August surgery buddies!

Drinking Water all the time is fine, but sometimes I miss other drinks. I especially miss soda and juices.

I remember some people in one of the forums (maybe this one?) mentioning Crystal light. I looked into it, and Crystal Light is sold in one store here that I know of, in another town 10-15 minutes away.

Is it really good? Good enough to make a special trip for? According to their website, this store has Pink grapefruit, OTG lemonade, strawberry, raspberry lemonade, lemon ice tea, peach tea and raspberry ice. Any of these any good?

This is a store that sells exclusively American brands. Are there any other American foodstuffs that you can think of that might be helpful as a part of a post surgery diet?

That's a great result. I've lost 23 and a half pounds since August 9th, so that's pretty good. Congrats!

I can't wait to go under 100 kilos (220 pounds), but that may not happen until next week.

so, as of now, i am not taking any Vitamin supplements whatsoever, and i'm 10 days post op.

my surgeon says that 4 weeks after the surgery, i'll have to do a blood test to see what i'm lacking then to suplement it.

i have no issue with that, it's very rational imo, but i've never heard it be done that way in forums or YouTube videos. everyone just talks about how important it is to take the supplements, yet here am i not taking a single pill, and i'm doing well.

is anyone experiencing / has experienced this same protocol?

Good morning from sunny SoCal! I'm now 4 days post-op. Yesterday was the first day the surgeon wanted me on 'cloudy liquids' (pureed Soups + Protein supplements), and I did really well with that. I measured out the Soup and shakes and made them last almost a half hour. The Baritastic app says I got 61g of protein (close to target... very good for a first day on shakes though, eh?) and 483 calories.

Movement was really good as well. I have a repeating timer that goes off every 30m to remind me to get up and move for a couple mins. Doesn't feel like much at the time, but by the end of the day, 4m/h times 16h is just over an hour of total movement. I feel good when I do it. One day when I lose more weight and my knee and back pain go down, I'll be able to go on significant walks again, but baby steps.

My low weight of the year was 369.9 the morning before surgery, and I've been in the 370s since then because I'm puffy and gassy still, but I trust I'll see the 360s again soon.

So many Vitamins and new BP meds to coordinate that I ordered a cute pill organizer from Amazon that will be here next week. Right now they bottles are all in a single bag, so it's a lot of rifling through to find things.

If I remember correctly, I wasn’t supposed to take supplements until after my first post-op appointment. Then I just started taking them regularly. I take BariMelts. Multivitamin with Iron, Biotin, Calcium, and Probiotic. My regular Vitamins (pills) are additional iron (I needed it according to my bloodwork), B12 , and D3. My bloodwork has been excellent since my VSG 18 months ago. I’m getting ready to have a revision from VSG to RNY so some my routine may change. I read a lot and watched YouTube videos about Vitamin supplements so they were very helpful. To be honest, it can’t hurt to take Water soluble vitamins. It’s the fat soluble vitamins that you have to be careful not to overdo. That’s where your bloodwork will be extra helpful. 😁

Ugh … it’s VERY warm here and I was working in a room without ac, so I’ve been pushing Water. I stopped to eat and wasn’t thinking and took a drink! That didn’t feel great. It wasn’t a lot but enough to not sit well.

I’m patient trying to wait and hope that it will settle, hoping it wasn’t enough to flush my stomach.

That’s a mistake I won’t soon make again (I hope).

Oh my goodness I was watching some TV and drinking a Protein Shake and I definitely over did it. Too much, too fast. It was soooo painful. And I think I experienced my first instance of dumping. I’m telling you guys my entire system rejected that shake. I really hope that never ever happens again!

Oh no! That doesn’t sound comfortable either! Now I’m watching the clock waiting for time to pass so I can drink again.

Sounds terrible! I wasn't looking at the time and ate a little too close together last night, and that was very uncomfortable for an hour but not outright painful, but like you, I'm making sure it doesn't happen again by making a note of the time every time I eat today.

Now I see why they are telling me to eat at the table with no distractions. It's too easy to overeat or drink watching TV or playing games. Part of relearning, I guess.

I feel like there's quite the learning curve to this. I definitely can't get away with things that were so easy before. Here's to hoping we'll all adapt soon! :)

A similar thing happened to me the other night while eating pureed food and watching the news. All of a sudden I felt I had eaten too much, I felt nauseous and I had to run to the bathroom and throw up. I had a measured portion, and I wasn't close to finished, so it may just have been a case of eating too fast. We really have to be careful when we eat and drink, it seems.

I made it guys! Sleeved on 8/25, felt icky in the recovery room, but luckily no major nausea since. I stayed overnight and was released last night. Very sore and it’s been a challenge drinking. Now cleared to do Protein Shakes along with other clear stuff. Up 4 lbs from surgery weight, but chalking it up to Fluid retention. Definitely not as bad as I expected. Hope everyone is doing well!

Congratulations! I'm 1 week out from surgery and still struggling to get Protein. These darn Protein Shakes I loved so much make me gag now.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
