I'm scheduled for March 12. My surgeon and I are still deciding between a Gastric Bypass or a Mini Gastric Bypass.

But one way or another - here I go!

Hi Bren, Welcome! Excited for you!! I’m scheduled for gastric bypass on 3/11. Curious, did your Dr. describe the difference between the bypass and mini bypass? Anythng you can share on it would be most helpful. Thanks!

Hi Lily66,

I am actually revising from a sleeve gastrectomy. He had said that he thought the gastric bypass (GB) was a great option for me, but he did mention that I might consider the mini gastric bypass (MGB) too. He didn't go into a lot a detail, but I have been doing quite a bit of research on my own. We will discuss it more next week when I go back for my appointment before the surgery date.

It looks like for many people the MGB is a great surgery choice with very similar results to the GB such as weight loss and resolving comorbidities. The nice thing about the MGB is that it requires less intestinal (stomach) rerouting and the time of surgery is much less. However, there is a higher incidence of bile reflux after the surgery.

I have a had quite a problem with acid reflux and they found on my recent upper GI scope that I have a severely inflamed esophagus. So I am leaning toward the gastric bypass which has been shown to take care of GERD completely.

Hope this helps anyone with questions.

Best of luck on your upcoming surgery on the 11th.

Bren

Thanks so much Bren, your explanation helped! Initially, I was adamant on having sleeve. Surgeon asked if I ever have acid reflux? I replied, Yes, rarely, but on occasion. He drew pictures explaining how and why reflux would likely be much worse following sleeve. I left his office rather let down, but after research and the experience of others here, I feel great peace in going with RNY. I want to go through this only once, if possible. Best wishes to you, and thanks again! -Lily

Thanks for explaining that. I'm having the full RGY because of acid reflux. I will be very glad to get rid of that.

Yup, I was the same way. The surgeon recommended RNY, but left the decision to me for that very reason. My reflux has been bad and was getting worse and when I read that the sleeve may aggravate the problem, it was then a no brainer for me.

Hey, is anyone else oscillating between being very excited to 'what the heck am I doing'? That's why I love coming on this site at times, although when I read about some other's complications, I get nervous again...

The nerves are finally settling in, this surgery is happening tomorrow. My surgeon's office just called to go over the guidelines for the 1 day liquid diet. Guess, I'll go have some Jello.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
