Tastebuds And Smell

Recommended Posts

Anyone having Issues with their smell and tastebuds. Smelling food right now makes me ucky and my tastebuds are totally off. Nothing tastes as it should which makes it very hard to eat my puree menu. I get down but it's struggle. Anyone else experience this?

My senses of smell and taste are also altered (I eben smell people and animals differently If it doesn't smell right i won't even bother to be near it

Is there anything on your plan that doesn't bother you? Try sticking to that.

Good Luck 💜

It’s common for the surgery to cause sensory changes and alter taste and smell. I don’t think anyone really knows why. It’s probably tied to gut hormones and the nervous system.

I remember reading 97% of people experiencing sensory change of one kind or another. But not always the same. Some people have heightened senses (ie things tasting overly sweet) altered senses or reduced. It’s probably seen as a tool to aid in weight loss.

For me personally i lost my ability to properly taste food, long before I had surgery. My sense of taste and smell reduced/altered. Which makes me think it is hormone and nervous system. It# hard to find anything palatable.

I cant say for certain but I’d think majority of patients find their senses normalize over time. Keep looking for things that you can tolerate the smell/taste of.

Everything for the next 6-12months while in deep losing mode should be eating to tolerate and fuel your body and losses. There will be time enough for living the rest of your life with appealing food that smells and tastes good to you. And yep, it's very common to experience this. I think it has to do with ketosis and the acetoacetoacetate that is a by-product of lipolysis (fat burning). It is a type of "vinegar" or weak acid and changes smell and taste. Drink lots of Water and it will help!!! Heal well!!

I cannot stand anything sweet now. Post-op I couldn't even have my Protein Shakes because they are all sweet.

But what a fantastic aversion to have! Pre-op I was an absolute sugar junkie so for me this is heaven-sent.

Oddly I am craving Pickle Juice and the juice pickled jalapenos are in. Which is exactly what I craved when pregnant LOL Now what is that about!? I am definitely not pregnant lol

That's funny because my cravings are dill pickles and olives. I can't explain it because I'm not pregnant either[emoji1] .

Yes I can’t stand the smell of warming up tortillas (family eating them, not me), raw onion. I use to love Jello or “jels” cups and now I can’t stand them and I have a few still from pre op.

Yeah I bought some sugar free pudding cups, don't know if it's the preservatives and what- not but might as well toss them in the. trash bin, because I can't stand how they taste. Made myself some low- cal rice pudding; found a recipe, did it MYSELF but forgot how rice fills and expands in my pouch, and 2 teaspoonful= Misery! Funny but tapioca doesn't have the same effect, should have cooked that up instead!

I’m Jelly, i wish I could lose 2lbs a day heck I’d even take 2lbs a week with what I’m eating. I tried something new which was a little more calories and just was pretty much in a crawl, then a stall then went backwards a little, once I dropped calories again it went down 2lbs. My metabolism is a joke.

i still have Jello cups from pre op. Can’t even use them, for colonoscopy prep. Wrong color. Not sure what I will do for clear for the prep. It’s a PITA to find things I can tolerate.

my taste changes baffle me sometimes. Years before I had the surgery I started losing my ability to properly taste food, i could tell salty, sweet, sour only if it was strong. My sense of smell was/is altered diminished and sometimes my nose misinterprets what I smell. Example peach scent smells like cat litter to me ... yet sometimes a smell or “taste” is too overwhelming it nauseates me even when I can’t really tell what the taste or smell is?

i ate food Based on texture, crunch or creamy. It’s hard to eat by texture when I’m still stuck on shakes, yogurt (TwoGood mixed with Protein Powder for breakfast), and cottage cheese (has to be the friendship whipped cottage cheese, 4oz is 90 calories and 16 grams Protein, though I prefer California style) with occasional BariatricPal juice protein or shots.

My swallowing issues along with taste and smell issues are giving me a strong aversion to food. I tried purée (tuna, chicken) and just couldn’t do it. Soft boiled egg isn’t bad but I’m tempting my allergies with that.

Funny I still love the taste of Pickle Juice (butter pickles) my one vice I couldn’t shake even more than sugar (which I had to fight the sugar demons quite some years ago) is Butter (the real stuff)

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
