Hi all, I was sleeved on 27th July in Brisbane and I am struggling with how hungry I am.

I had no idea how bad it would be and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I have found that if I have some milk in the morning I am not too hungry during the day but I don't know if milk is the best for my new sleeve.

At the moment I am having 125mls of up n go or milk for brekkie, 125mls Protein Water for morning tea, half a cuppa Soup for lunch, juice or protein water again for afternoon tea and half a cuppa soup for dinner. And then approx 300mls water through out the day/night.

Does this sound normal? Does it get easier?

I was sleeved on the 26th and today started feeling very hungry. I thought that would go away so I'm a bit disappointed. Your liquids sound right. You might want to add some more Protein.< br>

I was sleeved on July 26th and feeling very, very hungry since the day after surgery. I have never felt such strong hungry pains in my entire life. It was so bad it woke me up one morning. I wanted so badly to eat something unhealthy at that moment, but instead I grab one chewy Calcium Vitamin at 5:30am and called it a meal. Now this is pretty bad. LOL

Acid can mimic hunger pains. If you aren't on an acid blocker perhaps you should be? Or if you are maybe the dosage needs to be increased? I needed 40mg instead of the 20mg I started on.

Definitely this. It is amazing how much it can help. Also drinking a Protein Shake instead of Protein Water would probably help. I know they don't taste amazing, but they still kill my hunger 3 years after surgery. Just stick with it. It definitely gets easier to resist the urges over time. You have got this!

The Omeprazol REALLY helped me a lot.

It is normal. It will get better.

I went through the same thing for a few weeks post-op. Torture! I kept thinking, "I just had my stomach cut out and I'm still hungry?? WTF?"

I did take a PPI, but I don't know if it made any difference; I still felt ravenous. All I can say is that it will pass. In the meantime, the only advice I can give is for you to try and keep busy to keep your mind off of it.

Hi, very important question, are you taking a proton pump inhibitor??

I thought I was constantly hungry too, but it ended up it was acid reflux. But because my body had no idea what was happening and the parts of the stomach that sends signals to the brain has been messed with, my body had no idea how to interpret the signals it was getting, so it told me I was hungry. I was not, I was in a form of pain. lol!

The part of the stomach that send the hormones to the brain telling it it's hungry has been removed so this is most likely, not always but most likely, due to acid in your stomach. Get on a proton pump inhibitor, I had to double up on mine, one in the AM and one in the PM for a while.

Hahahaha oh I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way! For some reason I thought that I wouldn't be very hungry at all straight after but I was wrong! I am one week post op now and feeling great :) even did cooking for other people and wasn't as much of a struggle as I thought it would be :)

Oh wow thanks for that! I didn't even think of that as an option. I might email my doctor and ask him what he thinks.

Thank u so much SuperDave! I definitely feel the support on this forum which is amazing when no one else in your life really understand what you are going through. I will definitely switch up the water for the shakes as I seem to be able to drink about 600mls of water a day now. Getting better each day! Yay!

Yeah I think I am on a form of PPI (I haven't heard that term in Australia but I am on medication for acid reflux so I imagine it's the same thing) but others are suggesting I might have to up the intake so I'll talk to my doctor about it. Otherwise though, u are right. The moment I am distracted with something else, I don't feel hungry. Thank u for your help!

I feel like I am on a PPI (I don't think they use that abbreviation in Aus sorry!), I am on medication for acid reflux. I think I'll talk to my doc to see if I'm taking a high enough dosage. Thanks for your advice!

Just curious, what was the pain relating to? Acid reflux? I have had hardly any pain to the point where I don't even take paracetamol and that has been since I have gotten out of the hospital. The only discomfort has really been the hunger pains. I hope that's normal and a good thing!

There are different types of acid medications. Proton pump inhibitors block the stomach from producing acid (omeprazole, pantaprozole, protonix) Some other types reduce acid once it hits the stomach (tums, mylanta, rolaids). You need the first type.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
