THE BIG NO NO's of what never to eat or drink after the sleeve.

My nutritionist said it stretches the stomach

Straws or carbonation? Science has shown neither does. Doctors theorized they might in the early days of the surgery, but science has disproven that.

I was told to avoid it until I got my Fluid goal bc it could dehydrate you. I haven't had coffee or any caffeine since before surgery which was may 31. I actually don't miss it. I thought I would but I have a ton of energy.

It doesn't. Science has disproven that myth--

Working on Lap Band to VSG revision here!

When I had the band in 09 I gave up soda for an entire year and then I just had one periodically. It never hurt and all the tests I've had to get the VSG have not shown a stretched pouch. I think the bubbles may upset the stomachs of some. I think the biggest reason is drinking your calories is not a good idea. Believe me I gained like 50lbs on liquids alone. The sugar in sodas caused me to crave more sugary things that would also just slide right through the band. I feel like the same could happen with VSG if I don't cut them out.

I was back on coffee 3 days post-op, but that was with my team's blessing. We talked about it - alot. Until about 6 months out carbonation hurt to drink. Now, I can drink seltzer with no problem and every once and a while, I'll have a diet coke.
Rice - I'll put a tablespoon or two on my plate and nibble just to get the taste. I eat the high Protein Barilla Pasta, but am full after 1/2 cup cooked.
I have a glass of wine or a cocktail a few nights a week, but keep them within my daily calorie intake and only after I have met my protein and Water goals for the day.
Sometimes I'll have half of a small baked potato. I eat everything, but it gets logged and I don't go over my budget of calories - so if I have a slice of bread its going to be a damn good one because I'm not wasting those calories on a stinkin piece of white bread!
Today, I had a small piece (about the size of my thumb) of an Amish soft pretzel at the farmer's market. My daughter ate the rest - but that small piece was enough to scratch the itch I had.

Thanks for sharing this!!!

I'm my experience drinking from a straw gives me gas pains. I'm 4 months out and I avoid them. Gas pain is no joke. As for the sodas. I have not had anything carbonated till 2 weeks, ago at my daughters wedding I had punch that had ginger ale in it. Had terrible gas the next day. Guess we all live and learn. For me caffeine, carbonation, and straws are out. Down 100 lbs so I'm not complaining.

One of the reasons (the biggest) I'm choosing the sleeve over RNY is because I REFUSE to give up coffee and soda. I will cut down on soda and coffee and refrain from them during the healing process, but I will not go the rest of my life without either of them. Lord help me! Don't take my coffee away!

jess9395, you make me so happy! I've been told to give up coffee for a YEAR, and I think that's going to be the hardest thing to do (I start my pre-op diet tomorrow). But I'll do it for as long as I can, anyway--may add it back in several months if everything else is going well . . .
But things like rice, potatoes, white bread--I'm figuring I'm simply not going to be eating those things. I like them fine, but it's more than a fair trade for a normal weight and serious health improvements. There are enough things we can eat that I like--no need to start triggering carb cravings.
Good luck!

Hi Jess, I gave up caffeine some years ago and now only drink Decaf which now you really can't taste the difference. I believe decaf is less acidic. Would this maybe help you? Good luck!

I'm Jess and the acid in the coffee doesn't bother me, I was just acknowledging that it bothers some people. And yes decaf has less acid, but cold brew regular has less than normal decaf.

Not sure if you're joking/exaggerating.

The bypass is a great surgery, but there's a lot more to it than a sleeve. I don't think soda and coffee are good reasons that offset any negatives from the bypass.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
