken control of the situations that push u thus far and let her or him know that you need assistance and the band will be a great aid in assisting u to loose the weight. Let him know that you already know that it is not a magic bullet...and u will be fine...

Thanks for this reply mstrina! I was really starting to worry and you made me feel a lot better. I know the band isn't a cure all and that I have to work, I am working hard as of now with this diet. I haven't felt bad about myself like I did back when I was younger ever, never have even thought about hurting myself again or anything. I know I can change my life and I want to change it for the best. I sure hope the psych they give me understands that. I'm all for a new WONDERFUL life.

This surgery is the only thing that keeps me going,

This is the only thing you said that concerns me. Your past is something to be considered, but your mindset of today is much more critical.

If this surgery is the only thing keeping you going, you are setting yourself up for disaster. This surgery requires dedication, diligence, restraint and lots of work if you are to get to goal.

In the past year I have seen, and continue to see, so many folks who went into this knowing that it wasn't going to be easy, yet today it is evident that they did indeed still expect divine intervention to make all their weight disappear. This surgery was the only thing that kept them going...and now that the surgery hasn't provided the miracle they wanted (and was never going to provide), they are distraught.

Please, go to your eval and openly discuss your past and present concerns. Dig deep and be sure of your motivations and expectations for this surgery. Don't be one of those who just spout the right answers to get to approval. You will be doing yourself no favors.

All that being said, if done with the right motivations and expectations, this surgery can be the most amazing thing you could ever do for yourself! I hope you get in there and come out the other side ready to take this by the horns and get healthy! I know you can do it, just make sure you don't skip any critical steps.

Take each day one at a time, be honest with the phys, people change as they mature. And remember the band is only a tool to help loose weight you have to be strong and adhere to all the rules to make it work

I found this post rather rude, I know I have to work hard and It's going to be a long battle. I'm just saying KNOWING that I can actually have this surgery is keeping me going and I don't want to have that taken away from me.

I know the band is only a tool, the rest is up to me. I am not ignorant.:welldoneclap:

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
