January 2020 Surgery Date

Recommended Posts

Hello!! I have just recently found this forum, and boy am I glad!! I'm having VSG on January 8 in Pennsylvania with Dr. Asad. I've also been on the pre op liquid diet since January 2, 4 Protein Shakes daily and lots of Water only... not fun but I'm getting through!! My starting weight in April was 270, I'm at 258 currently, and hope to make it eventually to my goal of 170 after surgery. Anyhow, it's very nice to get to meet people going through the same things that I am, can't wait to see all of our results!!

For those of you having surgery on Monday, I've been reading that your anxieties are into overdrive. Practice slow deep cleansing breaths and sleep in your most comfortable positions that you know you aren't going to be able to sleep in for awhile. Take a long relaxing bath (because we you are going to be relegated to showers for along while), go get a nice pedicure tomorrow (those include a foot massage), change your sheets and before you leave for the hospital make your bed up nice and pull the covers back (leave a gas-x instead of a mint on the pillow, lol), buy flowers for your room for yourself and a nice card with kind words reminding yourself why you are proud of you!!!! Make a basket of things you need and put it by your bed within your reach, lay comfy loose pajamas on your bed & put your slippers by your bed, put a fresh towel in your bathroom, change your toothbrush just because, get new batteries for your remote controls ( I assume we all will be watching lots of TV in between naps & walks in the house), get a new journal and pens to write, borrow some books and etc...

There's plenty of ideas above to keep you occupied until Monday and you can always pray or meditate, download the calm app or go on YouTube and find the Honest guys, I love the meditations offered :

This is my favorite one, they offer many. Stay busy pre-pampering yourself, because you deserve it.

Thank you for all of these ideas. I did let myself have a good “anxiety cry” this morning and it helped me to reset and put those big girl panties on.

You're welcome and know that you are not alone. I have a good anxiety cry when needed, better to release that energy.

Today, makes pending surgery more of a reality for me, this is the last time I'm babysitting my grandson before surgery. I need the next 3 weekends to finish preparing and organizing, prior to the 31st. I've been declining social engagements as far as into March, I never realized how much people Celebrate around libations and food. I'm going to focus on self- recovery, new lifestyle norms and exercise. This change is happening to me and not everyone else, but I get the anxiety and fear of the unknown. Some of my relationships may not survive...January 2021 may look very different from January 2020.

Hi everyone

I’m having a gastric bypass to day at 11am because of my reflux disease and hernia will be dealt with as well, I am over weight but I’m not the biggest I have been, but have not had much appetite for a long time due to reflux which is a good thing in a way as it has changed my relationship with food so it makes this journey easier. Hope everyone’s surgery goes well I’m in England

Thanks for the prep tips! 😀 I especially like the tip on changing your sheets before surgery, so your bed is nice and fresh when you get home. I have my Vitamins, Protein Shakes, and Jello, but still need to get broth, and I guess, GasX?? I plan to make some homemade broth before surgery and freeze it in ice trays, but I would also like to get some broth packets.

I'm having surgery in Puerto Vallarta during a family vacation and I'll be there for several days after the surgery. I've been stressing about what comfy clothes to pack for after surgery and for travel home and I found these dresses on Amazon. They are inexpensive, $18-$21 a dress, and I think they will be very comfortable, like wearing a nightgown! I already have 2 short sleeved t-shirt type dresses, so I think the 5 dresses, a sweater, a pair of Birks, and a pair of nice sandals will be my complete wardrobe for the trip. The only robe I have is a big, warm fluffy one, so I may try to find a lightweight wrap robe that will pack easy.

Any other tips?

Clean sheets are nice, but my surgeon and for previous surgeries it is recommended to minimize germs. I have to shower and wash with antibacterial soap, hibiclens, the night before and morning of and use clean towels after each shower. Hibiclens is what they use to wash their hands prior to surgery. They are trying to minimize the risk of infection from what I understand. I am doing whatever my surgeon recommends as they are the experts.

I was supposed to be on the 9th but the hospital had an issue with the operating rooms, so I am scheduled for the 10th.

Okay guys, I’m down to about 32 hours!! Let’s talk about hospital bags....what are you guys packing?

Also, day 6 of the liquid diet is down! I found a great Protein Shake that I really like. Tastes like chocolate milk, it’s not chalky or overly sweet. Core Life by Fairlife. I found it at Publix and Walmart.

Read the hospital bag thread, lots of great ideas. What are your essential items for your comfort?

Chapstick and my pillow probably. I just got a call from the hospital. I have to be there at 8am tomorrow. This time tomorrow I will be on the other side. OMG. Today is really the first day I’m hungry. It’s day 7 of the liquid diet, and day one of Clear Liquids. I’m hangry. I wish I knew how to quote/reply previous posts from this app!

Thank you so much! It still feels unreal. Like something will go wrong between now and then and it’ll get canceled. I’m a worry wart 🤷🏻‍♀️

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
