Silly Question !! Maybe not

Recommended Posts

Gum chewing is not usually recommended post WLS. Even though you are not eating anything, the mouth starts producing digestive juices and the stomach prepares for the arrival of food by increasing acid. Heartburn is the normal result, but in extreme cases ulcers can occur. Of course, I am not talking about a one time deal, rather a repeated habit of gum chewing.

My doctor says not right away. 6-8 weeks post op then you can start having gum. Right now it is letting your stomach heal and following the stages.

Even though we are adults, we have to think of our stomachs as newborn babies:

1) Each week is like 2 months in baby time: Would you give a newborn gum? No. because they can't chew it and they run the risk of swallowing it.

2) Would you give a toddler gum? Most likely no because they run the risk of swallowing it.

You have to treat your new stomach as a newborn. It sucks because we have things that we like mentally from before but our stomachs cannot handle it at this time.

You will be able to chew gum eventually. Now is just not the time. Once you have made you way to solids then you should be able to have gum but your surgeon will make the decision.

Congratulations on the surgery.

Another warning my NUT gave me was the concern of accidentally swallowing it. Since you can be so swollen after surgery the fear is it could just sit on top of the opening and cause a lot of discomfort. Better to try sucking on something like ice chips or a popsicle.

I am never allowed to chew gum again:-(. During the liquid phase I chewed sugar free popsicles. It was somewhat satisfying.

Weird as it may sound I got all chewable vitamins and savored the ones that tasted good. Like I was chewing on candy. Lol. Now that I can chew and swallow tablets I've given up my hankering for chewable Vitamins.< br>

I think you shouldn't, as chewing gum may get you air into stomach

I was told that if you accidentally swallow the gum at this stage it will have to be surgically removed because it won't pass through your stomach. Very dangerous! !!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
