I had this in the ER a couple days ago when I went in for dehydration. The nurse only personally knew one person who had had a Bariatric Surgery and it was her ex who was 500 lbs. She asked me in a very honest manner why I did it when I wasn’t super heavy like that. We ended up having a really nice discussion about comorbities and such. I even showed her my 4 small and well healing tummy incisions.
She was coming from a place of honest curiosity and I got to have a nice moment helping her learn a little more about the subject. When she said I didn’t look big enough to need it compared to the 500 lb guy she knew, I just said Thank You! I’m not overly sensitive about someone saying something like that. I never assume they’re being a jerk and implying that I should have just dieted and crap. Honestly, most people, especially health care people, aren’t back handed like that.
I honestly took it as a compliment and then we had a nice conversation for like 20 minutes and she learned new stuff. It worked out well for all involved.

I saw one of my best friends of 8 years over the weekend. We haven't met up for awhile, so she didn't know I was going for the gastric bypass surgery next week. So when we went out to lunch I explained why i couldn't eat because on the liquid diet, etc. She didn't mean it maliciously, more of a compliment I assume but she said "No offense, you don't even look like you need the surgery. When I think of people getting weight loss surgery I think of the TV show my 600 pound life." Mind you, this is the same girl I spent 4 years of college with struggling with weight, AND was there when I had my first gastric Sleeve surgery 2 years ago (which was a failed surgery). AND she said the SAME thing again. I really think some people just don't understand. This girl has been normal weight her entire life. Doesn't understand the knee pain, comorbidities, and just goes by the looks aspect of it. I didn't get mad, I just brushed it off. To be honest, it really helps knowing people don't do it maliciously, they are probably comparing your body to others they have seen. This nurse 100% shouldn't have said anything, but maybe in her eyes it was a compliment.

Sort of like the young boy who told his cousin while dancing with her at dancing class. "For a fat, girl, you don't sweat much!" he undoubtedly thought it a wonderful compliment. The fact he probably is still alive is because he didn't say it to me. I would have knocked, him backwards onto his scrawny buttocks! 👊

I would let it go. I think in her job she’s seen people a whole lot bigger than you and that was her way of saying you’re not that bad off. Just keep positive thoughts in your mind and don’t let anything negative get in the way of the amazing life changing experience you’re going through.

And also she might have just been saying "You carry your weight well!" a quasi- compliment. I believe my first reaction would be. "What?" followed by "Thank You, I Think"😏

If that's all she said, I think it's pretty clear it was a compliment. Basically saying you don't look super fat.

If she lectured you on it or tried to talk you out of it that's a different story.

I work in a hospital that does thousands of bariatric surgeries a year and it's incredibly common for staff to say wow how's that person qualify or they're not that big. They're not insults, it's people saying they don't think you're fat.

If someone trys talking you out of it or belittles you that's different

I usually just respond with something that makes them want to put their foot in their mouth like "Well, it doesn't look like I don't need it but my liver disease says otherwise." Then maybe she will think twice about those kinds of comments.

I would have taken as a compliment. Several of the found nurses I work with have been surprised that I am having it because they don't think I look that big. I'm 100 pounds overweight .

I have a family member who suffers from seizures, when she is in control you would think things are perfect within and for, herm Does this negate the fact, she does have this neurological blip? My point: just because it isn't apparent doesn't mean,it isn't there. I am happy you pass for being perfect,to thses other people but you and your doctor may know your true state of health, you and Doctor make the final decision both your viewing public.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
