Chapstick, baggy pants, baggy shirt, chargers for my kindle and my phone which my husband used because I was doped up and slept, and hair ties and deodorant. I wouldve work the same clothes i came in out, but the pants were zip up and who cares about a bra? Honestly, if all I brought was my cell and Chapstick I would have been fine. I made sure to leave with a "barf bag" just in case, I was nauseous, I don't do well with anesthesia.

Don't over pack. I did the same and only pulled out my phone charger, lip balm, lotion and comb. I literally had no desire to read or watch anything. I walked in the gown they gave me because I was too sick to change, but if you do want to change bring something easy to slip on like a really loose house dress. Nothing fancy. And I walked in the socks they gave me and threw them out when I was leaving. I did not want to use you much of my own stuff and bring it home with anything from the hospital.

I know everyone says to bring a sports bra, I guess because that's more comfortable, but pulling a sports bra over your head and shoulders can be like wrestling with an enormous rubber band. Personally, I'm going with an easy front clasp bra :)

I've also heard that a front-clasp bra is better than a sports bra for this reason. Same with a dress so that the waistband doesn't rub against your incisions.

My surgery is Tuesday. Thanks for posting these lists. Wasn’t sure what I should bring. Good luck to everyone with surgeries on the horizon!

Don't worry. You've come far and overcame little battles just to make it to this day. Tomorrow is your grand day. Smile, you are about to open a new chapter in your life and your future looks so much healthy already. To keep your mind from racing too much, try reading a book or watching a scary movie. Play monopoly or dominoes. Do anything that keeps your mind away from any thought that might bring you stress. Go to sleep with some soft music or or an audio book.

Keep us posted and please know that you will be in my prayers.

I bought a summer dress, better to walk the halls in. I also brought my favorite Water flavoring, glad I did, their choices were too sweet. I drifted off a lot so didn't read, but did use my cell phone and lip balm. Good luck to all having upcoming surgeries.

I brought practically nothing, and then I used practically nothing that I brought. That was probably for the best since there wasn't anywhere to store stuff and my poor family ended up hauling my backpack around with them while I was in surgery and immediately after. I was in the hospital less than 24 hours so spent it all in the gown and hospital socks. The four things I DID use: laptop, battery pack for phone, phone, headphones.

The most important/useful thing for me was loading up my phone and laptop with Netflix/Audible/iTunes content. I didn't have much energy to do more than walk, listen or watch.

The thing that I desperately wish I had done and would advise for anyone else going in for this surgery: load a water-tracking app onto your phone and create some presets before surgery. After surgery I weirdly got very little instruction, and instead the nurses just gave me a 1-oz cup and a pitcher of Water and then left me to figure it out. You are not going to be at your best at this point: you are going to be bleary and sleepy and non-chronological. I managed during that time to load the WaterMinder app onto my phone, and that's what I used to track water intake in the first 12 hours, but without it I would've been screwed. (My surgeon was not at all pleased to hear that the hospital had dropped the ball on this one, by the way.)

So pick a water-tracking app, and then PRESET it for 1-oz quantities. That way when you're still loopy as hell you can at least consistently repeat "open app, finish one cup (over 15 mins), tap 1oz quantity, pass out again".

You'll most definitely need the ChapStick.

My surgery is July 30th and, being a planner by nature, I’ve made a list of what I should include in my hospital bag for my one night. Is there anything I’m not considering?

Leggings
Hoodie
Camisole
Slippers
Deodorant
Carmex/Burt’s
Lotion
Socks
Sports bra
Baby wipes
Dial soap
Face wash
Underwear
Battery pack
Phone
Book
Extra long phone cable
Headphones
Headwrap
Glasses case
Mouthwash
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
WW Blanket
Gas ex thin strips

I think you are over doing it a little bit. You wont even be thinking about three quarters of those items when you get out of surgery.

What do you think I won’t need/think about?

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
