Buddies Group - Surgery Dec 4 to 15, 2017

Im so happy to hear your nausea is getting better. My surgery was on the 12 and the nausea is awful. If it wasnt for that I'd be running laps! Well not really but I'd feel a ton better. [emoji4]

Sorry to hear that! Did your doc send you home with some anti nausea meds? I got sent home with some and was told to slowly wean off them and the paracetamol so it wasn't a shock to the body.

Had my first post op visit today! Got some IV fluids for dehydration...funny how quickly that sneaks up on you. Looking back, I've been really nauseous so I haven't been drinking like I should. I was told part of my nausea could be from dehydration. It's a vicious cycle. Don't drink enough because I'm nauseous and nauseous because I don't drink enough. I'm feeling much better now after the fluids. Also, my diet was advanced! I'm now in full liquids for a couple weeks. I had Tomato Soup tonight and it was delicious.

Hope you all are healing well and for those of you in the home stretch, good luck!

that's a good reminder KCRN..it does sneak up sometimes...congrats on getting your diet advanced! I'm living for Wednesday when hopefully that will happen for me at my first follow up! are you feeling good now? been doing better with the fluids/nausea?

HI Jeannie, I only had one day of pure liquid pre-op, The day before surgery. I was told to lose 6 pds and report to the office the day before to weigh in... if I had not lost 6 pds he would have to reschedule. I lost 10. Just sensible eating and doing what I should have done all along. I probably wouldve cancelled if I had done 2 weeks of full liquids before. LOL

oh wow -that's some pressure but thankfully it worked out! I am on liquids only for the 2 weeks post (have until the 21st) and I'm already getting a bit stir crazy on it and it's after I'm sleeved...god bless these people who had to do it pre-op!

Yes, I had surgery the 4th and recovered well. Off pain meds day 3, no complications at all...... Except I'm hungry all time which I wasn't before. Nothing seems to satisfy it. I'm hoping that since I advance diet today it will be better. I licked a French fry the other night. I've dropped 20 lbs so far and I'm following my post op menu. Something's not right

I had surgery dec 11th so about five days out and the only incision that aches is the main one. I have absolutely no appetite lol but for some reason I want refried Beans lol!!! I licked a candy yesterday and felt totally defeated for doing it but I got on the scale this morning and seemed to have dropped more lbs it’s a mental thing I think

I'm 9 days out now...and I know I'm in full fat burning mode. My post op 2 week diet is only 8oz of Protein Shake total each day plus fluids. I know I'm in full fat burning mode, not just from the scale but apparently I have the ketosis breath that comes with low carb diets. It's really bad - my poor husband.

Anyone else experiencing this or know how long this should last? when I research I get that it can last while you're eating low carb...eek.

Yes, feeling much better, thank you! I left the infusion center where I got my fluids feeling like a new woman. Yesterday I actually got all my Protein and more than enough Fluid in for the first time since surgery. Hope your follow up goes well!

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
