I have struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. In the past 6 years, I have gone through major stress from 4 deaths in the family. Food has been my numbing "medication." I now weigh 225 lbs which is my highest weight. It has taken me a year to reach this decision and now I am approved for my sleeve! Only my partner knows about the surgery. I know, understand and respect the choice to share or not to share one's weight loss surgery story. I work with a few women who could easily be inducted to the Hall of Gossip and BItchiness should one ever exist. We worked with a manager who shared that she had gastric bypass a few years prior to working at this company. Gossip got into overdrive with vicious comments such as, " I wouldn't mutilate myself for a bit of vanity" or "why risk my life when I could just put my fork down." Mind you 2 of these women are not small chicks themselves and can benefit from "putting the fork down" if it was that easy.

Also, I am a health professional and believe that sharing your diagnosis and/or treatment is a personal choice. Whether you have a serious disease like cancer or a minor illness such as a yeast infection, it is up to an individual decision to share or not.

I am looking forward to my surgery. When the weight starts dropping, I will tell them "I am putting my fork down." Thankful for this forum. Your stories inspire and give me hope.

I work with the same couple of women. There are only 3 people that know I had it done and respect my choice not to share my life with everyone. I only took 1 week off, as I only had a weeks vacation, and they just see that I'm losing weight. I just say exercise and no carbs( not a compete lie). I am happy with my decision not to share with everyone as It's not always the topic of conversation with everyone.

Sharing is totally optional at work. I started off telling 3 friends and one of them I regret telling. She seems to think that this is some weird experiment and tells everyone that I've done this. So now lots of people know that I wouldn't have told. Awkward. But now I'm 6 months post and she's seen me lose 63 lbs while she's gained again. Good luck to you!

Good for you! I totally agree! It is a personal and private decidion. I do not know what response I plan to use, (my surgery is in,July, still waiting on the date). But it is,aweful the things that are said as we try to regain our health. Part of me wants to say, yeah I got wls, what's it to you? Lol. One thing I know for sure I will be saying. "I am happy being fat works for you,because it didn't for me. I became disabled, sick, immobile, and pretty much unable to enjoy my life. I never want being fat to do that to you. But if it does, you can take comfort in knowing there is help."
I have heard some of the most cruel things said, hence the reason my surgery is a secret for now.[emoji4]
