I Am About To Make A Year And I Feel Like A Failure

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I had my surgery on June 22, 2016 and I used to be 250 pounds. I am now 185 pounds, meaning that I only lost 65 pounds. My goal weight is 150 but I feel like I should have reached that a while ago. Should I go in for additional surgery? Should I diet and exercise even harder? If anyone has any advice or can relate, please let me know.

Not sure what is wrong . Do you go by the diet guidelines we are suppose to use for our lifetime? I am 9 month out now I started at 250 also im 5'9 and below my original goal of 165 now I'm 145. I t was effortless really . Since only a few ounces ever fit in my stomach. Maybe go to a group for the eating part to get on track. Kiaser has one . Never give up failures not an option. Hehe that's what I tell myself anyways.

Ouch Shareeann! Angeliquita, what does your diet look like right now?

First of all, congrats on losing 65lbs, that is not easy to lose. Second, how does your protien/water intake look? What kind of workouts are you doing- maybe switching it up to shock the system may help jump start some losing again.
Don't be so hard on yourself, even if you have gotten off track...everyone does no matter what they say. We had this surgery for a reason-if weight loss was so effortless like some people insinuate, then why get wls to begin with? 🙄.

like others have asked, have you been sticking to your plan? Even at two years out, I still have to weigh/measure and log everything I eat. Portion creep is real...and bad habits start sneaking in all too easily. Both can sabotage your efforts. The good news is, if you go back to basics, you can still lose the weight.

Thank you guys! My diet is decent and I exercise often, but perhaps its a mental thing too because I really do not like where I'm at so its affecting how I feel about my progress.

Ouch? I didn't mean to sound mean or anything. Its just when we get this surgery and I did 6 months of nutrition/counseling classes before hand it kind of gave me all the tools. You can choose to use them or not. I'm just frank about it I guess. Angekiquita it could be more of a mental thing. My Counselor used to tell people they needed to use the chair more then the surgery. I ended up do both. Trust me it was effortless losing it all but now it isn't, its a mental thing for me tho. Good luck girl you can do it!

Weight loss after my surgery was effortless for me . Not before! and not now that its gone. Maintenance is the hard part .'

I am 2 years out (well 18 days shy of) and find myself eating things I should not be eating -and eating too much! I really need to get back to the basics. I am hoping that with summer bad habits slowly ticking away with cool weather coming I can get back on track. 12 hour work days really diminish the idea of working out (in my mind) - - I should go out TODAY and get me a food journal - (I keep track better if I write it out that on a phone app) - -Congrats to all of you on your weight loss - I was down 80lbs - but have gained 10 back this summer being BAD!!!

Additional surgery shouldn't even be in the conversation unless there's ongoing complications that need to be addressed, especially for 35 pounds. I think habits need to be looked at, and understanding your situation and what's happening wrong.

Hi Shareeann - quick question. When u say it was effortless, what did u do to lose the weight so quickly? How often did u exercise? What type of exercise did u do regularly? Im good with the food part since its pretty much the same no matter ur surgeon, i was just curious about the exercise regimen u have. Also, what are the max calories u try to stay under? Thanks!

I am three weeks out from my surgery and I have only lost 10 lbs! I mean I have been taking in 400 calories a day and I can’t believe it. I have been at the same weight for four days now

@janedb, did you start at a lower bmi? Have you had your post op follow up? Do you have pcos? Maybe you're in the stall. My weight hasn't changed in a week so far. Our body should adjust soon.

first, do a search on the the "three-week stall". Almost everyone has their first stall within the first month of surgery. Mine lasted through week 2 and week 3. During week 4, the scale finally started moving again - and I dropped 6-8 lbs within a couple of days. Just stick to your program and the weight loss will start again.

secondly, I only lost 16 lbs the entire first month post-surgery. I know you read about people losing 30 lbs the first month, but they're the extreme. I've been on these boards a long time, and I'd say 15-25 lbs the first month is average. You've already lost 10, so you'll get there by the end of the first month.

I did start at a very low BMI, I had the surgery to deal with Barrett , so not for weight loss per say, but now I am sitting here think, what the heck is going on, I should not be in a stall so early?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
