August Surgery Buddies!

Recommended Posts

My bypass is scheduled for August 3rd. I'm nervous and have a LOT of changes to make before then. I need to quit vaping, and on the 20th, I need to start my diet changes. It's taking a lot for me to not keep thinking I should eat XYZ because I won't get to have it again. On the flip side, I think my brain is already getting engaged because I'm finding myself turning down sugar and not finishing everything on my plate.

Good for you! I've ordered my bariatric Vitamins, pre-surgery drinks, Protein Powder and drinks. I'm getting nervous, too. I'll probably be second-guessing myself up to the last minute!

I have found that the actual preparation is helping me to relax, like I've got more control of the situation. It's helping to reduce the anxiety considerably :D

That's fantastic that your brain is already making those switches for you. I know personally, I need time to make adjustments from old habits. I have been using the "Fabulous" App to help me make those changes gradually. My prep diet is seriously helping me focus and take the brain work out of it. I don't even want to think about what I'm going to do/eat after surgery - I just want it all planned out with various choices of what I can have already made. I vape about three puffs of cannabis at night to help me sleep. My surgeon didn't want me on NSAIDS any longer and he was totally and completely supportive of the cannabis. It really helps without any sleepy hangover in the morning.

Hello Everyone! My surgery date is August 9th. I had my first consult in November 2021 and my insurance needed 6 months of visits and those didn't start until the end of January! I am so ready! I'll be doing one week of Optifast. I am a teacher so I'm working so hard getting everything in my labs prepared because I'll be taking off two weeks and coming back to work right at the end of the two weeks. That is what makes me the most nervous...going back to work too soon.

The vaping thing is proving harder than I thought. I made it from 10am to 4pm today, and two hours of that was a nap. This is going to be tough. I'm going to leave it in the living room tonight when I go to bed. My meal plan for the 20th-25th is going to need some adapting - it's very meaty and I don't eat meat (just fish, eggs, dairy and veg). They said that was fine, but it's requiring a little more legwork from me. I'm thinking of making a little website for pescatarian bariatric patients, because there is NOT a lot out there. Especially because I have some food allergies, and it is a bear trying to find smoothies that don't have banana or avocado in them! I need to get it all planned out ahead or I'm going to struggle. I don't use cannabis at this time, but I'm glad your doc found something that worked for you!

Two days before me! My liquid is only three days - two liquid, one clear liquid (day before surgery). They have me on semi-solids for five days before that and a low-cal/carb diet from the 20-25th. I almost wish it was just liquid - it would make me have to think less. I wish I could fast forward to my date so I wouldn't have to do these next two weeks! But, it will all be worthwhile. Are you in the states? Are you staying in the states or going abroad for surgery? Mine is in Tijuana.

I’ve had quite a journey already and I haven’t had surgery yet! I was suppose to have surgery in November. Then covid shut surgeries down at my hospital. I didn’t get another date until June 8th. That was rescheduled for June 22nd. So, the night before my surgery on June 21st the hospital called me at 10:16 at night to say that my surgery was canceled due to my surgeon getting covid! So, my new date is August 10th. Phew! My very first doctor appointment was June 3rd of LAST year! Haha! I’m having gastric bypass with hiatal hernia repair.

Hopefully this date sticks. The waiting must be horrible!

Congratulations!
I’m 3 weeks out from bypass and I feel like a new person! You will not regret doing this. It is the best thing I have ever done for me!
I’ve lost 30 lbs, and I feel amazing! I had NO pain post op. No gas, no pain, I never needed pain meds, and I am not hungry. I could not be happier!
You are almost there! Yay, you!!!
I also had 2 months of pre-op testing for insurance and 2 weeks while they review everything. My insurance picked up 97% of the bill which was $70,000. It was ALL worth it!

Thank you for your encouraging words. It sounds like you’re recovery is textbook fantastic!

My RNY surgery is scheduled for August 1. I start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow (July 18).

I have all my supplies for the next 2 weeks and the first week or so after surgery. Getting that sorted and clearing out a shelf in the kitchen for all that stuff made me feel more prepared and slightly more in control. I’m excited and a little nervous. I’ve been working through the pre-surgery required appointments since last Sept.

My surgery is about 2 hours away from home. So my family (spouse and 2 kids - both younger than 8 ) are going up the night before. We have a hotel for them to stay in for a couple of days before I get discharged from the hospital. They have been super supportive which I am grateful for.

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It sounds like you’re prepared and have a wonderful support system. I had a gastric sleeve done 18 months ago but am now getting ready to have a revision (gastric bypass) on August 8th due to severe GERD. I wish I would have just had the bypass instead! Going through the two weeks of liquid diet can be tough but just keep your eyes on the prize! Swanson sipping Bone Broth is great to have on hand before and after surgery since it has a lot of Protein. Remember to sip, sip, sip your Water constantly after your surgery and get your bariatric Vitamins ready (I take Barimelts.) I’ve rewatched a LOT of YouTube videos in preparation for my surgery; they’re very helpful and motivating. I know you’re going to do well! Be sure to keep us all updated! Best wishes!😁

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
