Size No-man's land!

Recommended Posts

I am VERY frustrated...right now, I am in a size void! A no-man's land! I'm too small for 1X, but too big for XL!!!! I never realized there was such a big difference between the two...but there is! I guess I shouldn't complain, I am down from a 3X to a...well, I dunno...smaller than 1X bigger than XL. Grrrrrrr

Anyone else have this issue?

hi musical,

i was in the garment industry for years and we actually did the "fittings" for clothes. this meant making up how each size fits

try different brands. each brand has it's own "fit" sometimes XL and 1 X are the same. sometimes it's just a length difference...etc.

this is actually a good problem going from 3X downward.

one word of caution...i started in size 22/24 in march.

as i went down sizes i bought alot of clothes. and i ended up flying through some sizes. needless to say i am giving them to charity. i think i was anticipating being like my old self when i always intended to get to a smaller size fast but couldnt.

anyway good luck in your search....

That is the worst feeling. I have lost/gained weight many times and hated that part the most. I always made it just to the border to XL and sometimes it fit, and sometimes it didn't.

I felt like I was right in between plus sizes and regular sizes and I hated it! I just wanted to belong to one them!

Just focus and use your XL clothes as a goal. You will be there in no time!

I've got bra problems at the moment. 14E waaaaay too big so time for new bras. 14DD too big. 12E too big in the cup, perfect in the back, 12 DD slightly too small for my bigger boob, lol.

I've been in the triple digit X's for so long that I didn't even know that 1X and XL were different! I'm going to be in for a lot of surprises along the way!

I am in size hell right now, too. I am wearing a very comfortable size 18w stretch jean right now. In my drawer, however, I have a couple of pairs of 20w stretch jeans that are too SMALL, a pair of 18w jeans that are way too loose, a pair of 18 reg. that fit ok, and LOTS of size 18 jeans that are just a tiny bit too small. And MOST of them are the same stinkin BRAND!!!! It's crazy!

Plus, I am way out of proportion on top, my shoulders, arms, neck and chest have all gotten small enough to wear a 1X, but I have a terrible spare tire that makes a 1X and even many 2X tops very uncomfortable. So I end up wearing a 3x top that looks sloppy because the upper portion of it is too big.

travel girl

you explained me!!!! and the worst thing apart my spare tire is when i get a shirt to cover the tire it falls off my shoulders!!!!

i did find that 18 fit better than 16w cant wait until 16 fit better than 14w

I can relate

I am in the same boat. The 14+ from the fat store are too big........The 14 in the regular store are too small. My size at the moment is 16 regular. The problem is that here (Ontario Canada) most regular stores do not carry size 16, or they only have one or two items...........in most cases these items are in styles that look good on a size 2, but just made bigger.

OH yeah, XL t-shirts are big, and look sloppy, but the L t-shirts look tight and show unsightly bulges..........

I have also been stuck at this weight for about 3 weeks!!! YIKES

I am confused also. I find that there is an XL and there is an XL!

There is a sort of 'teen' XL that is more like a ladies M, and there is an XL that is a true XL. That probably made no sense at all, but there ARE some XLs true to size.

I hope you find something nice to wear. But take my advice, don't spend too much $, because you won't be wearing it for long. I have found this to be true.

Now 13 pounds from goal, I am starting to not be afraid to spend some money on clothes.

Good luck

Yes. My friend and i where cloths shopping the other day. I always wore a 2x because it hides the rolls and it does look sloppy but i feel more comfortable wearing it. so now i tried a 1x. Too small expecially in the breast area. we laughed when i ask the sales clerk if they made a 1x and a half.

I was just banded on Nov 1st, so I haven't changed clothing size yet - but in the past, during my MANY years of dieting, I found something that helped me alot. It's a "shaping" garmet from a company called Lipo in a Box. It's also a lot like the shaping garments you can get from Spanx, but I just personally prefer the Lipo in a Box. The garments come in all different types - targeting different "trouble" spots. They are a huge help in fitting into the next size down clothing, plus they smooth out any bumps or bulges we may have, and hold down any "jiggles". They are soft garments, nothing like the old fashioned "girdles"!! I buy mine from QVC (a home shopping network), but imagine you could find their website online. But since these types of undergarments are becoming more popular, I would think you could find different brands at regular dept stores. Even when I would get close to goal weight, I'd still like to wear these just because I felt they made my clothes look better.

Just an idea for those who are in "Clothing Hell" aka - Between Sizes!

I can SOOOOO relate! I was so excited when I got into a 16 I went out and bought tons of pants. HAHAHAHA That was a mistake! I BLEW RIGHT PAST 16 within a week and they were baggy! I am now on the loose side of 14 and have alread ordered some 12's (denim leggings, which I live in). I had just bought a bunch of 1X tops and now I am 14-16. I doubt any of the clothes I wore this summer will be fitting me next year. If it wasn't so invigorating and amazing, I would say it is frustrating....but I can't say that because I am having too much FUN!

It's funny how sizes change. It seems that it has no relation to weight loss. My loss has been steady but the sizes change in fits and starts. I was in a size 20 for about 2 weeks. I have been in 18 pants for more that a month without a budge And do be careful not to buy jr size by mistake. I never had this problem before, but I bought 2 sweaters online for a store that sells jr only (I had no clue) and they are way too small! I thought about returning them but I love having clothes too small to try on again and again until they finally fit. With any luck they will fit me sometime during next winter!

Musical mamma, I know the feeling! I coud have written that post. I am right where you are right now.

I hate not having a nice proper pair of pants to wear that good good on me without bagging out in the rear with the X1 or showing everything I own with the Xl.

I was just thinking this morning that I cannot wait til I fit into an extra large.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
