Protein intake day 4 question

Recommended Posts

Good morning, I had my surgery on the 28th and I was released today for Protein Shakes. I have the premiere Protein and I was able to drink the full 11 oz. Is this bad? I thought I shouldn’t be able to do that much this early on. I had read that 4-6 oz should be the goal but I was drinking until I “felt full” since I have yet to feel this feeling.I was also told it takes most people 1-2 hours to down one of those shakes, I did mine in about 5 mins. My gastric coordinator said if I drink to much Water or shake or anything that I will have a certain feeling in my chest. I think my next Shake I will just measure out 5 oz and drink that. But should I be worried that it’s too much?

Not to worry. But try to pace yourself and not gulp or guzzle and just sip and maybe take the 11 oz over a 30 minute period.

I was able to drink the whole shake pretty quick after surgery too. I have been able to consume more at every stage than I expected to. I just try to measure things and only eat what I am expected to be eating. liquid passes through pretty quickly though.

I think even if you can, does not mean you should. Pace yourself. Fluids go down much easier, you will not feel your true restriction until you move to solids.

I've been worried because I never have that full feeling. Even after 1/2 cup chicken salad. Or a Protein Drink.

Fluids go through your body more quickly than solid foods. It’s why many don’t feel any sort of restriction until they are through the liquid, puree & often sift food stages. Plus nerve endings have been cut during surgery so your usual sensations of being full or having enough are different.

It’s not a matter of what you can do but what you should/need to do. Remember the staged diet is recommended for a purpose: to aid your healing & recovery. Remember all those internal sutures & staples holding your tummy together. Consider how you would protect a large external wound with multiple stitches like on your arm or leg. You need to do the same with your internal wound.

Go slowly. You have to change how you eat to take full advantage of this surgery. It takes time for a message to get thorough that you’ve had enough to eat (or drink). The goal is not to be full but to eat enough to satisfy your body’s needs. Like most of us this is very different to how we used to eat. This is when it starts.

All the best.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
