Question on how you deal with the WLS haters...

Recommended Posts

I had my one month post surgery checkup yesterday for my RNY and I'm so happy I did this!! 😁 My close friends and family have been super supportive and I'm lucky with that.

But I'm irked when someone says I didn't 'need' this surgery, and didn't need to do something this 'radical' to my body. I went into the WLS program with a BMI of 42, 100 pounds overweight and my BP was 164/116 at the start of the program. That's a hot mess.

I've been polite about it but what I really want to do is smile sweetly and say... 'I appreciate your opinion over there Bob, but zero f*cks are given over here 🧐'.

And is it me or is it always skinny people who say this?

Anyone have a polite but firm method of dealing?

I'm still pretending I haven't lost any weight when people say, "You look different, have you lost weight?" to avoid awkward conversations, but I've lost 50 now, so I won't be able to pretend much longer, but I'm going to keep blowing them off. Only my husband knows that I had WLS and it's going to stay that way.

No, actually there are a lot of very defensive obese people who attack you in this manner, too.

For the rest of it, how about "I'm not sure how you have your foot in your mouth, head up your @ss, and nose in my business, yet here we are you effing wizard!"

(Paraphrased from a Facebook post 😁 )

😂I'm gonna copy/pasta that Facebook post and put that to Memory!! I also love how GradyCat is pretending she doesn't know what anyone's talking about!! That's fantastic!!

Congratulations on your success so far. Like you my blood pressure is a hot mess the main reason I've decided to have the surgery. My friend turns up her nose when talking about surgery. "This is her "l will never do that". Ironically she has always been over weight. Sometimes I feel Ike saying you do realize when we became friends I was skinny right and through out our friendship I always maintained my weight until I had my daughter.

Just ignore the haters, there are jealous people who does not know how to be happy for anyone.

It takes a courage to have weight loss surgery.

Haters gonna hate.

Agreed! It did take courage to have the surgery. I went through so much just to get the surgery, I was afraid that if I didn't do it, my life span was going to be significantly shortened with my out of control BP. That's what gets me, I did this for me, and I did this for my son so I'm around for him.

Attending group sessions and speaking to people post op I find those types of comments are directed towards women more than men. Quite a few women have brought out the comments during group sessions. Rarely do you hear of it being directed to men. Usually with guys it's "hey you're looking good what are doing or what's your secret, I need to try it." If a guy says he had WLS most people say "Wow, it sure makes a difference keep up the good work." Seldom do you hear much negativity towards men as you do women.

One woman in my group says that's because women are more critical of each other while guys really don't care. That is why boards like these are so important. We all need a place to go where we won't be judged for having WLS. Charlie laki maika'i

Yeah it's amazing how you lose friends after surgery but those are the ones who are in denial about their own weight issues and don't like being told when they are eating junk... Don't worry about them...

Well, that sounds good to me. :) Do it.

You don't have to justify your personal decisions to anyone. You don't have to be the poster child for WLS awareness & education. It takes hours of energy, effort and time to educate ignorance. Just refuse to play it. Let em hate. And you can laugh all the way to the bank in your size 2 jeans. :)

You can’t fix stupid and I’ve come to believe you can’t fix rude either. 🤬🤯😡
I have no idea how I’ll deal with this issue when it arises for me but I’m glad I’ve got all of your comments stored in my head 😎

A true assessment from my own youth.
Beauty is skin- deep
Ugly ( and I believe rudeness also) goes through to the bone.
Those people do not hate you and your WLS struggles half as much as they hate themsekves, they are lashing out at someone they think weaker. Stay strong, Prove them Wrong!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
