not losing weight day 18 post op

Recommended Posts

that is great advice. I did find that i do have to up the intensity of my excersice. With this surgery it does make it so hard because usually after my walk I am so exhausted I have to take a nap. I tried to do a workout on Beach body on demand called You v2. Its actually a really good and easy steps to follow. I loved it . Its a 30 min. video . But i was not able to keep up with the full thing and I ended up stopping before it was over. and the next day I was so tired I just slept way to much and didnt even go for a walk. This was surprising for me, Today im going to try it again and try to get a couple more calories in since i think that might be part of the problem. Also a side note about food. I am on pureed foods. and my doctor said i could eat regular meat as long as i chewed it up to a mechanical soft before i swallowed. So i tried to eat some chicken and even copped it up to mechanical soft before I chewed it . This was the first time i vomited since the surgery. I tried it again the next day with a chicken leg and ate it right off the bone with no problem. lol maybe its my cooking since my husband was the one that grilled.

Was the first chicken breast meat? There is a huge difference between the white meat and dark meat in digestibility.

Oh, yes, sorry. There is more fat in dark meat so it's softer and easier on the tummy. I'm 10 weeks out, and really can't do white meat yet. Dark meat with a sauce is where its at... (I mixed a thigh with a tablespoon of baked Beans yesterday.. yum!).

18 days out on 600-800 cals a day and people are saying you should ramp up your exercise? hell no. Terrible advice.

Upping your exercise means you must up your caloric intake. It's really not necessary. If you keep at 600-800 calories (already borderline starvation mode) while exercising like some of these people here suggest you do, your body will be starving, your metabolism will slow down.. you'll stop losing healthy weight because you're already putting a stressed out body into starvation mode.

I have no idea what those posters are thinking, but it's awful advice.

You don't need to rigorously exercise this early on.. walking is perfectly fine, and it helps to get rid of gas. If you want to work out or do rigorous exercise I'd suggest doing so under the approval and supervision from a doctor or nutritionist/dietitian. The key early on is to do things in a healthy fashion.

It's easy to forget this one is only a couple weeks out. Purees need to be soupy still. tuna and other fish are easier to digest than beef or poultry. Beans and lentils are even better.

Exercise needs to be limited to walking for several more weeks. I wasn't cleared for vigorous exercise until 6 weeks out.

yes, agreed i will need to increase my calorie intake. Thats probably why i was so exhausted and needed a full day of rest, after just a 30 minute workout. I also appreciate all advice that i have received and am learning a lot from those that are more experienced with this than I. Thank you all again

I can understand your frustration. The first week after surgery I lost 6kg (13.2lbs) and have been the same weight for the past week. Exercise has been gentle walking but increasing distance as I don't want to create a hernia or put stress on my body while I'm still recovering from surgery. I'm trying to increase my fluids and have found tea easier than Water to drink. I'm looking at other 'wins ' for example fitting into clothes I haven't worn for awhile and making sure what I do eat is nutritious. The lack of weight loss has been frustrating but I'm still learning what my new body needs to function well so I'm taking this time to learn and reeducate myself

yes it is frustrating especially with such a low calorie intake not to be losing something, anything... but i wasn't aware like someone had mentioned above that my metabolic rate has also slowed down to adjust for the almost starvation mode my body is in, even though i dont feel at all like i am in starvation mode. I have had a couple of huge wins already, i must be losing inches because my shorts from last year that were tight are just hanging one me! and when i took a bath the Water actually flowed over my stomach! exciting stuff.

Love those other indicators that things are changing!

my main concern now is eating healthy when i can eat again minus sweeteners and carbs. How long after surgery can you exercise?

At this point, you're just walking. My surgeon recommends walking for 4 weeks, add bike and elliptical until 6 weeks, then released to do what I wanted after 6 weeks.

Your own team will give you guidelines based on your own medical history. I know 6 weeks seems like a long time, but it will fly by, and you'll be happy to not injure yourself :)

FYI - at 3 weeks post-op, you're not in starvation mode or close to it. That won't happen until you're less than 10% body fat (but more like 5%) and your body is burning fat to make up for the lack of calories you eat.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
