I'm curious, I have read that I can never drink carbonated beverages ever again after the sleeve, such as desante Water that has fizz, but zero calories or sugar etc. Why?

And I have heard no bread or rice. Not even basmati rice? Why?

What other foods do I need to know are major no no's and why so I don't make a mistake and eat or drink them.

I went to my first appointment yesterday & was told that carbonated drink are basic gas. & there is not enough room in the sleeved stomach .

My surgeon and nut said there is nothing off limits after surgery, once you are back to a full diet. Just remember, everything has consequences that we put in our bodies, some good some bad. Make smart choices in other words, is what it came down to.

I had a sip from my daughters soda once while out and it didnt do anything physically to me, but its not something you would want to drink all the time. Empty calories and no nutritional value.

Some will claim the carbonation will stretch the sleeve, but the science doesn't support that.

The gas bubbles don't do well in many sleeves though. I'm four years out and it hurts my stomach something fierce if I even take a few sips on accident (switched cocktails with hubby and got his gin and tonic a few days ago). Others don't have that issue. But MOST carbonated drinks are sugar filled and not what we should be choosing anyhow.

Rice... for me same thing. For whatever reason it hurts. Those are the only things that hurt. Untoasted bread and Pasta sit like a rock, but they don't hurt. Everything else is fine.

Simple carbs--rice, bread, pasta, potatoes--are all things most plans advise you actively avoid while losing. They provide you nothing more than quick energy which you don't need if you're trying to lose weight. Even the "whole grain" versions provide no Protein and truly very little Fiber. Get that from veggies, Beans and occasionally some fruit (which is also loaded with sugar, so I avoided it while losing).

The truth is there are very few never foods. There are some that won't agree with your stomach, there are some poor choices that will slow or stop your weight loss. But eventually if you can use moderation you can eat most things. But simple carbs trigger desire for more simple carbs in most of us so long term they may be something you want to avoid.

I haven't had surgery yet but my nutritionist said the same. No untoasted bread or rice because it just sits there and swells up in the pouch and it will be uncomfortable and takes up the room where we would want our Protein. Other than that she doesn't want coffee because we have a higher risk of developing ulcers due to the caffeine and acidity. And of course we've all heard no carbonated drinks or straws. But she's said some people have issues with tolerating foods after and it can take up to 6 months to a year before you can, if at all. My mom had the RNY 10 years ago and still has issues with Pasta and beef getting stuck, and she'll have to make herself throw up to relieve the pressure in her chest. But I'd much rather risk not being able to eat 1 or 2 foods than being so overweight. Good luck on your journey!

Lord help the person who gets between me and my coffee! Thank goodness that wasn't off the table for my plan! At least that's a different reason than most give--that it's a diuretic. It's not, science has disproven that (I've posted links in other threads and don't have the time to look them up again).

Yeah it has some acid but if it's brewed properly that's minimized. But there is no increased risk of ulcers from drinking coffee:

AND gonna blow your mind here... we are at no higher risk for ulcer than the average bear. Ulcers are almost always caused by a virus. The issue with sleevers and ulcers is not increased risk, it's that if we DO get an ulcer the normal treatment (basically removing the ulcerated tissue surgically) is next to impossible because we've removed so much already. So it's not that we have a higher risk it's that the consequences are much more dire if we get one.

jess9395, you make me so happy! I've been told to give up coffee for a YEAR, and I think that's going to be the hardest thing to do (I start my pre-op diet tomorrow). But I'll do it for as long as I can, anyway--may add it back in several months if everything else is going well . . .

But things like rice, potatoes, white bread--I'm figuring I'm simply not going to be eating those things. I like them fine, but it's more than a fair trade for a normal weight and serious health improvements. There are enough things we can eat that I like--no need to start triggering carb cravings.

I gave up coffee while I was pregnant with each kid and I tell them to this day that's how much I love them (course science has since said 1-2 cups per day is Ok during pregnancy, drat!)

I cut back before surgery so I wouldn't have withdrawal and they stayed coffee free for three months while my stomach healed (that's how much I love myself).

Now I don't add sugar or a million calories worth of stuff to make a coffee "drink" I just drink coffee. And now that my weight has settled I do cappucino or a flat white a couple of times a week (not sweetened). If frappucinos or macchiatos or lattes are your thing it falls into the don't drink your calories category. But coffee? Science sez not so bad!

I was back on coffee 3 days post-op, but that was with my team's blessing. We talked about it - alot. Until about 6 months out carbonation hurt to drink. Now, I can drink seltzer with no problem and every once and a while, I'll have a diet coke.

Rice - I'll put a tablespoon or two on my plate and nibble just to get the taste. I eat the high Protein Barilla Pasta, but am full after 1/2 cup cooked.

I have a glass of wine or a cocktail a few nights a week, but keep them within my daily calorie intake and only after I have met my protein and Water goals for the day.

Sometimes I'll have half of a small baked potato. I eat everything, but it gets logged and I don't go over my budget of calories - so if I have a slice of bread its going to be a damn good one because I'm not wasting those calories on a stinkin piece of white bread!

Today, I had a small piece (about the size of my thumb) of an Amish soft pretzel at the farmer's market. My daughter ate the rest - but that small piece was enough to scratch the itch I had.

The type of drink I drink is Desanti Water. It is flavored, has no calories, no nothing in it. It is just fizzy. I used this to get off of Pepsi because I was addicted to the fizz and the flavor. So this fizzy water is yummy, and I would hate to give it up since there is no calories in it.

My MD never restricted straws. I've used them from day one no problem at all. I'm actually able to drink more using a straw than not. I'm not almost 7 mths out

I was told to avoid it until I got my Fluid goal bc it could dehydrate you. I haven't had coffee or any caffeine since before surgery which was may 31. I actually don't miss it. I thought I would but I have a ton of energy.

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
