I have had kidney stones prior to wls I am wondering.if anyone has issues with them post op?

If so did you get them before surgery, have they gotten worse?

I am certainly hoping not I know after surgery I will be much more concious of the Water intake I am getting.

But it scares me those little suckers were the worst.

I have the same problem as you. My wife had the bypass and that’s what I was going to get. My kidney doctor recommended that I get the sleeve as the bypass would put me at a higher risk of stones. I am 5 months out and no signs of them. Here’s the thing though…As the weight is coming off my Calcium level is going down. Not normal and might never be but it was low enough to stop the meds for it

Ah I see I have only had 2 and never had the chance to get them tested to see what they were made of. I know that is a key in stones so you can figure out what excess minerals are there.

We're your stones Calcium? Is that what you mean by the levels going down?

So were you on medication to help prevent kidney stones?

I am glad to hear you haven't had issues. Stones are the worst! I seemed to get mine around the time that I was following a Keto diet. So that could have been the cause.

I have had them on and off sense I was in my 20’s. I have an elevated level of Calcium in both my blood and urine. I had all the tests and nothing medical going on, just one of those **** happens kind of things. I was taking something but I could not tell you what it was. After my surgery, we retested and I was almost normal.

BTW

When I got my list of Vitamins to take…The calcium supplement was X’ed out in red

Awesome I hope that this will help then! That's great they are not fun at all I have had some people tell me that they were worse than the surgery! I will probably have my blood and urine tested to see. It's been about a year since my last one and I don't want another!

You guys really need to double check with your doctors about this Calcium thing.

Most people get calcium oxalate stones....and it's easy to think....if I have too much calcium, I'll get stones! Must not take too much calcium!

Except, typically...this is a VERY bad idea....because dietary calcium BINDS with dietary oxalate so it can be safety passed and NOT turn into stones. Stopping calcium might actually INCREASE your risk of stones if you eat oxalate rich foods.

I know this all sounds bizarre......but please check with your doctor to be sure you're following the best protocol for you and your specific situation.

To avoid stones.....Drink lots of Water. Avoid salt. Limit animal Protein.

Study a list of oxalate rich foods and eat them sparingly.

I'm still pre op and didn't ever have mine tested but yes I am going to talk to my doctor and see what they suggest.

Gosh I wish I had my kidney text book but sometimes the shape of them is indicative of what variety they were. Ask your urologist or nephrologist but I think 1 is pointy and they call those staghorn, some are rounder and usually they can tell by color as well as laboratory dissection. Now where oh where is that blasted book?😕

I was able to catch one of mine it was Brown in color with little yellow crystals on it. Meanest little thing ever this was by far the worst one I have passed. They took it but didn't test it [emoji25]☹️ Image-20180430_170602.jpg

This is true if you are using a natural source of calcium. If you are taking a supplement you can increase the chances of stones.

If you have high blood Calcium PLEASE see an endocrinologist and get your parathyroid hormone checked! That was the cause of my high blood calcium and stones.

I needed parathyroid gland surgery to correct it (NOT related to the thyroid, just nearby). It was left untreated way too long and I needed major surgery instead of minor and wound up with osteopenia from it.

BTW most stones are Calcium. The others don’t happen frequently.

I also have dealt with kidney stones prior to surgery. Not very far out from surgery. My urologist told me to only take calcium citrate as the Calcium carbonate increases kidney stones. You even have to watch if you take Tums as they are carbonate based.

Sent from my Pixel XL using BariatricPal mobile app

good to know i will have to check into this as well.

Its a struggle as the diet that we are supposed to follow post op is what you should avoid with stones

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
