Hi all here’s an update and follow on post from after my walk.

So the few days before my walk I started to get some heartburn with every sip I was taking and it was really painful. And feeling dizzy. That upset me greatly as I knew then I wasn’t drinking as much as I need to and just downright annoying. Each time I’d need to lay down.

I have my first post op appointment with the dr and dietician tomorrow so I’m going to discuss that with them.

Yay, I went for a walk for 25mins. (My knees are feeling it today, however it is more muscles that are tight making my knees hurt so I had already booked a physio appt before surgery, it is in a couple of days) And I need to do some fascia stretching - it’s painful but worth it.

My surgery wounds are healing well. 3 out of five have sealed right up. So I started to put a silicone scar gel on them all, it is also bacteria inhibiting.

I feel really great with the amount of weight that has gone, here’s some positive reasons so far...

Feel like I can actually go for a walk now.
Clothes are loose.
I feel just a little more agile than I was before.
I have the desire to want to do more now - a bit more positive.
Standing up from seated somewhere isn’t as hard.

I felt a bit nervous before my walk as I’d also been feeling dizzy the days before. Anyway, I blitzed it and it felt amazing to move and be outside. I’m hoping to keep a walk up each day, I’ll just do the same walk until I get fitter. So pats on the back to me! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

And I started to get a sore throat yesterday again, felt the same as the one I had before surgery 🙄 so I didn’t sleep well last night, only 3hours sleep. My ears are blocked so it’s all sinus swelling in my head - painful.

I realise this post is possibly long and boring. But an account of how it’s been for me.

I’m really looking forward to recovering more ie wounds healing internally and externally and being able to move more and not have so much heartburn, I want to see more dropping down on the scales.

I guess when I’ve had to lay down from the heart burn it was making me feel very lazy, like old habits of not moving from the couch.

Good luck to everyone having surgery that is still to come. You’ll be fine.

Also on the off chance anyone gets a rash from the surgical tape/bandaid things. Sudocream works wonders. High in zinc. And yes it’s also a nappy rash cream.

Big hugs all round to everyone, what we are doing is not easy but it’s the best thing long term. I’m excited about the future - that’s hard for me to say.

Have a wonderful day all. Be kind to yourself and others.

So last night my kids were eating ham and I thought I smelt really good. So I decided that a hotdog was soft food and I would try that. Well apparently my body disagreed and I had horrible stomach cramping and massive diarrhea. So I will be avoiding hotdogs for the foreseeable future. But on the plus side I dropped a pound and a half and I’m down to 216.4.

Hey everyone, thought I would check in. Had my RNY at Toronto Western hospital on April 8th, was released the next day. I seem to be doing pretty well. I'm tolerating most liquids. I've been pretty much sticking to Protein smoothies, smooth cream Soups, Premier Protein, V8, no sugar added pudding/jello/icecream. I sometimes change up the fruit or the Soup but at this point I just want to get past the liquids and start to incorporate more variety so I am keeping it simple until then. On Thursday I should be able to start pureed stage for two weeks then soft foods. I don't have any pain from my surgery. I get some discomfort if I am overdoing it a little and have to go rest. It takes me all day but I end up getting about 4 cups of liquids and 80-85g protein at this point. I've been taking an electrolyte supplement as my urine is still a bit dark and I think that helps. My steri strips haven't fallen off yet. I'm getting all my Vitamins in as well and doing some light walking everyday. My weight stalled a week after surgery but it seems to be moving again now. From my pre-op diet until now I've lost 25lbs in about 3-4 weeks.

Naiad Shoot at the hospital the day of my surgery I so tired that I told them to quickly knock me out with the anesthesia because I’m about to knock out because I’m so sleepy. Actually I’m pretty sure I was falling asleep as they started putting the anesthesia 😂. I didn’t fully wake up until about 12am. I was so tired that I was conscious when they moved me out of surgery bed. Well at least I think, all I remember is hearing okay we are done. . . Then I felt them lift my body and move it to another bed. Then I felt movement and again movement to another bed. I herd people around me, and I would slightly but just barely open my eyes. Because I didn’t want to wake up from the lights. And I remember in recovery room I was moving my legs and arms a lot 😂. My mother came to visit and she said I was I feeling I told her fine. . . But I’m really really still sleepy, so I knocked out. Woke up a few times when they took me to my room, just to make sure they gave me my glasses back. Then I knocked out again. I was so tired because I went to sleep at 12 something am, due to excitement for the surgery. I woke up at 5:30am for my surgery appointment that was at 11:30am but didn’t get into surgery until 5:30pm so I was getting really tired from being in that chair waiting for them to call me. You can say I did wake up a few time but the tiredness and sleepiness hit me hard. . . But not as hard as them gas pains from the surgery 😂 😬😅

You had so much time to wait! I would have gone insane! Just hurry up and wait! Thankfully my surgery and waiting before hand was quick but afterwards just interruption after interruption! I’m finally being told okay go to bed we will let you sleep until 6-7 when vitals are taken again! Uhhhh it is 1 am! Lol

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
