I am the same way - hate Decaf and just luv to have my 1 cup in the morning. Info from my nut said to wait a month but when I went for my 2 week follow-up my dr said I could start then. The coffee(not the caffeine) does cause extra acid to be produced in the stomach but that does not mean it leads to acid reflux. My tummy does get quite busy and loud after my morning coffee but does not have the same reaction to a hot tea.

I've got a question for you WLS and bypass vets out there.

I've been told by my surgeon's office that I can't have caffeine in any form for an entire year after surgery due to it causing additional acid reflux.

But most everything that I'm reading online is saying 30 days after coffee is all right, so long as it's limited to maybe a cup a day.

I'm one of those that HATES Decaf (it's got the worse aftertaste ever for me) and I only drink a cup a day in the morning to get me going. My job is very, VERY boring. (Data entry, sitting there inputting new accounts all day, no listening to music or anything to make the time go by faster.)

My question is, is my surgeon's office just trying to be super-safe? Is their demand a little ridiculous, or would I be okay with a cup a day on weekdays at work?

Thanks in advance! ❤️

I was told by my surgeon to wait 3 months until having caffeine, but that I could have Decaf after 1 month.

I lived off two shots of decaf espresso with a caramel Premier Protein shake for 3 months. Now I have at least two cups a day and do fine with it! No issues!

My program also said it wasn’t the caffeine but the coffee, no coffee of wither type for 1 month pre op to 6 months after.

My team said no coffee because of acidity. I found that when I tried Decaf coffee it hurt my stomach anyway. I drink Dandy Blend coffee substitute and now I’m used to it. I don’t miss coffee that much

I think of all the Decafs Folgers makes the best, I do miss coffee a little, see I'm allergic to chocolate so no cocoa for me, even sugar-free. I do like teas , drink them later in the day or make Decaf stevia- sweetened ice tea . But if Precious Pouch allows me, I may make me caramel Premier Protein and Folgers Decaf occasionally. At last report she is healing her inner surface, but does this mean I can have my AM warm drink again? Was afraid to ask Dr Noria, feared she wouldn't think, it would be advisible.

I just saw my nutritionist for the pre-op visit last week, she said no caffeine for two weeks prior and four weeks after. I'm also a Decaf snob, you know, there's a time and a place for it. Never, and in the trash lol. I hope you get a straight answer, a year without coffee sounds miserable.

I was told Decaf because it can cause dehydration. I haven’t had caffeine as I’m only 2 weeks post bypass but I had it every day post sleeve after a month or two. I just make sure to increase fluids to compensate and keep a closer eye on my urine output and color.

I had severe GERD, which is why I had bypass so I’m being careful about caffeine and acidic drinks this time. I’d rather feel good overall than rely on caffeine...for now.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
