How long does it take after surgery for weight to start coming off? I gained some during surgery and it's slowly coming back off. Down to 222.2 today. What have you seen so far?

For my own sanity, I’m not going to weigh myself at all. I’ll find out on Monday at my post op appointment. Just so the numbers are going down over time, I don’t care about the day to day.

I went into surgery having lost 9 lbs during the preop liquid diet. Then two days after surgery I had gained back 7. but today I am 4 days post op and I am back down the original 9 and have lost 2 more. I am having a hard time with eating. Or drinking rather. I have no desire to drink my Protein Shakes and they make me nauseous, so I am basically drinking Water and eating sugar free Jello. Yesterday I tried some Soup and got about 4 oz down. I'm just going to keep trying. everything tastes thick and gross to me. I feel like I should be doing better than this. Are others experiencing a complete lack of desire for foods? Does everything you eat just not taste good?

I was a bit hungry during the liquid stage. All the Protein Shakes tasted horrible to me, but I liked the Soups and the thin oatmeal, although I was a bit sick of oatmeal after a whole week.

Now that I can eat pureed foods I have to say that the single scrambled egg I had this morning was absolutely delicious and the Tomato Soup I had for lunch was not bad. So, no, not everything tastes bad. However, I don't always know when I'm hungry.

Like today at lunch, I still felt too full from the egg, so I didn't have anything. I didn't get hungry in the afternoon, but I felt more and more nauseous and finally thought it might be a good idea to have some Soup, which did make me less nauseous.

The weight loss feel so slow for me. However, when I step back and think about it, it's a lot faster than I could lose on my own. I'm post op day 15 and I've lost 12 pounds since surgery.

You've lost 41 pounds in all. That is a lot. You're still losing, so you shouldn't feel bad.

Our bodies try to hold on to the weight, so the weight will come off in spurts and sometimes there will be stalls as well. The human body is complicated and I know how you feel.

I panicked on that one day post surgery when I gained weight, and when I was the same weight the day after as I'd been two days before, I wondered if I had stopped losing weight already, but then it started again. A good night's sleep is essential in weight loss, so you should try not to obsess over the numbers.

It is, and I'm not disregarding my overall weight loss. My post-surgery loss just has me discouraged at this point. 21 days in and I was hoping for more. The 2nd-week early stall was sooooo frustrating. I also compare myself hard by nature.

I am also taking a family trip to Disney World at the end of September, just hoping to be closer to that 200lb mark.

I am looking forward to having the ok from my doctor to start working out again, walking every day and not being able to really switch up my routine has me a little crazy.

I feel exactly the same way, most of the time. Like something is stuck in my chest. That is, when I don't feel nauseous, hungry or with heartburn. My stomach is this bloated, bruised and bloody mess.

I can't stomach the Protein Shakes and I'm not getting neatly the Protein I'm supposed to. I went home for lunch today and yesterday, because I couldn't eat anything in the cafeteria, and I really, really didn't want to go back to work in the afternoon. But I did, because I had to.

On the plus side, I'm getting enough liquids or close to what I'm supposed to, and I'm tolerating Tomato Soup and very thin oatmeal reasonably well. So that's something.

I feel this too. Yesterday was one week post op for me. I am so sad and depressed about eating Tomato Soup for every meal except grits in the morning. I start pureed diet tomorrow and I am not looking forward to that. I mentally cannot eat baby food and honestly I cant eat Tomato Soup for another meal.

anyone have advice on that?

I lost 11 pounds during my pre-op diet.

Gained 7 back after surgery. I knew this was fluids, Water and swelling but it still sucked to see the number go up.

After I got home from the hospital I've lost weight every single day (except today!) so I'm down a total of 21.4 pounds (9.7 of it post-op).

Same here! I am very rarely physically hungry (mentally, that's different!) and when I do eat things they are either: too sweet or just gross. I have to set timers to remind myself to eat otherwise I'd go all day without eating anything. The only things actually taste good to me are (all pureed): egg salad, the ricotta bake, runny sunnyside up eggs and Fairlife shakes. Yogurts and puddings all taste too sweet right now.

It’s 2 a.m. and can’t sleep. I had unexpected complications with BP (top number over 200 in post-op) and 15 hours later it’s in the safe zone but being controlled by medicine. Pain has been unusual, too. I got up and walked in place with a walker a half hour ago for the first time. I have on calf squeezers and they gave me a blood thinner. Tomorrow more ambulation. Scared about handling 2 flights of stairs in ny townhome today or tomorrow (depending how the day goes).

Surgeon said he was pleased with the operation. I had robots and 4 incisions.

Pictured is my bari-moose.

How are you feeling? Better I hope.

I’m going to have to be in the hospital a 2nd night because of the BP, which puts me in the 1% here at Sharp who need that post-sleeve. It was over 200 yesterday… today medicated in the 150s. Pain was also high yesterday but manageable today. I’ve been getting up and walking every half hour at most. Getting up and down are the hardest parts. They transitioned me off IV BP meds and onto oral meds recently in anticipation of going home tomorrow.

Mostly I’m worried how I’ll handle the 2 flights of stairs in my townhome tomorrow.

My daughter (almost 18) is home taking care of the dog.

Ask your team for nausea meds. The one's that melt under your tongue! That is the one thing that has helped me the most. I hope you get to feeling better soon 😊

I'm curious about everyone's response to this as well.

I lost about 9 lbs the first week.

0 in the 2nd week. 3lbs in the 3rd week and just began my 4th.

I was laying in bed super discouraged & couldn't fall asleep because I was running through everything I've consumed and my physical activity in the last 3 weeks and just feel like I should be further along.

I know mentally we're not supposed to compare ourselves to others because we each have unique circumstances and physiology. But it can be frustrating when you hear how others seem to immediately melt away their pounds.

Aww. I’m sorry to hear that. It will get better. Fingers crossed for a good day tomorrow

I was weighed pre surgery on August 5th, and I was 110 kg or 242 pounds. I had lost three kilos or 6.6 pounds before surgery. I weighed myself again the day after surgery, and I was still 110 kilos.

The day after that I was 109 kilos, down 2.2 pounds, and the next two days 108,1 and 107.7. So I started losing weight on day two after surgery, and since then I've lost weight every day except for day 7 after surgery when I gained 0.4 kilos (almost a pound) and on day 8th I weighed the same as on day 6.

Other than that, I've lost weight every day and today I've lost a little more than 7 kilos after the surgery, ten kilos in all or 22 pounds.

That sounds like a strong and healthy rate of loss. Supposedly if we eat a Soup with lots of sodium that an really impact the Water weight we see. I'm thinking of not weighing myself every day because I'll mentally torture myself. I want to focus on how strong do I feel today? Can I sit up better today? What can I do today that was a challenge yesterday? 😊

Exactly! I totally agree. Hows the saying go "we're all in the same storm different boats" or something like that. Doesn't mean I'm not side eyeing those other boats 👀😂

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
