Constipation was seldom, if at all, mentioned in my six-month pre-op period. However it became very relevant in my post-op liquid diet period. I was in much pain for several days until the Miralax finally kicked in. By the way, if Miralax is a shortened version of the two words, miracle laxative, it fall far short but ultimately works.

Oh man, the struggle is real.

I used the Smooth Move tea. It's best to take it the night before, pray to your deity of choice and try again in the morning.

I will never ever again laugh at anyone who complains about Constipation. I really had no clue how bad it could be.

Pushing is bad for you so I would sit there and "crown" for a long time, then I would make the mistake of pinching and that log beast would quickly retract back in like an unlocked tape measure!

After two days of the same, I actually started rocking and bouncing on the toilet until I finally gave birth and nearly wept in relief and triumph.

When I finally emerged from the bathroom, my dad was wearing headphones... :57_cry:

Lmao, log beast, thank you for the laugh! SO, if you can tell you have a log beast that is ready but somehow unwilling to be born (lol), carefully press your perineum and it should slide right out (with some TP as a barrier of course). I've been doing this for years when I'm a bit bound up. If you Google you will find it's fairly common.

Seems like no one really knew about or understood the Constipation issue. Why didn't out doctors tell about this and how we might prepare better for it. When I called it was suggested that I give myself an enema or a suppository. I mean give me a break, when I put on all that weight over the years, my arms grew fatter, not longer.

Holy Crap or not crap. I am in the same boat. I go about every 3 days. They first time I went after surgery I was on the toilet for hours. It was to hard and large to pass I ended up straining till I was on verge of passing out and I tore my rectum. The pain from that was worse pain I have ever had. I talked with colo rectal surgeon that I work with and he said sitz baths. I spent the next 24 hours off and on in the tub. Fast forward 2 months I still get constipated but tear has improved. The pain no longer incapacitates me for days but maybe a few hours. I am doing metamucil twice a day. Have some good some bad. I keep trying to get in more Water to bulk up the stools but don't have that urge to drink like I once did. This is all new to me I use to go to bathroom twice a day.

Couldn't remember my last BM. My surgeon's partner said even on my limited diet, I should be going 3 times a week. Hit the MoM this AM ,about 3 hours later had results. Not a whole lot, but smooth and soft. My ?Question: why do I no longer have lower abdominal distress? The stuff could sit in there, collect and not colonic complaint. Now that I study on it , I have not had a spontaneous💩since surgery 6 weeks ago today. Am I weird,if that something my to be concerned about or will it smooth out once I am on a real food diet? 😞

I dont know if it work out or not I am 1 1/2 years out and I take a swig of MOM everynight. It is as if my body no longers knows how to go on its own and has been this way since surgery.

Strangely this makes me more relaxed, it's as though I know I'm not the only one after all.

I’m so glad I found this thread. I already suffer from diverticulitis and will have my sleeve surgery by the end of the year. This will be a major battle for me as Constipation is my enemy. I’ve already planned on IV therapy for a while, but I’ll make sure I am diligent with adding miralax into my daily routine when the time comes.

I never got constipated before surgery, but... surprise! As a benefit of being married, my husband has and uses everything I was allowed to use in the house. Dulcolax claims to work gently overnight, but just in case, I think you should try it on the throne.

My bestie offered to get me a bidet after the surgery... now it doesn't seem like such a terrible idea. I guess she was Googling my surgery.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
