well from what im grasping in this post and a personal friend who has dealt with slippage...i basically need to immediately get an unfill anytime i feel like im getting sick or ill that promotes any kind of coughing, or heavy mucus like effects....b/c i know that when u have mucus and a lot of it tends to sit on top of the band and build up which causes the cough...so im gonna try to see if i become alert in time to forecast a sickness like food poisoning or the flu. Its lookin like the band not only needs to be deflated when pregnant to allow good nourishment for the baby but it needs to deflated during ill times to let our bodies fight off the illness allowing open passage ways to dispose or cough out mucus, etc.

when your band slips does it usually hurt? What are some other reasons your band will slip besides vomitting?

Some have no symptoms with a slip, they don't even know it until they get a fill under fluoro. Sometimes it's reflux, sometimes it's an inability to get food or Water down.

Several things can cause a slip, being too tight, vomiting, etc.

Followed my doc's orders explicitly (as I've posted before, i cheated on the preop diet and didn't get my band placed right away so I learned the hard way)

I'm at almost 11 months out and no issues at all. LOVE my band! no gerd, no nothing! :wink2:

Hey all... I am not sure I am in the right spot. I am sure you all will let me know! lol.. I am 1yr 4monts Post Op and I was recently diagonosed with a slipped band! My suregon wants to go in ASAP and replace it(I KNOW what caused it!) The request to have my insurance pay for it was denied. My BMI was too low!! DUH!! if it was too high they would deny it for not working! Anyway it was suggested to me by my doc's nurse that I go thru the ER and the insurance MIGHT pay for it. Has anone had this issue and if so any tips? advice?? does anyone have any ideas of how severe the slippage sympoms might be?? I already had all Fluid removed and I am at PRE op status! Ughh!!! HELP! NOT having it is not an option this soon after.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF THE BAND HAS SLIPPED?:frown:

You probably won't know. Your surgeon will run tests. But symptoms that I've read on here include either suddenly losing all restriction (and it doesn't come back) or conversely suddenly being unable to even swallow your own spit. But as you can see these are vague symptoms and can indicate other things too (a fill kicking in, a leak in your port or tubing, etc). Also often (but not always) present are pain with each bite of food, nausea, etc. GERD (persistent acid reflux) can also be a symptom..of a slip, or other issues!

THere is no set list of symptoms that positively indicates a slip.

From what I've read, the MAJOR cause is being too tight and overeating. And the percentage of slips is relatively low, about 5% or so, i think.

So take home from this is: do follow the diet given you by your doc, don't consistently overeat/pack your pouch, and if you have a sudden change or pain tell your surgeon.

My doc. said that since I had such bad acid reflux because of the slippage (Sleeping with 3 pillows) that the insurance would pay. Sure enough I got the OK to have it fixed on July 22. Make sure your doc specifies all of your complications. Good Luck to you!

I'm five years post surgery and have gone through four fills over that time. I've lost a total of about 80 pounds and was pretty satisfied with where I was and the amounts I was able to eat. I started experiencing band problems about three weeks ago. I was taking some antibiotics for chest congestion and a slight fever. Over a two week period, it seemed I wasn't able to eat my usual small portions, and even liquids were difficult to keep down. I'm now at the point that I can barely get any solid food to stay down. When I spoke with my surgeon over the phone he said it was likely a reaction to the antibiotic and that I should just stay on hot liquids for a while. Well it's been nearly two weeks and I've lost about 12 pounds but I am weak and can barely get around. Also, I've started getting leg cramps and have pain walking. I see the surgeon next week but may have to go to the emergency room if the pain and problems persist. Any suggestons?

Hi:

You should call your band doctor again and tell him that you need a slight unfill. My surgeon said that sometimes with a cold you can get a tight band because of the postnasal congestion. He said that he often unfills or loosens someone's band when they have a cold because they get too tight. Then, a week later when they feel better he fills them back to where they were. Any time you're having a problem keeping liquids down you need to push to get in to see your doctor.

I hope you feel better soon. Please keep us posted.

Sue

Hi again.

I forgot to say that with the leg cramps I usually have a half of a banana for a couple of days in a row and the leg cramps go away. Someone told me that leg cramps are a sign of a potassium deficiency and bananas have alot of potassium.

You need to go see a doc. If you are weak and have pain, you may have an electrolyte imbalance and trust me, that's more than a banana or two (or gatorade) can fix. You can mess with your heart, among other things. Two weeks is too long to go unable to eat, especially since you are more slim and don't have fat stores to call on. If you think you can wait, call your surgeon and/or Primary tomorrow ASAP. If not, go to the ER. Don't ever let yourself get so low just because a doc on the phone says "it's probably a reaction" ok? You need medical intervention now.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
