I did a lot of walking from a couple weeks after surgery until I was down to about 100 pounds overweight. By then I was walking 6-8 miles 3 days a week, along with non-planned outings.

At about 100 pounds overweight I challenged myself to complete a C25K (Couch to 5K) program that gets you running 5k in 30 minutes in a month. Having completed this, I continued running, increasing distance until I was up to about 90 miles a week. I ultimately ran 5 marathons.

Of the two, I enjoyed running more. I did my running first thing in the mornings, when I could contemplate the day and listen to audio books. Very enjoyable stuff.

Walking and running burns about the same number of calories per mile.

I would recommend doing what you enjoy and can sustain. It's hard to sustain something you dislike.

Good luck,

Tek

I'm a fan of under the desk ellipticals or cycles. It keeps me mobile all day even when I have to work at the desk. I have bad knees and there's no strain on my knees using those either.

i prefer running cuz its faster, ha!

takes me 25-30 mins to run the same distance as walking for 45-50 mins. not sure if i burn the same amount of calories though, as it depends on what my sustained heart rate is when doing either one.

HI everyone, i would like to know what you guys prefer as a form of exercise? walking or running ? and why ?

I walk. A family friend, who just happens to be a world renowned orthopedic surgeon told me years ago "whatever you do for exercise don't run." He stated that its horrible for your joints (after all its how he makes his money) and for health benefits walking is better over all. He said the calorie burn isn't that much higher running and if you walk at a quick pace you receive the same benefits without the wear and tear and your body will thank you when you're older.

So, its what I do!

I can't run with my crappy joints - so walking. I also like biking and Water aerobics.

Walking as I was told it was better for my knees by two orthopedic surgeons as I no cartilage left in either knee and will likely need replacing in years to come.

I did a bit of long distance running many years ago in school and enjoyed it but that was it, never went further with it. A few years ago in an effort to improve my fitness and health I joined a running group which helped you learn to run, a bit like the couch 2 5k, but I didn't really enjoy it and felt it didn't really cater to those who weren't already super thin and fit.

I now like to walk but usually I have to mentally to have a purpose to it, like yesterday 20 minutes around the block to go post a letter, earlier this week I spent four days in hospital so during the days I walked the corridors and stairs (an hour each day in total) to not go out of my mind with boredom. Even a walk around town and the shops I turn into a speed walk.

I also do aqua aerobics once a week and recommend something like that if you have access to a pool and such classes.

I go on hikes with my son and I LOVE my treadmill. I go to incline 15 and speed 3.0, so fast walking basically up a steep hill on the treadmill. I also do the exercise bike up to resistance 16, I do weight training for my arms, and core/strength training. But cardio is my favorite.

since we are talking about other exercise besides running and walking...want to chime in here that my current flavour du jour of exercise: REFORMER PILATES....kinda like yoga on steroids.

i tend to go through phases of exercise types, and have tried countless forms of exercise to see what i like and they all come and go (hot yoga, regular yoga, aerial yoga, zumba, rock climbing, salsa, tap, pole dancing, kick boxing, cross fit, swimming, etc, etc). but so far running is the only thing that i have been able to keep an interest in this whole time is running (about 5 years now...)

but methinks reformer pilates will make the long haul HALL of FAME for me (along with running), but it does tend to get expensive (running is FREE! lol). i've been doing reformer pilates 2-3 times a week now for the past 5 months and the interest has been sustained...well see!

long story short, find something YOU enjoy doing, because that is the thing YOU will most likely keep doing long term.

good luck! ❤️

p.s. i also do weight training twice a week...but RELUCTANTLY because i HATE it. i'll keep doing this until i can't (or won't lol) because i know its good for me. luckily my Mr. hounds me to do it every week, so that helps i guess 🤷🏻‍♀️ (but i still hate it!)

I wish I could still run, but my joints are too far gone for it anymore. I love walking with a weighted backpack (to get my heart rate up enough). I love the rowing machine and indoor bike with audio books or online classes for continuing education (teachers are always learning). I hike and canoe and play field games all summer at the day camp I work at. I’ve been lifting weights for 20+ years, but to be honest it’s to keep up with the 20 yr old coworkers lol. I’m thinking of getting into ping pong because I see people of all ages competing and staying active and social with it. I’ve gone through dancing and yoga phases. I like to be curious and try new things. Like others have said, you really have to enjoy what you’re doing to make it your “thing.”

I walk a lot and run a little.

When I was younger and fitter I was a long distance runner. I now dally with 2-3 mile runs once or twice a week just to prove that I still can.

Walking is the workhorse of my exercise regime though. Less chance of injury and totally sustainable for at least the next few years (I hope).

umm....5k runs twice a week is not "a little"!

you are a runner even though you may not think it lol.

you may not be running 10k most days like my mr. and his insane group of friends, but your runs def put u on the runner half of the general population ;)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
