Sugar Free/fake sweeteners drinks

Now that I am almost 6 months post op, I decided to drink something other than just plain water. I tried Crystal Light, and it was disgusting! I tried 3 diff flavors, and just do not like the after taste. Then I decided to try diet ice tea by Snapple, and thought that was also nasty, and left an after taste. Hubby bought me some sugar free cocoa, and again it is gross, and leaves a weird after taste. Is this happening to anyone else? What is everyone drinking at this point? I am so sick of plain water.

I was a 2 liter or more a day diet coke drinker and I don't like coffee either. A few months before surgery I had stopped drinking Diet Coke it was so hard. But aspartame did alot of weird things t

to clarify, pre-surgery, I'd drink diet coke all day. Now, the few times I do, I only have a few sips at a time and usually let it go flat and take a long time with one can. I can't drink it like Water or Gatorade Zero, as the carbonation makes it uncomfortable.

You really don't have to defend your choices here, sounds like you're doing great bud ;)

Before my surgery, I hated drinking plain Water. I drank a ton of diet soda and flavored seltzer (Polar, La Croix, Bubly, etc.). When I drank water, I had to add Mio to it. Weirdly, after surgery, I started to like plain water. I still occasionally add Mio, but most of the time, I just drink plain water. I was also told not to drink carbonated beverages, and I've seen some bariatric patients say that they can, but I don't feel compelled to try, at least not at this point. There are mixed opinions on whether it stretches your pouch, but most people say that even if it doesn't stretch your pouch, it's uncomfortable.

I've developed a love for hot beverages after surgery. I drink at least one cup of tea every day. I prefer the fruit-flavored ones (especially apple). I like to add zero-calorie Syrup (DaVinci, Torani, Jordan's Skinny Syrup) to sweeten and flavor it. Apple tea + caramel syrup + hazelnut syrup is delicious! I also like chai tea + almond milk + vanilla syrup. Of course, these are artificially sweetened, so you may not like them, but it might be worth a try.

I am also a fellow coffee hater! I recently discovered an awesome product that I LOVE called Crio Bru. It's roasted cacao Beans that you brew like coffee. It doesn't taste like coffee (which I think is a good thing). I don't like it black, but it is absolutely delicious with a couple of ounces of flavored Protein Shake or some almond milk + zero-calorie syrup. My favorite combination is chocolate coconut Protein shake + caramel syrup -- sort of a liquid samoa. I'm kind of obsessed with Crio Bru and I highly recommend it. I bought a sampler from their web site, but you can buy a single bag on Amazon if you just want to try it. I bought a 5-pound bag when I finished the sampler pack!

Wow that sounds delish! I am going to try the chocolate coconut protein shake and caramel syrup. TY for the idea.

I was always a water a drinker but I do find it harder to drink now which is weird. It’s the gas in carbonated drinks that is the main concern post bariatric surgery. That and the possibility you’ll switch to the high sugar versions.

But with all things on this journey, you have to find what works for you. So if you want to have some soda all you can do is try it & see if it has any adverse affects. Your choice.

I gave up sodas years ago. Mainly as the gas gave me terrible hiccups. Never went down the ‘diet’ alternative route for the same reason & because they still feed your craving & desire for sweet. Now there’s info coming out that artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain - body tastes sweet but because there’s no calories to burn it holds on to whatever calories you have eaten. It gets you whichever way you turn!

Actually not drinking soda does limit your choices when you go out. I used to have to shrug & say guess I’ll have to have wine - lol!!

I have a large mug of green tea every day (400ml) & will pour myself a large glass (400ml) of sparkling water in the morning & let it sit so it goes flat: no gas but the minerally taste remains. I slowly sip on it through out the day in addition to still water. I used to buy a hi protein drinking yogurt which was yummy but a lot of stores don’t stock it anymore - sigh.

If I have a gin & tonic, maybe once a month, I stir it frequently to release some of the gas & sip it very slowly.

If you don’t like artificial sweeteners maybe go with natural? Adding fresh fruit to your water? They sell defuser water bottles on Amazon for like $10

It's on mine, after week 4.

I can't blv how diff everyone's plans are. It seems like my docs won't let me do anything at all. No soda, alcohol, fruit/veggie skin, no pasta, bread, rice, etc.

I know, and I applaud you for sticking to such a restrictive plan. But we really do have very different plans. It seems US doctors in general deal in absolutes, if you will, and European ones try another strategy. I mean, we're on 1,400 cals from the start, and you have to see if you can get UP to it. That's different from most US plans, too.

Wow 1400 calories! I am still not anywhere near there, and I am almost 6 months out. I am lucky if I can eat 600-700 per day. I am too full to eat more. I have to force myself to eat sometimes. I don't know if I will ever get to 1400? Maybe in a couple of yrs?

Well, the long-term studies sure indicate people have no problem getting there, so ... ;)

I am surprised to hear a few people saying they drink soda after this surgery. I was told NEVER!! I am too scared to even try it.
Im 7 months out and have drank some of my husband's coke here and there. I was told never to drink it either. I'm not encouraging you to break the rules. Cokes was never my thing though. I need to stop the iced coffees and redbulls again though[emoji5][emoji51] oh and I'm a sleever. Idk what group this is posted in because it doesn't show for me on mobile.

Some artificial sweeteners are hard for me to tolerate. I loved crystal light before surgery, but not it tastes so different. I just drink water and fairlife milk. I will sometimes do the Hawaiian Punch sugar free powder pouch thingy. I can tolerate those if I add more water than what the box says.

When I’ve had low blood sugar I’ve drank a Capri sun that’s as my kids...bad idea. It made me crave the bad stuff so bad, and made my tummy upset.

It’s off the list because 1 the calories & 2 the possible addiction switching. But it is a choice thing. I had a g&t at about month 2 or 3 at a cousin’s 40th. Sat on it for 3 hours. I only have an alcoholic drink maybe once a month or two & sip the one drink slowly. I don’t really enjoy it the same way.

Gatorade Zero and Protein 2.0 water.

I wish I drank/liked coffee. I never liked it. The coffee with caramel sounds good even though I wouldn't try it.

I was told that we can NEVER have soda again in our lifetime! My surgeons staff drilled it into my head a million times because I was addicted to diet coke. I had to wean myself off a few months before surgery. Drinking less, and less, until I was only drinking water. Approx. 2 weeks before surgery, I was down to the tiny cans, and couldn't even finish them. I didn't enjoy it the way I had in the past. I mean, I was drinking like a 2 liters a day. I think that this is where the dislike for fake sweeteners started?

I will have to see if I can find drinks with the Monk Fruit that you are talking about. I have never heard of this. Is this something new? Do you know of any good drinks to try with it?

It is my understanding that is for the bypassers only, not the sleevers.
