Recommended Posts

I have not set everything up on this site yet (will need my son's help to customize it and put a picture out there) but I just turned 50 on the 15th and I have complete all but one of my clearances I am trying to get an appointment with the nutritional then I will be able to submit the final package to Peachtree Bariatrics so they can submit to my insurance. I am getting very excited. I really love this site and once I get educated on how everything works I will be more involved. I am so encouraged by everyones testimony this is just GREAT!!!

Medicare?? I have Medicare coverage because of end stage renal disease, I had a transplant in April of 2006. Medicare does cover but I was wondering what exactly "cover" means. Will there be uncovered expenses? I am still in my six month medical supervision, hope to be banded before the end of the year. I wish it were tomorrow!! I would appreciate any responses regarding experiences with Medicare. Thanks! This site is great!! :P

"The wait is a blessing if you allow it to be" -- words of wisdom. Thank you, Orea. One question - what is smartbandster?

Smartbandsters is a Yahoogroups mailing list. You can find it at groups.yahoo.com. In my book it is the best place to learn what to expect and how to do things "right." For example, when I woke up in recovery, in pain, and wondered what the hell I had done to myself, I was able to smile and know I was right on schedule! :P

People on this list are successful at getting to their goal weights. I figure if you want to be successful, hang out with the ones who are! And emulate them.

It's a high volume list, so I get the digests, but it is informative, and fun, and very supportive once you make yourself known there. This is where I've gotten the mottos I repeat here, like, "If hunger isn't the problem, food isn't the answer," and "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." And my favorite, "Are you trading what you really want, for what you want right now?"

No experience with Medicare here, and I know we have a few here that have it, but you might also want to post your question in the 60, 70, 80 board as there might be more there. Good luck to you!!

Cher, my coverage is with medicare. Your coverage and requirements may be different from mine - mine is just 'cause I'm old (over 65) (that's a ha-ha, because the 60's are the new 40's, right?:biggrin2:), and yours is because of end-stage renal disease - I don't know if there is a difference in our coverages. I suggest you ask questions at the facility where you are having your surgery. They should be able to tell you about the charges and coverages. Several people on the 60's thread have been banded (not me, yet) and covered by Medicare. Their experiences might also be helpful to you.

Good luck on your journey.

At the bottom of the page you will see the thread train that got you to this "fifties" thread. Click on "Age Specific Lap-Band Support Groups (NEW!)" and look for the "sixties" thread... They are a good, supportive bunch, and the first age-specific group I went to. I have since enjoyed this fifties thread and they are nice enough to allow me to stay in spite of my advanced age...

Thanks, chics

Well finally the day is almost here. As I have said before I don't think that I am as nervous about the actual surgery as I am about the "afterwards".

I am just looking for some wonderful advice from you guys who have done such a wonderful job getting through this on the first week or so after surgery! What is the best "foods" to have on hand when I get home. I have already stocked the Vitamins, Calcium, etc., but worried about what to drink. At that stage of the game what have you all found to be the best to get you through the day. I see a lot of people talk about Unjury - I have been on the website but it's too late to order it now it won't get here before Monday. I'm getting apprehensive about this part - Help Please

thanks

Sandi--follow your doc's orders. I had to have Clear Liquids for 2 weeks. broth, Crystal Light, SF Jello, SF Popsicles, Tea, Water, Light Apple juice. Remember, this is the time to heal--don't worry about weight. Just keep that stomach "quiet" (no digesting) so the band can set. It will be hard, but the pay off is worth it! People who cheat ARE hurting their bands and courting the possibility of future slippage.

I am 3 months out, followed all doc's rules and am 51 lbs less. It's sooo worth it. Sending good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

Sandi, in the first few days post op when I was on clear liquids I had to sip 1 oz. every 15 min. that I was awake. And one of those times every hour it had to be Protein. I used the Isopure Protein Drinks. Some folks hate them and called them Isopuke, I didnt' mind them as much as I did the shakes later when I could have full liquids. The apple was my favorite. They are available at GNC, also protein bullets, they are 3 oz tubes and I broke those into 3 individual sips, they had 42 gms of protein per tube so even at 1 oz you got quite a bit of protein. I also had broth. Then after the first 5-7 days I could add in 5 preselected foods by the hospital which were: scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, pudding, yogurt and refried Beans. I hate cottage cheese but rotated those other 4 a lot. That was for 2weeks, at 3 weeks I got solids. Every dr. is different though so follow your's instructions. Also on clear liquids I could have Jello and s/f popsicles. Hope that helps. I was lucky and had very little pain, my dr. said he sucked out most of the gas, the gas is what gives most folks pain. So I'd ask if he tries to get rid of the gas before closing you up. I came home from the hospital with an abundance of little paper hospital cups those helped so much in measuring out my ounces. Good luck, when is the day??

Thanks everyone - I will make sure I have some of those things in the house - my date is Monday August 25. About how long does the surgery take do you remember? It seems to me they told us the prep work was almost as long as the surgery and total about hour-hour and a half. Does that measure up to what you experienced?

Morning Everyone!

Wanted to share a surprise i had yesterday. I've been trying to maintain at my present weight until i see my PCP to start a 3 month surpervised diet. Anyway, I measured yesterday and I've lost a total 10.5 inches overall since 6/30. I was so surprised! I haven't been feeling like i was making any progress, just sort of stalled! It has given me the boost to make it thru these next 2 weeks without giving up completely and packing on a few lbs.

Thanks for listening! Pat

Hi Sandi, when I had my surg. Dr also put me on Clear Liquids. I drank alot of chicken and beef boulion or broth, Special K2O Water mix (has 5 gr of Protein in ea indiv packet and only 6 g carb, and 5 g Fiber. helped me out alot. Also at Walmart you can get the generic powder drinks with no carbs, or cals. but they have no protein. SF popcycles and SF Jello was also good to have around. You will be fine, and you will find that the anticipation is much worse than the surgery. Good Luck to you.

Linda I am almost 3 mos post op and down 37 lbs.

Sandi - you will be in my prayers for a safe surgery & speedy recovery..

What are your doc's instructions for eating after surgery?? They all are so diff..

So my suggestion is if you are to be on clear liquids or full make your own Soups this weekend - Homemade chick broth is so much better than the canned stuff and so is creamed soups... That's what I did. Make sure you have your protien powder or clear Protein drinks on hand

Sandi surgery time is diff for everyone - I had a bit of scar tissue from a previous gall bladder surgery - pre-op was 14 vials of blood and that was it.. I had to spend the night in the hospital which I am glad I had to cuz they have great pain meds - and yes it does hurt - I won't tell you that it doesn't - I woke up and said "what the hell have I done" but the next pain shot took that thought out of my head... Each day after surgery got better and better - back to work day 6 - so felt I did really well.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
