Happy Saturday Everyone!!

Well, I have about two weeks to go before surgery. I went this past Thursday for my pre-op interview and testing at Sentara Careplex. I had the nicest nurse who was very friendly and knowledgeable. I had my blood work done, chest x-ray and EKG. All tests passed with flying colors. :) I have the 3.5 hour class on Tuesday morning and then I see Dr. Clark Tuesday afternoon for my pre-op appointment.

I work with the Anesthesia department at the hospital so I have already spoke to the CRNA I want on my case. I am getting so excited and the time is getting so close. I still need to do some shopping to get everything prepared.

This next week is going to be tough eating wise. My wedding anniversary is Monday and my birthday is Wednesday. I have a couple of friends who are taking me out to dinner next week and my hubby has something up his sleeve but I am not sure what it is. I have already decided that I am not going to go overboard with my eating but I will not deprive myself of something if I want it. I have found myself lately not being able to eat half of what I used to and I think it is because I have my mindset to know that I am going to have to change my eating habits. I am going to go ahead and get my Protein shakes and try to start my liquid diet the week before my surgery.

Well, I just wanted to say Happy Saturday to everyone. Hope you all have a great weekend. Its supposed to be beautiful outside. :tt2:

Ebonie! You're doing great, girl!! I hope you have a wonderful anniversary and birthday!! This is a big month for you! :)

Sorry I've been MIA lately... been very overwhelmed with everything going on. I'm going to do the shake thing starting tomorrow. But I'm hoping to be able to eat a real meal each day for the weekend before my surgery at the scrapbooking retreat.

I just wanted to check in with y'all. I'll see Ebonie on Tuesday at our class. :) Yay!!

So.... I went to my preop with Dr. C. today and that went well. Then I braved the crazy traffic to head back to Hampton for support group. That was fun. There were a good amount of folks there. Ebonie, it was great to see you again.

Was anybody else from here at support group tonight?? Just checking... How's everybody doing?

I started my shakes on Monday and have lost 5 lbs as of this morning... I'm excited, but hungry, LOL. I'm looking forward to my mama's homemade biscuits on Saturday... it may very well be my last biscuit... I'm gonna enjoy it.

Bridgette - don't worry -- I know all the research say you won't be able to eat this and that -- well that is not true -- you will have opportunties to eat a biscuit again!

So -- please avoid the last meal syndrom.

EBONIE, You're getting so close . GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!!

Well, I have officially been banded. I went into surgery about 10:15 Monday morning and was home by 2:45p. I wasn't nervous until the morning of the surgery. I was almost in tears when my DH asked me what was wrong. He helped me relax and I was a little better. By the time I got to the hospital, I was ok. They couldn't get a blood pressure reading and the cuff kept popping off of my arm. They were finally able to get one and it was fine. My pulse was a little high about 110. It normally runs about 70-80. I remember everything until I got into the OR and they said take a couple of deep breaths into the mask. That was it for me. The next thing I remember is being in recovery and joking with the PACU nurse. He was really nice. That barium swallow for the x-ray was horrendous.:w00t:

I have been doing pretty well since I got home. Still suffering from some gas pains. They are no joke!!:w00t: I have been trying to walk constantly to help alleviate the pain. Today, the gas pains had subsided some but now, the abdominal pain has kicked in and the gas pains are coming back. sleeping is a chore. My favorite position (on my stomach) is completely out of the question. I have been sleeping on my right side but even lying in that position for 3-4 hours can be painful after a while. My living room sofa has been my friend.

I have been trying to make sure I get all my Protein and liquids in. Boy, it is hard. I have been sipping on an Atkins strawberry shake since 230 this afternoon and I still have about 45 more grams of protein left to get in for the day.

Well, I just wanted to let you all know how I was doing and thank you all for all of your kind words and support.

Ebonie, welcome to bandland!

Sounds like you're doing great and all is normal. Don't over do it, just keep walking. Way back when I had my surgery, it was an over nighter, I had surgery on Monday, home on Tuesday, drove to the store on Wed. Keep up the good work and enjoy your new "friend".

Hugs

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
