Breads & the such

Recommended Posts

Hi, first I'd like to apologize for my last topic here about soda. I came on very strong based on perceived perception from threads on various forums from a decade ago and that wasn't far to you all. The responses were pretty awesome!

I am one week away from my 6 month mark since surgery. My surgery wounds have healed tremendously on my stomach and my IV marks are also almost completely dissolved. Throughout the months, I've tried small bits of things such as a burrito, a slice of pizza, and bread (for a hamburger). My body would immediately react and I would need to find somewhere to vomit even after one bite. Since then, I avoided them completely.

I recently celebrated my birthday and in the past week. I tried the above mentioned things. I fully tolerated third of a slice of pizza from Marco's Pizza without even burping! This morning I had a pre-packaged Breakfast burrito (210 calories) and again, I was surprisingly able to tolerate it! I didn't get to see my pops on my birthday so he took me to a burger joint tonight for a belated birthday dinner and I ordered the smallest hamburger deluxe with a small order of fries. Usually I'm able to eat the burger patty just fine, but the waitress didn't bring me a fork so I cautiously took a bite of the burger as a whole. I was able to eat half of it and a few fries with no problem! I've still been following the no drinks 30 before or after.

My question is, did I reach a new milestone in my healing process (so to speak)? Any advice would help :) I still had no desire to overeat these foods, but I'm still just shocked that I was able to eat them without any trouble!

I found that the farther out I got the more I could tolerate. The only thing I really can't tolerate any more is really high-fat meals (which isn't a bad thing to be intolerant of...)

im 11 months post op today. This weekend was the first time i had pizza. i handled it no problem. I still have had bread as far as on a burger or sandwich, but my plan is to stay off that as long as possible. I always figured if i can stay away from bread and sugar drinks then ill never regain. But overall foods have definitely gotten easier.

I hope you enjoyed the food? ;)

I think you two guys are perfect examples when it comes to the "never again" approach not working in most likely the majority of patients (come on, we all know the threads with the wagon or the track).

Sooner or later many (most?) patients will try to eat what is considered very often "forbidden food" in the WLS community but seen as "normal food" within the rest of their environment (e. g. pizza or burgers, bread). And guess what: most of the patients will tolerate these foods just fine. The "I can't have this because for sure it will make me sick"-protection just took a jump out the window to suicide itself. Oops.

These foods are tasty, easily available, highly palatable, not too expensive and it's just what most people around you eat at least occasionally and consider it a normal food to eat, regardless of them being overweight, underweight or of normal weight.

Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy these foods occasionally and in reasonable amounts instead of going into binge mode/loss-of-control-eating mode when it comes to these foods. Deprivation is a problem in the long run and WLS obviously doesn't fix the craving problem in the majority of cases, at least not long term.

I get what I refer to as the bread Tingle - my nerve endings tingle after eating a little bread. I generally avoid bread, mainly in favor of getting my Protein. I occasionally have a small piece of pizza, but don't eat the crust. I love turkey burgers, but I wrap them in lettuce and avoid the bun.

Everyone is different, and as long as I continue to lose weight and get all of my Water and protein in every day, a little bread once in a while won't be the end of me.

Thanks for the responses! Yes I am planning on having these foods once in a while and not a regular thing. I took the rest of my burger home to go and today I just ate the patty with no yearning from the bun. I've been doing a lot better on meeting or exceeding my Protein and fluids intake! The MyFitnessPal app has been a big help as well and noted that the aforementioned foods weren't very helpful with protein. I'm down 107 pounds since my pre-surgery diet and 83 since the surgery itself so I'm hoping to stick with what got me here!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
