Pre op diet weight loss

Recommended Posts

I am pre op and will be starting my pre op diet officially in September. (3 weeks with 50 carb limit a day)

Just curious about how much, if any, people lost during their pre op diet - and what their plan entailed….

(As of today 8/10/222, i have already lost 61 lbs from my highest weight last year just through changing my lifestyle and dealing with my binging and emotional eating - am excited for every ounce lost that gains my ability to actually live life)

I had a 2 week long liquid only pre-op diet. I lost 9lbs, for a total of 20lbs pre-op. The most immediate goal of the pre-op diet is to reduce your liver size to make for a safe operation, but it sure is nice to see that number go down! Sounds like you're doing a great job!

I lost about 19 pounds on the pre-op diet. I did it for a little longer than I had to because I was so eager to lose.

They put me on a 10 day clear liquid diet. White grape juice, apple juice, cranberry juice, pulp free lemonade, fat-free low sodium broth, coffee, tea, popsicles, Gelatin. I lost like 10 lbs. or something like that.

It.

Was.

Miserable.

lol

I had an unusual pre op diet for 3 weeks. It was 40 ounces of skimmed milk, a non fat yogurt and as many non carby veg as I wanted. I lost 15lbs but oh boy was I glad when it ended. So was my husband, I had horrendous wind

Congratulations on your loss and getting a head start on those changes! That will certain help when you get back to a regular diet!

I’m on day 3 of my 8 day liquid diet … (3 Protein Shakes a day, 24 oz 100% fruit juice [no sugar added] & a minimum of 64 oz of Water. I can also have unlimited sugar free Jello, popsicles, broth/bouillon or zero electrolyte drinks that count towards my Water goal). So far I have had broth every day, it helps cut the sweet of the juice and Protein shakes, but I haven’t felt hungry or the need for more… yet. (The high Protein diet is only 7 days, day 8 is all Clear Liquids - 60 oz of juice, 64 oz or more of water, plus I can have unlimited amounts of broth/boullion, sugar free popcicles, “zero” electrolight drinks, low calories water flavor aids… nothing red though).

As of this morning I have lost 10 pounds on my liquid diet (I have a lot to loose) - which brings me to 62 pounds lost so far since June 2021 (my highest weight).

July 2021 was my highest weight… so It looks like we are on similar paths :) I got a lot to loose in order to gain my life fully back. I hope to loose around 200 lbs with the surgery if I can keep the positive lifestyle changes (and actually start exercising)

I am 1 week into my pre-op, I have lost just over 10 lbs. I do about 3 low carb/sugar, High Protein Shakes a day. About a half cup of either cottage cheese or scrambled eggs, 64-100 oz. Water, and occasionally chicken broth. if I want a snack I have a sugar free ice pop or Jello. I also drink a big (32 oz.) coffee every day. I have one more week, I am trying to hit another 10 lost.

It does sound like we are on similar paths! My highest was 382, I just hit 320 today. I'd love to have your height - lol... I am 5'3 (lost an inch somewhere used to be 5'4" lol). I don't have a formal goal weight - but I am taking one goal at a time. In high school (many many MANY years ago...) my body liked to float around 145-160 while I was playing sports and lifting weights. 2 kids and 30 yrs later, I am not sure how realistic my "ideal body weight" is as a goal (being I am not sure i ever saw that as a teen/adult...) but I will be happy with healthy and landing anywhere in onederland! Im eager to be more active and maybe even enjoy exercising again!

I look forward to seeing your progress and cheering on those mini goals as we go forward!

That's amazing - you will be so pleased you did this when you get to the other end of your weight loss journey and those 61lbs aren't still ahead of you!

I stayed on my 800 calories, any way, pre-op diet (give or take) for 2 months because my surgery was cancelled first time round. I lost 25lbs in those 2 months and I am so glad I did even though it was tough at the time.

Best of luck - I bet you cannot wait.

My program requires six monthly meetings with the dietitian, four of which have to be in-person because they need to weigh me. Ugh! I'm in month 3 and haven't lost ANY weight yet because I've been eating up all the "bad stuff" in my cupboards and freezer (pot pies, frozen burritos, frozen meatballs, Pasta, and many freezer bags filled with prepared meals. And lots of cereals too. I think I have 7 boxes of Special K Red Berries.) I went this route because it's very easy for me to lose weight, and I know that I can quickly drop the 12 pounds (220 to 208) the dietitian requires me to in order move forward with scheduling my surgery and beginning the two-week liquid diet. My February visit showed I had actually gained weight, up to 223, and I felt really embarrassed in front of my dietitian. I promised her I would lose at least 5 pounds before my next visit, which is coming up one week from today. So, starting yesterday, I abandoned all my cupboard and freezer food and have been crash-dieting (broth, fruit, a little lean chicken) just like in days of old. I figure after the 8 days, I'll step on that scale in front of her and we'll see at most 115 and I'll be in her good graces again. Then I can be a bad girl and keep working my way through the unhealthy stuff for 3 weeks, then crash diet again for my weigh-in. Yeah, I feel guilty doing this, and I know my dietitian wouldn't like it, but here in the forum I know I can be totally honest. You are my people! And I know you understand. It's important to point out, I live alone, which explains why I can't simply have others eat that food. Another main reason is that I'm a penny-pincher, and just won't throw it out UNTIL I'm in the final two weeks pre-op. That's the deadline. I have to toss it at that point because I absolutely do not want it around post-op!

On the positive side, my progress so far includes: cutting my coffee from regular to half Decaf, mastering eating slowly, not buying any more "naughty" foods, exercising 30 minutes every day, drinking at least 64 ozs of Water every day, recording my starting body measurements (shocking!), and reading tons of threads in this forum.

Good luck to all of you.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
