Out With the Old--In With the New!

I was going to call this Break On Through To The Other Side (thank you Doors). But I figured I'd get sick of it after a while. I'm going to use this space to keep track on the 2 week march toward surgery and then to keep track of the recovery and progress. That way I can keep it all together and if I just do one thread, it's all in one place without clogging up the Blog Area. I'm sure it's gonna be excruciatingly boring to everyone--me included! I'm a list and minutia kinda gal. I like tracking and counting--although I can be equally lax about crap. So I stop just short of OCD town (not that there's anything wrong with that).

My official 2 week liquid diet starts tomorrow. I decided to jump on it today because Sunday feels like a great place to start and because it's hard to do better than yesterday as my last food day before surgery. I'm a Texan, born and raised, and yesterday we had a fairwell to my ass and thighs via a Texas BBQ tour through Houston and Tomball. I ate so much brisket, sausage and ribs, I can honestly claim to be over it. Growing up in a BBQ family, slow smoked meats is almost in my blood. So it was only natural that I would choose that as the last rights.

I'm having RNY on February 20th and as I understand it, moist (fatty) brisket might not be my friend post surgery. Supposedly high fat foods (which moist brisket is) might cause a sort of "dumping" in the poop department. So I figure my future, once healed, might only include lean cuts of brisket and smoked meats. It's a choice I will readily make to lose weight and get my health back.

So the morning Day 1 hasn't been very difficult--a little hunger and growly tummy, but nothing that makes me feel anxiety. Protein drinks on board and this afternoon will shop for SF popsicles, SF jello and bone broth. I think I'll stick to packaged bone broth so I can get the actual nutritional information from a certified source. There's no real way for me to tell how many calories and carbs are in the bone broth I make here at home.

My Pre-Op Plan includes: 80-100g of protein; low fat; 60g carbs and somewhere around 1000cals per day.

4-5 Protein Drinks containing a minimum of 15g of protein per serving. They must be low fat and low sugar and can't contain over 4g of sugar per serving. I can have clear low sodium broths, sugar free drinks, sugar free jello and sugar free clear popsicles (no fudgsicles or ice cream based pops).

I will do this from now until February 20th.

I'm pretty sure I will be doing plenty of the following:

It's happened to all of us! We are all on still such a learning curve and everyone's body responds differently to foods, combinations etc.

In my opinion, the best part of this is lessons learned and getting back to what works.

Thanks for the honesty. makes this journey so much easier! xoxo

I'm off the smoothies altogether -- onward to 4 meals with real food. Its tough to get the protein goal in when I'm limited to 10 ounces of lean protein a day, but I can squeeze it in. I had reg coffee with half and half this morning, so no judging from me, that's for sure. :)

Pretty cool that you lost weight -- lots of reports out there on the benefit of switching thing up now and then!

Yeah--at this point it may be like mainlining an insulin spike. You're limited to 10oz of lean protein because of why? I'm guessing it's your number of meals + snacks and the volume limit on them?

Cuz I "could" eat 6 mini meals (mostly I just do 5 mini meals) with the 2oz protein. But I don't always get 2oz protein per meal. The only thing that keeps me sane is having that 1/2-1oz of veggie. LOL.

And yeah, so weird about the loss.

Yup. My instructions are 4 meals a day with 2.5 ounces lean protein, plus fruit/veges. I'm not sure, but I think at 3 months we drop to 3 meals a day.

Ha! IKR? I was seriously dumbfounded. I take FULL responsibility, but this was before I started paying and praying and just basking in the high. I looked at the empty glass and I was like "Whah?" and then I was FUDDDDDGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEE! (only I didn't say fudge). And about 5 minutes later I was doubling over with pain and bartering with God to make the bad lady stop. Soooo funnynotfunny! LOL.

After all that, I'm just now finishing my meal plan and my second protein latte. It's take all morning just to get the first down. LOL. [emoji20] I should go to clears but I'd rather sell my Aunt Fanny than go back to clears. It's hard enough to get the protein lattes in. But they are the basics that have worked all this time. So I don't see discontinuing them.
Oh and the taco salad? Totes amazeballs! If you can handle 3/4c of food without a weight limit and 263 cals per meal. You should go for it!
I'll post my menu accountability soon.

At grocery store grabbing taco salad stuff :)

Ok, so 10 oz of chicken breast is like 308 calories, and snapper is 283 - so that is not particularly enough calories IMO

It adds up once you add in veggies, fats to it. :) Mine averages about 450-550 cals/day like this.

Update: 8 Weeks Post | 196lbs (-26.4lbs from SW of 222.4lbs--hey, that's 3.3lbs/wk--I'll take it, even though it means I'm "just average!" )

Food: 1/2 cup by volume; 3.5-4.0oz by weight if it fits within the 1/2cup volume; 60-65g protein/day; 450-550cals; <20g carbs, <30g fat. Eating 5-6 small meals per day about 3-4 hours apart. Regular food without restrictions.

Liquids: 120fl oz of liquids per day.

Vitamins: 2 Celebrate Chewable Multis; 1500mg Ca Cit; 100mg B1; 1000mg B12 eod; 18mg Celebrate Iron Chewable eod.

Exercise: Walking 7 days x 1 hour/day.

Interesting observations last week. I had a "semi-cheat." I call it a semi one because I only ate 750 cals for the day--but I ate out of control at a meal and exceeded my 1/2cup volume goal. I try to keep this a hard core rule to keep me on track. It actually didn't even qualify as a true binge or cheat, everything was on plan and I only exceeded carbs by about 15g for the day. So not a belly buster. But still it signaled that I had lost sight of the main goal and focus of my plan.

Week 7 felt plagued by more hunger. I've read where this does happen, almost overnight. You wake up and one day you know you can eat more and your hunger "brightens." And this is what it felt like. I just felt like, dang--why not take a little break, a reward and ease the obsession a bit? Why not go have a cheat meal, or a date night? Where's the fire? Where's the rush to get to goal?

It didn't help that the week before I'd lost 7+ lbs thanks to a new diuretic and by Week 7 the weight loss was cut in half. So I wasn't getting a scale fix. Seeing a loss of 2lbs a day on the scale is intoxicating--even though you know it's only fluid loss. It's much harder to watch a 0.4lb loss per day. But statistics show that people who weigh daily lose 15% more weight than those who do not. To me, the scale holds my nuts to the fire and reminds me of the gravity of my undertaking. So daily weighing will continue until morale improves--so will the daily beatings.

So I started dallying with green smoothies because my lying rationalizing bi*ch mind kept whispering, "You need greens."

And by greens it meant, "Gimme some sugar bio*ch! I need my fix!" Cuz we all know that to eat any good amount of greens post surgery where all you can handle is 1/2c of food that needs to primarily consist of protein, equates to green smoothies. And green smoothies come with fruit and fruit comes with fructose (a liver bomb) aka sugar. And so that just added fuel to the fire of hunger. It took me a few days to figure this out and realize that I needed to circle the wagons and refocus on my objective and goal. It's so easy to fool ourselves that we're not cheating, we're not slacking off. And it is so human.

So by the end of this week, I refocused and went back to my basics. I realized that my morning protein lattes (6oz decaff + 1-2oz PP + 1oz SF Torani Syrup) are very satiating. They also make me less hungry for the remaining day. I'm easily able to skip afternoon snack time because of priming the pump in the morning with about 15g of protein. So I reinstituted them. They may remain for quite some time. I also went back to my typical menus that work and focused on eating chicken, turkey, fish, and shrimp. Yep! Check!

The result is that the end of Week 7 feels like I'm back in control. Hunger has gone away again. I feel energized to continue my quest to normal BMI. And I'm back with as much energy about being 100% successful as I was the day I had surgery. I had such zest and optimism on that morning--like the surgery was going to change everything. And it has. I just have to keep that at the forefront of my memory.

This surgery has changed everything. I am no longer the same person that I was. As such--I no longer do certain things with food...it's just gonna take a little while to convince my lying bi*ch ass little junkie brain that I mean business and that there's a new sheriff in town!

More later...

Its hard to believe it has been 8 weeks already -- you are doing great with weight loss and walking, too!

Thanks sweetie!

I really can't believe it's 8 weeks.

Hey such mind-numbing detail but are you tracking by actual 7 day weeks? Or are you going by months?

Cuz I'm technically 8 weeks today but a couple days shy of my 2 month surgiversary date. :) The devil is in the details. Right? So is Crazy Town, population 1.

I live in that town too— just had that conversation with myself this week. April 20th is fourth month... but tomorrow is 17 weeks.

F’d up thinking :)

Pleasedtameetcha! I'm the sheriff round these parts. You must be the mayor! :)

So um, yeah, answer the question. Which one is it? Months counted by actual weeks? Or months counted by the surgery date. (ie Feb 20=M1; March 20=M2; April 20=M3, etc) :D

Welcome to
