I Am About To Make A Year And I Feel Like A Failure

Recommended Posts

With all weight loss, the body holds on to the fluids you received intraop. As you lose the fat your cells fill with the fluids. Then suddenly your body will equilabrate and release the fluids and you will see weight loss. So persevere, you are going to be so happy soon. [emoji5]

If you are 100 pounds overweight, you are not really expected to lose 100lbs after surgery. Average loss is 65-75%. You've lost on the lower side of average.

If you want to continue losing weight, you'll have to track and count everything and see if there is something you can change.

Johnny if you are referring to my response to the person who is 10 days post op and discouraged by not losing a large amount weight yet I would like to inform you that I am a Registered Nurse of 40 years. This is a fact that I have known for a very long time due to my research but last week we had physician attend our support group and someone asked a similar question as the person that I responded to. The physician said this exact thing. Before you leave irate insults you should have common sense to research first and make sure that you aren't the stupid one.

Furthermore, the person revealed that she was eating 400 calories per day and also exercising. The really low caloric intake and extreme exercise caused her Cortisol levels to increase. Cortisol is a hormone which causes Fluid retention. She can shed Water weight by eating a few more calories and exercise less. She also should monitor her salt intake because that also causes fluid retention. In the first two weeks most programs have us eating broths and creamy , of which both are high in salt.

I did start at a very low BMI, I had the surgery to deal with Barrett , so not for weight loss per say, but now I am sitting here think, what the heck is going on, I should not be in a stall so early?

Jane, I hope that my explanation and suggestion of how to shed the Water will be of some help to you. You can ask your doctor if what I'm saying is true or you can research it on your own. Scientists have done many experiments and documentation on this phenomenon. So there is a lot of information to be had on this topic.

I have some medical experience myself, and yes what you are saying is, in fact, correct. People, when we use this site, we are not asking medical professionals for advise. We are seeking encouragement and support. Nasty comments are better left for Twitter.

Hey how are you doing ? My hw was 250. 244 when I saw my surgeon and now 4 months that later 190lbs. You have lost alot. But if I'm honest I won't be happy either. But the reality is that is alot of weight loss. So be proud. You say you eat decent. But what is daily eating like. Maybe someone may have suggestions of what you can remove or include to move things along. :)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
