Curious... How long before you could eat your first piece of pizza?

Curious... How long before you could eat your first piece of pizza?

It seems as if each doctor has a different diet plan for before/after surgery.

For instance, my surgery was 1/29/2021. I am on 2 weeks liquids to include Protein Shakes, Protein Water, Water, Yogurt, Fat free/sugar free pudding and low fat ricotta.

then i go to 1 to 6 months of soft foods, to include ground meat, deli slices, non-fat cheeses, etc

then on to solids again.

My main thing is pizza. I just want to know realistically when I will be able to eat it again. I don't want any lectures on how i shouldn't. I'm only wanting one slice vs the 4 or 5 I used to eat. So spare me the anger.

No anger here. I think I first attempted pizza at about 4-5 months post op. I’ll still have half a slice from time to time. I’ve been delighted that I am completely satisfied after half a slice. Allowing this kind of “treat” from time to time has made this livable for me long term. I’ve met my first goal weight, so it hasn’t derailed my process overall. I think the key is just keeping these kind of foods (high carb/fat) an occasional thing rather than falling back in to old habits and having them daily.

About 6 months. I can eat one slice now at 2 years post-op but I really just stick to the toppings and no crust now.

It may be a while before you can eat the crust, but the toppings are the best part anyway! Try a ricotta bake for the pizza taste too. I think I ate the cheese off a slice of pizza around 2.5 months post op!

You NEED ricotta bake in your life! It’s the best thing you can eat in the soft food stage. I’m 6 months out and can eat normal foods, but ricotta bake is still one of my go-to meals. I eat it with turkey meat sauce and it’s basically lasagna sans noodles.

I split the recipe into 8 4-ounce glass bowls (I bake it in individual bowls instead of 1 big dish). It freezes well, so it’s super easy to grab a serving of ricotta bake and a serving of turkey meat sauce out of the freezer and stick them in the microwave.

Sounds like a plan! Couldn't you use super lean ground beef as well?

yes - ricotta bake. I ate that a lot when I craved pizza.

I think I first ate real pizza when I was about four months out - but I did NOT eat the crust - I just scraped the toppings off one or two pieces. I was probably a year or more out when I ate an actual piece (with the crust). Now at almost six years out, I can physically eat 1-2 actual pieces (with crust) (1-2 depending on the size of the pizza and how my pouch is that particular day. Some times I can only manage one...)

Yes, you could use ground beef. Some people don't tolerate beef very well after surgery, so turkey is a little safer. I found a turkey meat sauce recipe that I love and I don't miss the beef.

Regarding pizza... I am 6.5 months out and have not eaten real pizza since my surgery. Pizza is my kryptonite. Before surgery, I could not resist pizza. I ate a whole frozen pizza every week (Red Baron pizza, which is a bit smaller and lower in calories than, say, DiGiorno, but still, a whole pizza). Even when I was losing weight before surgery, on pizza day, I would fast the rest of the day just so I could eat that pizza. I cannot overstate how much I love(d) pizza.

In November (about 4 months after my surgery), I had a chicken crust pizza. I bought a frozen one (Foster Farms) and split it into 3 meals. It was ok, but not great, and I haven't bought it again. I've heard homemade chicken crust is better, so I'll try that someday. I do occasionally make myself a tortilla pizza using a Mr. Tortilla 1 net carb tortilla, 1/2 ounce marinara sauce, 1 ounce mozzarella cheese, and 5 pieces of turkey pepperoni. 133 calories and it kind of satisfies the pizza craving.

The good news is that I don't crave pizza nearly as much as I used to. Before surgery, looking at pizza, smelling pizza, seeing a pizza commercial, or even seeing characters on a TV show eating pizza would make me want pizza in my belly NOW. But I have found a lot of healthy recipes that I truly enjoy eating enough that I don't care about pizza as much anymore. I eat three meals per day and no Snacks, so I have to choose wisely what I'm eating for my three meals (and one of those meals is almost always reserved for a Built Bar), and there are plenty of things that I would rather eat. I know you don't want a lecture, but I suggest finding foods that are healthy and delicious, and you may find yourself not wanting pizza as much.

I had VSG on Dec 7th 2020. Starting at about 4- 5 weeks, I have twice eaten small, thin crust (gluten-free), mushroom, Tomato & spinach (any veggies would work) pizza. I take very small bites, chew very well & put the piece in eating down between bites. I've had absolutely no issues! I can eat 1/2 of one small piece (the pieces are already small bc it's a small pizza...I cut them in half). I tried eating a single piece of pepperoni from my hubby's pizza, but I could feel heartburn creeping up after a minute or twenty... Not doing that again...

I had pizza about 2 months after surgery, but I made it with Protein tortilla/wrap rather than regular crust. I could only eat a quarter to a third of it. Now one year out i can have two slices from a small pizza. These are great to make your own pizza with.1004-0001.thumb.jpg.94cacdf01dc60ca530b7bb091566776a.jpg

Nope. I am the fussiest fat guy you will ever meet. Not many foods that i like or WILL eat.

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
